CC Attribution 3.0 License. 10 th of July, 1894 Istanbul˙ Earthquake (Marmara Sea, Turkey) Cenk Yaltırak and Murat ¸Sahin Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Mines, Geological Engineering, Istanbul,˙ Turkey ([email protected]) The sea of Marmara is a region with the longest historical earthquake record of our planet. The earthquake of 10 July 1894 in Istanbul is the last earthquake of the historical period before the beginning of the instrumental period in the region. The magnitude and location of this earthquake and also its relationship with the North Anatolian Fault should be discussed in literature. Previous studies have not fully analyzed the historical data of 1894 earthquakes. For this reason, conflicting views are put forward regarding an earthquake in Marmara in the future. According to the historical records, the major damage was in the Istanbul Peninsula, Avcılar, Adalar, Karamürsel and Yalova. Due to its formation properties, it was effective in remote areas (Izmit,˙ Gölcük, Adapazarı). It is clear that the most damage was in Old Istanbul and Prince Island. The tension cracks in different directions were observed in Heybeliada, Büyükada and Burgazada. There are observations to be interpreted as a tsunami wave about one and a half meter-height between Avcılar and Kartal. The submarine telegraph line extending from Kartal to Marmara Sea was broken at three points in the east of Büyükada. According to the damage assessment after the earthquake and other observations, it is understood that this earthquake was along the Adalar Fault. When considering seis- mic and multibeam data, it is apparent that the Adalar Fault was composed of echolon segments. The submarine landslides were mapped in front of the fault scarp. The Adalar Fault is a 45 km-long, 80o SW-dipping right-lateral normal oblique fault. The tsunami scenarios that we modelld along this fault are compatible with historical obser- vations along the coast of Istanbul.˙ Our GIS-based intensity scenario shows that the magnitude of the 1894 Istanbul Earthquake is Mw 7..

They differ from quartz sandstones by their vesicular texture and are devoid of any stratigraphic layering. Their mineral constituents are plagioclase (30%–35%), feldspar (35%–40%), and quartz (20%–25%), corresponding to rhyolite. The crystallization age of the rhyolites is 45.66 ± 0.84 Ma on the basis of the U-Pb zircon data. They show high-K calc-alkaline affinity. On primitive-normalized spider diagrams, negative anomalies of Ba, Nb, Sr, P, and Ti and positive anomalies of Pb are noteworthy. Their chondrite-normalized REE patterns are characterized by strongly fractionated patterns with demonstrative negative Eu anomaly, whereby middle REE are not fractionated relative to the heavy REE. These geochemical features suggest a fractionating mineral assemblage of feldspar, apatite, and biotite without significant involvement of garnet. The Lutetian rhyolites of the Princes’ Islands are a part of the Middle Eocene magmatic associations of the West Pontides, related to collision of the Menderes-Taurus block with the Pontides.

One of them is caused by far-source earthquakes and the other one is caused by near-field type earthquakes. [1]. Long-period seismic waves can be most destructive waves since they amplify their effect when they are passing through the sedimentary areas. There are many examples in literature that shows the devastating effects of long-period seismic waves. The most shocking example is Mexico City, which is located 400 km away from the 1985 Michoacan Earthquake (Mw=8.0) [2]. The aim of this study is to detect the long period seismic waves which will affect Marmara Region and generate relationship according to the path and source. On May 24, 2014 Mw=6.9 Gökçeada earthquake has occurred and after this event, there was far source long period ground waves observed in Marmara Region. We used 5 stations to compare the wave characteristics. Gökçeada station which is located 40 km away from the epicenter is the closest station to the North Aegean Earthquake, and the other 4 stations which are located near İstanbul are 300 km away from the epicenter.

The relations of Christian and Muslim communities of each south-eastern European country are unique because of the diverse political, cultural, and socio-economic background of each nation, which however influences one another despite an often shared Ottoman background. The present study investigates the relations between Muslim and Christian communities in the contemporary context of modern Greece and Turkey, which have received many political, governmental, cultural, geographical, and religious influences leading them to the present relational shape. The thesis proposes that a distinct ecclesial development has taken place in the contemporary status of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Autocephalous Greek Orthodox Church in response to Muslim- Christian relations in modern Turkey and Greece, especially after the establishment of the Kingdom of Greece in 1832 and the Republic of Turkey in 1923. In addition, the thesis investigates the modern historical context of the States of Greece and Turkey especially as it relates to the minority question under the light of reciprocity and the International Treaties, Conventions, and the Declaration of Human Rights. Greece, where the prevailing religion is Eastern Orthodoxy, accommodates within its borders an official recognised Muslim minority based in Western Thrace as well as other Muslim populations located at major Greek urban centres and the Islands of the Aegean Sea.

In the present paper, a sampling of benthic macrophytes was made from 0-5 m depth at 25 different sites of the Sea of Marmara (Turkey) in 2015 and the Marine Floristic Ecological Index (MARFEI) was applied. Macrophytes were classified into five ecological status groups: ESGI (IA, IB, IC; late-successional taxa such as Cystoseira spp., angiosperms, calcareous algae) and ESGII (IIA, IIB; opportunistic taxa such as filamentous and sheet-like green algae). The study revealed good ecological status class (ESC) for 1 site, moderate for 11 sites, poor for 10 sites, and bad for 3 sites. MARFEIEQR showed a strong negative linear relationship with the pressure index MA- LUSI. Nevertheless, the results of this study have to be validated by similar studies in other georgaphical areas.
