  • Ennis Cathedral
Ennis Cathedral: The Building & Its People. Saturday 29th. August 2009 Presented by the Clare Roots Society Clare Roots Society The Clare Roots Society, brainchild of Ennisman Larry Brennan, was formed in April 2006 as an amateur family history group. The Society meets once a month in Ennis, and has approx. 50 members. Anyone with an interest in tracing their family tree is welcome to join. Some members are experienced genealogists while others are novices in the field. In addition to local members, we have some 'virtual' members who live overseas, but who follow our activities via email, and dream that they are in Clare. Activities are advertised in local press and in the Ennis Cathedral church bulletin. Under the Chairmanship of Declan Barron and his committee of Fiona de Buitleir, Eric Shaw, Larry Brennan & Paddy Waldron, guest speakers were arranged at past meetings including Paul O’Donnell of the South Galway genealogy group, Peter Beirne of 'The Manse' Local Studies library in Ennis, Jim Herlihy on the RIC, Liam Curran on Irish Soldiers in the British Army, Jonny Dillon of the Folklore Dept., UCD, and Dr. Pat Nugent of the University of Liverpool amongst others. From our own members, speakers have included Dr. Paddy Waldron, Gerry Kennedy, Ger Madden, Declan Barron, Eric Shaw, Robert Cullen, and Larry Brennan. In addition, we have run a number of hands-on computer workshops on genealogical research and the recording of data. The society works in partnership with Clare County Library in order to add to the wonderful fund of genealogy information already available on their website www.clarelibrary.ie Our biggest project to date, completed in 2008 with the assistance of a grant from the Heritage Council of Ireland, involved transcription of the gravestones in the old Drumcliffe Cemetery.

  • Staffing Arrangements in Primary Schools for the 2019/20 School Year
Circular 0019/2019 TO BOARDS OF MANAGEMENT, PRINCIPAL TEACHERS AND TEACHING STAFF IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS Staffing arrangements in Primary Schools for the 2019/20 school year Introduction The purpose of this circular is to inform all primary school management and staff of the staffing arrangements for primary schools for the 2019/20 school year. The allocation of teaching posts to schools is contingent on schools complying with the redeployment arrangements in place for the 2019/20 school year. The redeployment of surplus permanent/CID holding teachers is the mechanism used to fill teaching posts and is key to the ability of the Department to manage within its payroll budget. Boards of Management will not be permitted to commence a recruitment process to fill a teaching vacancy until the Department is satisfied that vacant positions are not required for the redeployment of any remaining surplus permanent/CID holding teachers. The key points to note are: All existing Special Education cluster posts cease at the end of 2018/19 school year and schools should recluster part-time SET hours into full-time shared posts. Thursday 21st March 2019 is the key date for schools to: Notify relevant Panel Operator of any permanent or fixed term vacancy Notify the Department’s Primary Teacher Allocations Section of new Special Education Teacher cluster arrangements, using Form S.E.T.Cluster2019 (Appendix D) Return Main Redeployment Panel Application Form (Appendix E) for surplus permanent/CID holding teachers to the Department’s Primary Teacher Allocations

  • An Introduction to the History of Kilfenora – from the Beginning the Village of Kilfenora Is Situated in a Parish of the Same Name and in the Barony of Corcomroe
An introduction to the history of Kilfenora – From the beginning The village of Kilfenora is situated in a parish of the same name and in the barony of Corcomroe. The name Kilfenora “is thought to be in Irish Cill Fhionnúrach, meaning ‘Church of the White brow’, though ‘Church of the Fertile hillside’, Cill Fionnabrach, has also been suggested. This may relate to its situation at the foot of the….Burren….the limestone region of North Clare.” (R. Power, Kilfenora: a guide for pilgrims) The name also appears in various other forms such as Cathair Fhionnabhrach in the Book of Rights (450-902) Fenabor in 1189 and Fenaborens in 1302. Kilfenora has a deep-rooted history with a number of important phases which left their mark on the landscape that has survived up to the present day. Its surrounding landscape of the Burren has over 2,700 recorded monuments. This has led to the Burren being described as “one vast memorial to bygone cultures.” (The Burren. Naturally Yours) Neolithic Period (4000-2400BC) The Neolithic period is associated with the introduction of farming to Ireland. The people of this time built magnificent monuments to their dead. The Burren has a dense concentration of Megalithic tombs including a type known as a Portal Dolmen. One of the finest examples in the country of a Portal Dolmen, the table-like megalithic tomb, is found six miles North East of Kilfenora. It is the famous Portal Dolmen of Poulnabrone (Poll na Bron) where excavations revealed the remains of 33 people were buried here with associated artefacts.
