The crucial tests facing Europe’s commitment to open society will be how it treats minorities such as Muslims and ensures equal rights for all in a climate of rapidly expanding diversity. The Open Society Institute’s At Home in Europe project is working to address these issues through monitoring and advocacy activities that examine the position of Muslims and other minorities in Europe. One of the project’s key efforts is this series of reports on Muslim communities in the 11 EU cities of Amsterdam, Antwerp, Berlin, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Leicester, London, Marseille, Paris, Rotterdam, and Stockholm. The reports aim to increase understanding of the needs and aspirations of diverse Muslim communities by examining how public policies in selected cities have helped or hindered the political, social, and economic participation of Muslims. By fostering new dialogue and policy initiatives between Muslim communities, local officials, and international policymakers, the At Home in Europe project seeks to improve the participation and inclusion of Muslims in the wider society while enabling them to preserve the cultural, linguistic, and religious practices that are important to their identities. Peacock and Dr. Lauren G. Leve) Based on thirteen months of intensive fieldwork at two primary sites in India, this dissertation describes how adherents of shrine-based Sufism assert their identity as Indian Muslims in the contexts of public debates over religion and belonging in India, and of reformist critiques of their Islamic beliefs and practices. Faced with opposition to their mode of Islam from reformist Muslim groups, and the challenges to their sense of national identity as members of a religious minority in India, I argue that adherents of shrine-based Sufism claim the sacred space of the Sufi shrine as a venue where both the core values of Islam and of India are given form and reproduced. For these adherents, contemporary shrine-based Sufism is a dynamic and creative force that manifests essential aspects of Islam that are also fundamental Indian values, and which are critical to the health of the nation today. The dissertation reveals that contested identities and internal religious debates can only be understood and interpreted within the broader framework of national and global debates over Islam and over the place of Islam in the Indian polity that shape them. -

State govern- ments, international organizations, nongovernmental organizations, and international tribunals promote religious liberalization as the antidote to the violence and discord that is often attributed to these divisions. Enshrined in international agreements and promoted by a small army of experts and authorities, legal protections for religious minorities are heralded as the solution to the chal- lenges of living with social and religious diversity. -

INTRODUCTION Aleviness2 has become a Western European phenomenon. Today, Alevi organisations exist in Austria, Belgium,3 Denmark, France, Great-Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland - not to mention Australia, Canada and the United States. Although most Alevis settled in Western European countries in the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, Aleviness has only recently appeared in the public spheres of settlement countries, indicating that this trend is due not so much to the migration process itself, as to the growing public awareness of questions regarding Islam. Another important factor has been a general Alevi resurgence, observed both in Turkey and in the settlement countries since the late 1980s.4 This development leads me to distinguish between the terms Aleviness, to refer to the social fact, and Alevism, to refer to activism in the name of Aleviness, ‘Alevi’ and ‘Alevist’ being used to refer to the adherents of ‘Aleviness’ and ‘Alevism’ respectively. -

The main problem that required addressing, was that many people are unfamiliar with Islam and its holiest books the Quran and Sahih hadith. Verses in the Quran are not organized by the progression of time. Roughly they are ordered in terms of length. The actual time order in which they were revealed to Mohammad is known in part from its content and in part from other holy texts like the hadith and the sira (biographical information about the life of Mohammad). Later verses in the Quran abrogate earlier verses. Ahmadis reject this, since some of the latest are the most violent. Caution to readers: Most Muslims in the US are not fundamentalists. That is, they don’t closely follow the holy books, for example, with regard to strict separation of the sexes, and a lowered status for women. -

PRACTICE AND CONVERSION OF ASANTE MARKET WOMEN TO THE AHMADIYYA MUSLIM MISSION IN THE LATE 20TH CENTURY By Mikelle Antoine A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY History 2010 ABSTRACT PRACTICE AND CONVERSION OF ASANTE MARKET WOMEN TO THE AHMADIYYA MUSLIM MISSION IN THE LATE 20TH CENTURY BY Mikelle Antoine Asante Islamic history does not end in the 19th century. Asante women in particular, have been converting to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission since the late 20th century. This period also correlates to a time when women were victimized in Ghana as prostitutes, witches and non patriotic. The ill treatment of women also intersected with the failing socio-economy. Food production was at its lowest and unemployment at its highest. Many people formed associations and consequently came to depend less on the state and more on social and religious networks. Converting to Islam was not without its problems. Asantes lived among Muslims for centuries, even before the rise of the kingdom. While the monarchy welcomed the written and linguistic knowledge of Muslims, they curtailed the spread of Islam. This worked to maintain Islam as distinct from Asante cultural traditions. Consequently, Islam was remained the religion of the foreigner or non-Asante. This configuration has not changed. Asante women who converted to Islam during this period were ostracized by their families. Some were denied inheritance, property, titles and stools. Many left the family home and never returned. British colonial rule gravely affected the relationship between Muslims and the Asante. -

This study uses an inductive approach to analyze interview data for the purpose of answering the central question: What are the shifts international Muslim students are experiencing in regards to their Muslim and/or cultural identity? And, the following sub-questions are addressed: What is contributing to international Muslim students’ shifts in Muslim and/or cultural identity? What are the implications of these shifts? Using a grounded theory approach, these questions are answered using inductively arrived at axial categories, which include independence, exposure, and questioning, and a central category of discernment. The categories resulted from the participants’ data, and help understand what shifts international Muslim students are experiencing. Additionally, these categories help to understand what is contributing to these shifts, and what the implications of these shifts are. Open-ended, semi-structured interviews were conducted with international Muslim and former Muslim students who were studying, or had studied at one of the two chosen universities. These participants were selected as a result of their status as international students, in addition to their Muslim or former Muslim identities.
