Calvary Sacred Circle is offering a unique way to help you/your family slow down and turn your hearts and minds to God. Please visit us in Brackenridge Hall on Sunday, November 24th and pick up an Advent Calendar and colored pencils - a fun activity to use at home alone or together for meditative coloring each day. The coloring calendar is full of thoughtful and creative quotes, scripture readings, and activities to help you connect and contemplate the true gifts of the season. Adult Faith Formation: Calvary Conversation "Holiday Memories" Sunday, November 24th at 10:10 am in Crawford Hall Facilitator- Rev Ben Scott It’s time to get ready for Christmas! Tucked away in our memories are the stories of Christmas holidays in the past that we can share in the rich diversity of our parish community. We may bring stories of ethnic food, fun, and frolic. On the dark side, there may also be stories of the stress and anxiety, poverty and shame, loss and abuse which ravaged the merrymaking of the holiday. I’ll begin with my memories of the Midnight Mass at Calvary on Christmas Eve in the early 1940’s as World War II shattered the peace on earth and the glory of God in the highest heaven. Come and listen, and bring stories of your own to tell. Ben Scott ADVENT WREATH WORKSHOP Brackenridge Hall Sunday, November 24 10 am - 12 noon An Advent Wreath Workshop will be held on Sunday, November 24 beginning immediately following the 9:00am service and continuing throughout the morning. Supplies are provided for a fee of $5.00, or a free-will offering. Please bring your own decorations and greenery if you wish to add to the greenery and candles that will be provided. Advent begins on Sunday, December 1st - so come get your wreath ready! Upcoming Events.... ADVENT PROCESSION – December 1 at 4 pm Calvary's annual Advent Procession will take place on Sunday, December 1 at 4 pm. All of the parish choirs will participate. The Advent Procession, centered around the seven Great "O" Antiphons, is a poignant way to begin the Advent season of anticipation and expectation. The service will be immediately followed by the lighting of the giant pine tree in the Oasis Courtyard. Following the Lighting of the Courtyard Tree there will be a reception with cookies and cider in Brackenridge Hall. We hope you will make this a part of your Advent tradition this year! Sacred Circle Yoga and Meditation Series - Fall Session II Our gentle yoga and guided meditation series with Patricia Barrier will continue twice a month on the following dates: November 12th and 19th, & December 3rd and 10th. Cost is $75 for the six week session or $15 to drop in on an individual class date. Please register by calling the church office at 282-9429 or e-mail [email protected]. Save the date.... ADVENT QUIET DAY AND TAIZÉ WORSHIP SERVICE “BE Still and Know that I am God.” - psalm 46:10 SACRED CIRCLE invites you to join us on Saturday, December 7th from 1:00-4:00 pm at Calvary. We offer this time of peace, contemplation and prayer in preparation for the excitement that comes with the celebration of Jesus’ birth. The following candle-lit activities will be available ongoing all afternoon: • Reverend Beth will be in the church for private counsel, confession and companionship or feel free to be in the sanctuary on your own. • The Labyrinth will be open in Crawford Hall to use as a walking meditation to integrate the body with the mind and the spirit. Elise Lewis, our labyrinth facilitator, will instruct or assist you in your walk as needed. In addition, we provide smaller wooden and finger labyrinths to be used while seated making this accessible to all abilities. Activities and materials for personal reflection and journaling are also provided. • A quiet contemplative art activity will be offered in Menefee conference room. Barb Schwenk has designed and drawn special mandalas for Advent which can be shaded with artist’s colored pencils. All materials and instruction will be provided and you will take home a beautiful piece of personal art. At 4:00 pm, we will close the day together with a special Taizé worship service prepared by Brian Williams, choir members and our Sacred Circle team. The service will be held in Brackenridge Hall and includes the repetitive chanting and singing of harmonized tunes to instrumental accompaniment. Taizé music highlights simple phrases, usually lines from the Psalms or other pieces of scripture, repeated or sung in canon. The repetition is designed to serve as a form of meditation and prayer. This style of Christian worship practiced by the ecumenical Taizé community in France, is interspersed with readings, prayers, and periods of silence in a darkened, candle-lit space. Come for any or all of the activities and stay as long as you like! Quiet Day is a moving and meaningful way to start the Holy season. We hope that you will BE with us. The Greening of the Church! Looking for some fun holiday fellowship with your Calvary family? On Sunday December 8th join us for the Greening of the Church after the 11AM service. We’ll decorate the church with Christmas greens, some will climb a ladder or two and the children will be trimming the Brackenridge tree. Please contact Tim Seelinger at [email protected] if you are able to assist. A soup/chili luncheon will be available along with the sounds of Christmas carols performed by our very own Brian Williams. Please sign up in Brackenridge if you’ll be attending the luncheon and bring a dessert to share if you desire. All are welcome! • Connect at Calvary December 2018
Connect at Calvary December 2018 “Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see – I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people; to you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’” Luke 2:8-12 What is the best gift that you have ever received at Christmastime? What is the best gift that you’ve given someone? I remember the year that we gave my Dad a bicycle. We had it hidden somewhere else and only a small box that was wrapped underneath the tree. He’s always able to pick up a wrapped gift and figure out what it is, so we didn’t want him to know – we wanted him to be surprised. He was very surprised when his gift was not what he though it was. We had wrapped a pair of socks in the small box. Of course, he figured it out and said thank you. But then, there was the look on his face when we brought the bicycle into the room! I’ll never forget it. My prayer for you is that you will enjoy your time of gift giving and receiving this Christmas season as you celebrate the greatest gift of all – the gift of Jesus.

  • Angel Lesson
Hello! I hope you got to listen to Ms. Sheila Phillips’ won- derful story about a boy who went hunting for an angel. Do you think he found one? What is an angel? The Bible mentions angels a lot - almost 300 times. An- gels do a lot of work for God. Using the links provided we can make a booklet with 6 facts about angels. I included scriptures about each fact because to know the truth about something it is always a good idea to check your Bible and see what it says. To the right you see a pair of wings with two facts. The first one is that God made angels to protect and guard us from harm. We find scripture about their jobs in Psalm 91:11, Psalm 34:7, and Matthew 18:10. And besides being busy protecting us, angels are God’s messengers. If you have been in the Christmas pageant we do each December, you might remember the angel Gabriel telling Mary that she was going to have baby Je- sus! Luke 1:31. Angels have very important messages all through the Bible. The word “angel” is from a Greek word meaning “messenger”. To your left you see two more facts. Angels can look like ordinary people. Hebrews 13:2 tells us not to forget to be nice to people because you never know the person might be an angel. An example from the Bible is when Abraham offered food and drink to strangers. It turns out they were angels sent to tell him that even though he and Sarah( his wife) were very old they would have a baby this very year.
