Legal Name Artistic Involvement Organization Name Please include a short bio: Adelaide J Barroga Practicing Artist self JEANNIE BARROGA, a Dramatists Guild Lifetime Member, has been active 35 of her 40 theater years in the Bay Area. After founding the Palo Alto Playwright Forum, she was TheatreWorks literary manager through 2003 (plus OET?s). She has had productions at Pan Asian Repertory, New York, and in Seattle, Honolulu, San Jose, Berkeley, Palo Alto, etc. WALLS, published, anthologized, and in theses, received the Gerbode / Hewlett Foundation grant. TALK-STORY at TheatreWorks was workshopped at the Mark Taper Forum. She received the NEA Access for Artistic Excellence Award, a Bay Area Playwrights Contest award, L.A. Maverick Award, the Tino and Joey Awards, and a CalArts Herb Alpert Award nomination. She co-produced short films and webisodes on YouTube. Selected 2000 productions include BANYAN, GADGETS, BUFFALO?ED and a MATTIE MAE?S workshop on the Richmond shipyards. Barroga served on panels for Theatre Communications Group, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Arts Council, the San Francisco Arts Commission, and at the Santa Clara, Oakland, and Marin Arts Councils. Currently she has two book drafts: a collection of Bay Area Filipino American Theater Artists and in fiction, TURN RIGHT AT THE WATER BUFFALO. Her collection is at Stanford Green Library Special Collections. 'Outlaw' Bicycling
‘Outlaw’ Bicycling CHRIS CARLSSON [In] this bike subculture there’s no person who is the best, who is winning, or getting the most money. It’s a pretty equal community in that everyone can excel, but not have to be the top dog... (Robin Haevens) 1 A funny thing happened during the last decade of the 20 th century. Paralleling events that transpired a century earlier, a social movement emerged based on the bicycle. This so-called movement is far from a unified force, and unlike the late 19 th century bicyclists, this one does not have a ready demand for “good roads” to rally around. Instead, “chopper” bike clubs, nonprofit do-it-yourself repair shops, monthly Critical Mass rides, organized recreational and quasi- political rides and events, and an explosion of small zines covering every imaginable angle of bicycling and its surrounding culture, have proliferated in most metropolitan areas. Month-long “Bikesummer” festivals have occurred in cities around North America since 1999, galvanizing bicyclists across the spectrum into action and cooperation. This curious, multifaceted phenomenon constitutes an important arena of autonomous politics. The bicycle has become a cultural signifier that begins to unite people across economic and racial strata. It signals a sensibility that stands against oil wars and the environmental devastation wrought by the oil and chemical industries, the urban decay imposed by cars and highways, the endless monocultural sprawl spreading outward into exurban zones. This new bicycling subculture stands for localism, a more human pace, more face-to-face interaction, hands-on technological self-sufficiency, reuse and recycling, and a healthy urban environment that is friendly to self-propulsion, pleasant smells and sights, and human conviviality. -

We are pranksters, poets, freaks and fools, dogged seekers of the strange and connoisseurs of the bizarre. We are wise children and wise asses, dreamers, displaced extraterrestrials, unemployed artists, urban necromancers, underground performers and inspired game players. We are the termites in society's crutches and the bad egg at the corporate picnic. We are a roving pack of naughty Santas, a virtual circus filled with mischievous clowns. We are a semipermeable collective of free radicals, nattering nihirealists. diehard disinhibitors and dangling participants. We are organized anarchist infiltrators of the status quo, exposing minds to alternative realities. We are the punctuation at the end of hypothetical sentences, words in prose of technological satire, and grammarians of absurdist syntax. We are that fringe element which is always near the edge of reason. We are the bon vivants of industrial despair, mixing Hammet and Pynchon with Wilde abandon. We are creative social terrorists and late- night reality hackers, carving out temporary autonomous zones within the real estate of modem culture. Our numbers are most prominent in the flat edge of the Bell curve. We are the rapidly evolving mutants of the next millennium. -

As part of this exhibit, visitors will encounter rare documentation of events, pranks and actions by seminal art and culture movements of the past; neon sculptures; photography; and multi-media installations. “John’s work offers tales from the underground that challenge our contemporary moment, characterized by a zombie like addiction to social media, weakened ability and will to gather, explore and wonder informally,” says curator of the retrospective Natalia Ivanova Mount. We need the rituals of the underground today more than ever so we can imagine the world beyond capitalism, beyond commodification, and the menial production of objects and ideas in an art world, beholden to a market value. -
