At the time of the U.A.E.’s founding in 1971, the country had just seven hospitals and 12 health centers. As of 2015, according to the latest figures from the U.A.E. statistics authority, the U.A.E. had 126 public and private hospitals with a combined capacity of over 12,000 beds.1 U.S. companies and citizens have played an important role in this growth story, as best symbolized by the Oasis Hospital in Al Ain. In 1960, U.S. missionaries Drs. Pat and Marian Kennedy built this hospital – the U.A.E.’s first – in a mud-block guesthouse donated by the late U.A.E. President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.2 Over the next 50 years, this hospital birthed more than 90,000 babies, including members of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family.3 Moreover, it retained strong connections with that family, which funded the hospital’s expansion earlier this decade.4 As the U.A.E. -

The Community Index was produced by DataHaven in partnership with Fairfield County’s Community Foundation and many other regional partners, including the Health Improvement Alliance (HIA), a coalition serving towns in the Greater Bridgeport region. This document is a summary of pertinent information. The Joint Commission The Joint Commission operates an accreditation program for hospitals and other types of health care providers. The Joint Commission’s primary purposes are to improve the quality and safety of patient care and to accredit facilities as having met a comprehensive set of standards required for reimbursement under the federally-mandated entitlement programs including Medicare and Medicaid. OSHA The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has developed standards that mandate certain actions designed to protect health care workers against infectious hazards from blood and body fluids, including blood borne pathogens such as Hepatitis B and HIV. These standards can be found in the yellow Infection Control Manuals on all patient care units here at Stamford Hospital, and in an online version of this manual in the Infectious Disease folder. I. CARE OF PATIENTS AND PATIENT RIGHTS RESTRAINTS There is a defined protocol for management of patients who require restraints. Restraints are avoided if at all possible as they render the patient helpless and dependent. Restraints should be removed as soon as a less restrictive method of assuring the patient's and safety of others becomes feasible.
