2 The University of Western Australia and the Second World War Nominal Roll Project Introduction

The University of Western Australia Historical Society (UWAHS) has compiled this nominal roll of University men and women who served in the Second World War to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of that war.

The names listed here are a ‘best guess’, based on lists of staff, students and graduates found in the University Archives and other sources. Where we have a full name and date of birth, we can be reasonably certain that names in the Department of Veterans’ Affairs nominal roll for World War Two are a match with the UWA individual.

However, sometimes we have only a nickname, initials or one forename. In such cases, we cannot be sure that we have the correct individual. Here, place of enlistment has enabled us to narrow our search. However, there were individuals who had identical names but different birth dates and place of birth, making identification more difficult. Some men enlisted in overseas forces, and although some information is available to us, we have not yet had access to their service records. These, and other instances which are still under investigation, are indicated with an asterisk (*).

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) nominal rolls have been compiled from service records and other records held in the National Archives of Australia. We have found that there are some typographical errors in the DVA transcriptions, but they are generally reliable.

The National Archives files can be searched, and some records have been digitized, allowing us to gain further information on an individual’s service.

Many UWA students who served in the War never graduated. The Wolff Royal Commission into the administration of the University, which presented its report in 1942, found that around 50% of the students who enrolled in the years leading up to the War did not graduate within five years, and so called for more stringent admission requirements.

Some individuals on this list later completed medical degrees at other universities because UWA did not open a Medical School until 1957. During these years, many Teachers’ College students enrolled in single university units before country postings made it difficult to complete a full course.

On the basis of the present search, this figure did not change very much as a result of the war. Post-war assistance to servicemen and women to attend University made a significant contribution to rates of graduation.

An estimated 53 UWA people died at war. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission website has enabled us to identify the final resting place of those who died in battle or otherwise while on service. A significant number of men died in flying accidents while in Australia.

The DVA nominal roll identifies prisoners of war, as well as honours awarded. A number of RAAF men were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, including one awarded to Stan Dilkes by the American Air Force, which does not appear on his DVA record.

The names of UWA students and graduates who went on to high public office appear in the records, including the Hon. Billy Snedden and Mr Justice Virtue. Surgeon Lieutenant Alan John Gray served on the HMAS Sydney until just a few months before its final voyage. Engineering undergraduates and graduates often chose the RAAF for their war service. Many stayed in the forces throughout their careers, rising to the highest ranks.

University women also served, some in personnel roles, others in hospitals, and one appears to have been a gunner. Sheila McClemans left her mark on the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service. A number of women undertook ‘war effort’ without enlisting and thus do not appear in the nominal roll. Architect, Margaret Pitt Morison was a camoufleur, designing camouflage for silos and other port storage installations. Lecturer in French, Jean Randall, was honoured by the French government with a Palme d’Or for her work with the Free French Resistance.Kathleen Gordon (BA 1922) was leader of the National Fitness Council’s women’s training course as part of Australia’s War effort, eventually rising to the position of Commonwealth National Fitness Officer.

The DVA records show only the position of an individual on discharge from the forces. The heroic service of many University staff, students and graduates can only be revealed through personal reminiscence or digitized service records. We welcome your feedback. If you find an error, or if you would like to share further information about a serviceman or woman, please contact the UWA Historical Society at [email protected].

Students on steps in front of Administration Building – 15 July 1944 UWA Archives 3005P

0n a bright sunny February day in 1943, I walked along King’s Park Road, cut across the Park, clambered down Jacob’s Ladder and took a trolley bus on Mounts Bay Road to alight at the University of Western Australia. Small groups of students were gathering on Whitfeld Court for lunch or to relax between classes. Dr Currie would soon emerge for his daily walk before lunch with his wife. A gregarious man, he chatted with students on his way, coming to know more of them than any other Vice-Chancellor. He and Mrs Currie often entertained students in their delightful garden at Tuart House, the official university residence, overlooking the river. Social intermingling on campus was perpetuated by wives of academics who often held afternoon tea parties for students.

The year 1942 was critical in World War Two, dominated in Australia by fear of a Japanese invasion in the north-west. However, in 1943 the enrolment at UWA rose from 604 in the previous year to 706, suggesting that male school leavers were divided about enrolling or enlisting and that servicemen were beginning to drift back to the campus. The streets of and Fremantle were packed with English, Dutch and American naval personnel. Officers gathered at well patronised social clubs in buildings allocated to them on the UWA campus. Catalinas (flying boats) were moored on Crawley Bay. In response to a casual invitation that we did not really believe, Robin Chennell Smith and I were taken on a courtesy flight to Albany to be met by Mayor Barnesby accompanied by dignitaries whom I had known in my childhood.

The Refectory (Ref) managed by Peg Gillespie, was not only for eating, but a place for mixed activities and where we (Pat Skevington, Kitty Robertson, Robin Chennell Smith, Philip Parsons, Tim Clarke, Pud Olden, Dick Marmion and others) had ‘our’ table where current campus events and possible dramatic productions were discussed. ‘The Women’, considered avant garde, created quite a stir. Friday night ‘hops’, which benefited from some surprisingly trendy local bands, were very popular. Should I miss the tram (midnight straggler) to walk through King’ s Park was the alternative way home. Probably more bewildering for girls than boys. Some young women like Valerie Sinclair, Mary Roe and Pat Miller joined the WRANS. Others married, took up wartime occupations or struggled on with their intended courses unless, like Law in 1942-43, they had been suspended. Mostly students or potential students went on active service, while practising academics used their skills working for agencies in support of wartime requirements. It was a very disturbed world, dependent on radio for news in the absence of television and more sophisticated communications.

Roll of Honour from St George’s College

George Munns (1906 - 1978)

Herbert George Munns was born in Boulder and the family moved to Perth in 1918. As an unemployed man during the Depression, George was lucky to get several weeks labouring at the University site clearing the grounds for the Irwin Street buildings to be re-located. The job came through contact at church with Oliver Dowell, a University gardener. Soon after, Munns was employed as a labourer and from 1932 until 1971 it was his life’s work. The gardeners lived in University accommodation in Parkway and Fairway, as prior to the advent of reticulated water, their after-hours availability for watering was necessary.

Called up for service with the Army Labour Corps, the University confirmed he had been in its employ for ten years. Asa member of the Brethren church he registered as a conscientious objector available for non-combatant duties. He served in the Citizens Military Forces in the Army Medical Corps with active service in WA, but he was sent to New Guinea to work on the Australian jungle trunk-line maintenance.

After discharge in 1945 Munns returned to the University as Gardener, and in 1946 the Senate informed him he was promoted to Foreman Gardener. Later, Munns reminded Senate that due to war service he was four years overdue for long service leave. In 1951 the Vice-Chancellor approved a request by Mr Munns to hold over long service leave until after the planned Royal Visit in March 1952. In 1955, Registrar A J Williams informed him that Senate had altered his title to Curator of Grounds. To general approval he was awarded an Honorary Master of Arts degree in 1969.

Aubyn Dimmitt (1914 – 1942)

Aubyn WJ Dimmitt BE (1938) was employed by Fogden, Brisbane and Co as a civil engineer in Singapore in oil storage construction at the naval base. He was one of six UWA Engineering graduates whose deaths during the War were commemorated with a prize established in 1946 and now included in the prize for final year Civil Engineering students.

The following news item in 25 October 1945 reported:

Mr James A. Dimmitt, M.L.C, has received advice that his son Aubyn, who remained in Singapore at the request of the Admiralty to undertake demolition, died on an unnamed island on which he was shipwrecked with Rear Admiral Spooner and Air Vice-Marshal Pullford, both of whom also died there ... His wife and young daughter escaped from Singapore and are resident in Perth.

Japanese forces destroyed many of the ships leaving Singapore in the days before the surrender on 15 February 1942. One of the vessels was the ML 310 transporting US Rear Admiral Spooner, RAF Air Vice Marshal Pullford and some 40 others. Attacked by Japanese aircraft, its passengers were stranded on Chibia, an uninhabited island. There was almost no fresh water. Despite British search efforts, the stranded refugees remained on the island for two months before malaria and starvation forced the survivors to surrender.

Sheila McClemans (1909 - 1988)

Born in Claremont, Sheila Mary McClemans attended and was among the first female law graduates from UWA. She became the first woman barrister to appear before the WA Supreme Court. In 1933 during the Depression, she and Molly Kingston established the State’s first all-women law firm. Sheila then worked with Hardwick, Slattery and Gibson until 1943, when she enlisted in the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service and was posted to HMAS Cerberus at Westernport, Victoria, in the inaugural WRANS officer training course.

Despite the RAN’s frustratingly conservative hierarchy, she was rapidly promoted. In August 1945 she was appointed Chief Officer. The following year she represented the WRANS in London at the Victory March. In her paper, ‘Proposals for a Permanent WRANS’ (1947), she reiterated her belief that the RAN had failed to adequately support the WRANS.

In 1949 Sheila married Frank Kenworthy. She returned to law and set up a large private practice. She sold her firm in 1960 to concentrate on her broader commitments which included national president (1950-1952) of the Australian Federation of University Women; member (1977-1980) of the Legal Aid Commission and the Parole Board of Western Australia. She was appointed OBE 1951, CMG 1977 and awarded the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal.

Her portrait by Nora Heysen is held by the Australian War Memorial ADB and personal information (Wendy Birman)

Jean Kahan (1916 – 2013)

Jean Catherine Kahan, born in Perth, was a UWA Science graduate of 1939. From 1940 she worked as a volunteer with Dr Cyril Fortune to organise blood grouping as her part of the war effort, taking samples from enlistees at Swanbourne Barracks. At the time only Melbourne had such a unit and on Dr Fortune’s advice the Army established a unit in each state. Jean later headed the WA Unit, and travelled to Melbourne to learn the processes, purchase necessary equipment and bring it back on the troop train. She labelled the delicate precision instruments ‘Eggs Handle with Care’ and carried it as personal luggage.

The US Navy seconded two Laboratory Technicians to the Unit and she trained 25 women with no previous scientific background as assistants in the demanding tasks. Using items such as dairy cream separators, glass piping, and sourcing special filter pads from the Swan Brewery, the Unit relied on a locally-sourced refrigerated compartment. It was installed in the 110 Australian General Hospital, Pathology Department at Hollywood Repatriation Hospital.

Jean served in the Australian Army, Australian Blood and Serum Preparation Unit, with the rank of Lieutenant, from 1942 until 1946.

Jean remained a supporter of the UWA Art Gallery Collection, dedicated a scholarly research program in Chemistry named for her father Roual Kahan, and was an active member of Convocation.

Kathleen (Kit) Gray (1911 - 1994)

Kathleen (Kitty) Mary Patricia Sawkins was born in Sydney. She graduated in Agricultural Science from Sydney University (1934). Awarded the Davis Gelatine Company’s Post-graduate Scholarship to study medical bacteriology, Gray worked as a bacteriologist for the company from 1935 to 1939.

She was ‘manpowered’ as a Resident Microbiologist at Perth Hospital, ‘on call’ from 1939 to 1943.

She reported: As the war proceeded, my staff diminished and I carried out the duties of haematologist, blood bank assistant, microbiologist, took pathological sections and conducted post mortems. My staff comprised a Graduate Assistant, a laboratory boy and a typist. There was occasional access to an Honorary Pathologist and collaboration with the Medical Superintendent, Dr Ray Meucke.

I had an ‘austerity’ wedding on New Year’s Day, 1942, and was back to work the next day! The air raid on Broome looms large in my memory. The Dutch refugees who had survived were flown to Perth and admitted to Perth Hospital. Most of the patients had burns from swimming through burning fuel on the surface, and very few could speak English. The treatment was basic, with constant checks to control their body fluids. Patients were placed in the wards and verandas, with canvas blinds as the only protection from the weather.

Kit Gray was an active member of Convocation committees. In 1976, Convocation elected her to the UWA Senate. She served until 1988.

Eric Silbert (1922 - 2007)

Eric Abraham Silbert was born in Fremantle and attended Christian Brothers College (CBC) Fremantle then Aquinas College. He served in the 622 Squadron, RAAF, 3 Group, Bomber Command and 7 Squadron, Pathfinder Force and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Honoured with an AM, he was an appointed member of the UWA Senate (1975-1986), a Deputy Lord Mayor of the , a Rotarian and was active with many organisations, particularly in the Jewish community.

An interview was recorded in 2003 for the Australians at War Archive. These comments are drawn from the transcript.

After a trip to Singapore with the YAL aged seventeen, I worked for Mum and Dad in the store. We were very conscious of the problems Jewish people were having, we knew that people were going somewhere and not going to come back. Rabbi Freedman, who was a chaplain in the First World War, called the young men aged eighteen to thirty to a meeting, saying, “It looks as though war is going to break out.” This is 1938. “We think the Jewish boys should join the various CMF [Citizens’ Military Force], engineers and artillery”, and a high percentage of them did. So when war broke out ... it wasn’t a matter of if you were going to join up, it was a matter of what you were going to join. I used to come home and say, “Kevin’s joined the air force. Peter’s joined the air force,” which was not a very subtle way of saying that I want to join the air force. I take my hat off to the parents of the day and to my parents in particular, because they had to sign on the dotted line before you were twenty-one.

I was in the first course that went into Clontarf and you had to pass every subject to go onto the next level .... air engines, air frames, physics, maths, sound and of course, drill and all of those military things. To get into aircrew was the most difficult of all of the services.

When I went in, fourteen guys stood up when we walked in the door, and three of us came out at the other end. We joined the British Empire Air Scheme ... we were RAAF and Canadian air force but it all grew out of the Empire Air Training School affectionately known as EATS.

Roma Craze (1909 - 1988)

Roma Marian Craze was born in Melbourne. The family moved to Western Australia after the First World War and lived in Cottesloe.

Her schooling was at MLC, then at PLC, and the University of Western Australia, where she graduated BA in 1936. She left Perth in 1938 and worked briefly in Germany, but left for England several days before War was declared in 1939.

An uncle had arranged a meeting for her with a contact in the Foreign Office. Five weeks later, Craze signed the Official Secrets Act and was given a rail ticket to Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire. She was one of the first five women to be seconded to the secret facility where analysts and codebreakers were based, listening to broadcasts and reading intercepted communications to find the coding patterns hidden within. Craze was at Bletchley Park for the duration of the war, putting her language skills to good use in the Signals Intelligence and Traffic Analysis group, which was charged with recording and analysing activity on enemy radio networks.

Bound by the Official Secrets Act, Craze did not speak about her wartime experiences until old age, merely noting in the 1991 PLC News that she “spent the war years in England, where she met and married her husband John Gornall”. They returned to NSW where they farmed for nearly forty years.

Little was known of her contribution to the war effort, and the risks she took, until 2014 when a former PLC classmate made a chance reference to Craze’s War work.

Frederick Chaney (1914 – 2001)

Sir Frederick Charles Chaney was born in Fremantle and educated at Aquinas College. With limited job opportunities during the Depression, he applied for a position in the WA Education Department rather than pursue Engineering at the University. He was appointed to a one-teacher school at Jarrahwood, then to Malyalling, where he stayed until the outbreak of war. There the future Administrator of the Northern Territory met Les Johnson, a future Administrator of Papua New Guinea, who was at a neighbouring one-teacher school. Both enlisted, Chaney in the RAAF and Johnson in the Army.

He trained as a pilot, qualifying as a flying instructor before serving in Papua New Guinea and Borneo. He flew Auster aircraft with 16 Air Observation Flight, directing artillery fire and rescuing wounded from combat zones or behind enemy lines. ‘The courage skill and resourcefulness’ he displayed in several hazardous rescue operations in Borneo won him the Air Force Cross.

His involvement with the RSL, which he joined on discharge from the RAAF in 1945, led to him becoming the first World War Two returned service man to become a State President. After three years he resigned to enter politics. Chaney was elected to the House of Representatives as Member for Perth in 1955. He later served as Administrator of the Northern Territory (1970 to 1973) and as Lord Mayor of the City of Perth (1978 to 1982). Frederick Chaney was knighted in 1982.

Basil Balme (1923 - )

Perth born Basil Eric Balme had entered St George’s College and commenced study at the University but joined the navy in 1940 and spent most of the war on dangerous convoy duty around the Mediterranean and Britain.

I was largely involved in convoy duties, escorting other ships throughout the Mediterranean and England. I originally trained as a radar operator and spent all the war years at sea either on English cruisers or corvettes. For several months I was on board with Philip Mountbatten, who would later become Prince Philip, and I remember having several conversations with him.

One of the most vivid memories I have is of sinking a Japanese submarine after we dropped bombs on it. We just had to accept what we had to do.

After the war, Balme returned to the University to complete his BSc Honours (1948) in oil geology, and from there he won a Fulbright scholarship to Harvard University in the US, after which he worked at the University of New York. He completed his Doctorate in Science in 1969 at UWA and was a member of staff for many years.

Noel Bayliss (1906 - 1996)

Sir Noel Stanley Bayliss was born in Brisbane and educated at Melbourne University, Oxford, and Berkeley, California. He was appointed Professor of Chemistry and Head of Department at UWA, 1938 to 1971.

During World War Two, he was Chief Warden for Civil Defence in Western Australia. When war appeared imminent in the middle of 1939, the WA government organised an Air Raid Precaution campaign. Because of a hangover from the First World War they placed an emphasis on anti-gas measures, and looked for someone with knowledge of chemistry to take a leading role. Bayliss was appointed to the honorary position until 1943. By then, it had become apparent that gas attacks were not going to play a part in the war and the emphasis shifted to high explosives and fire.

Cessation of hostilities in 1945 brought new responsibilities. The University expanded rapidly in the period 1946-48 due to the influx of ex-service men and women under the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme, with expansion of facilities and extra staff members.

Noel Bayliss was Acting Vice-Chancellor in 1948 and from 1952 to 1953. He was a member of the UWA Senate from 1945 to 1949 and from 1951 to 1959.

Ronald Wilson (1922 - 2005)

Sir Ronald Darling Wilson was born in Geraldton. He left school at the age of 14 and took a job as a messenger with the Geraldton Local Court.

In September 1941 he enlisted in the army reserve, known at the time as the Militia and was posted to the 44th Battalion. This battalion was part of a Special Mobile Force stationed in coastal areas between Perth and Geraldton, to respond in the event of an attack by Japanese forces.

Transferring to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in July 1942, Wilson received pilot training under the Empire Air Training Scheme, and was posted to the UK for operations with RAAF formations. By the end of the war he was serving with No. 287 Squadron RAF, an anti-aircraft cooperation unit assisting in the training of anti-aircraft gunners. Wilson flew Spitfires, among other types of aircraft. He was discharged from the RAAF on 14 February 1946, with the rank of Flying Officer.

After returning to Australia, Wilson enrolled in the University of Western Australia, finishing a Law degree in 1949. He completed a Master of Laws degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1957, as a Fulbright scholar. He was a distinguished Australian lawyer, serving on the High Court of Australia between 1979 and 1989, and with Mick Dodson led the ‘Bringing them Home’ report on the Stolen Generation.

Alexander Kerr (1921 – 2018)

Alexander McBride Kerr joined WA Newspapers as a trainee journalist, then the Army in 1936, before enlisting in the Air Force in April 1940, becoming a pilot with 115 Squadron (RAAF). While flying above Germany in 1941, his plane was shot down. A badly wounded Kerr parachuted out and was taken to a POW hospital and seven months later to a POW camp, where he studied at the ‘barbed-wire university’ with the help of the Red Cross. His captivity was broken by various attempts at escape, including a tunnel escape that was, at the time, the biggest of the war. His third attempt – during a Death March in 1945 – proved successful, and he miraculously made it back to London.

Upon returning home in 1945 Kerr enrolled at UWA where, during his student years, he was a member of the Guild Council, President of the Arts Council and Vice-President of the University Liberal Party and keen sportsman. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Master of Arts and PhD.

Initially appointed to a temporary lectureship in the Department of Economics, Kerr remained with UWA until 1975 when he resigned to become a professor at Murdoch University and later Deputy Vice-Chancellor. In 2004, Kerr was made a Member of the Order of Australia. He received an Honorary Doctorate from UWA in 2006.

William Cuthbertson (1914 - 1944)

A West Perth boy, William Robert Cuthbertson attended Hale School where he was dux in both 1930 and 1931. He was at St George’s College from 1934 to 1937. One of the founders of the University Camp for Boys (later Camp for Kids) which was manned and run before the war by St George’s students, Bill was memorable as the first camp cook.

After gaining Bachelor of Science (1936) and Master of Science degrees from UWA, he sailed for England and completed his PhD at Leeds University before embarking on a career as a research scientist. He worked briefly for the Wool Industries Research Association in Leeds where he co-authored a paper on The Action of Alkalis on Wool (Biochemical Journal, 1945). The paper was not received until 28 July 1944, by which time Bill had been killed.

Bill joined the RAF and trained as a navigator, being posted 101 Squadron, RAF Ludford Magna in Lincolnshire. From here its Lancaster crews participated in the battle of Hamburg and the raid on the secret German rocket site at Peenemunde. A German-speaking operator joined each crew to scan the German wireless frequencies and use transmitters on the aircraft to jam those supporting Luftwaffe night fighters. However, the signals emitted by this equipment also made the aircraft easy to home onto and 101 Squadron suffered heavy losses as a result. They flew on more raids than any other bomber squadron and suffered the highest casualties of any RAF unit in the war, losing 1176 aircrew killed in action.

Bill Cuthbertson and the crew of his Lancaster died on 1 July 1944 and are buried at Langon Village, 50km south-east of Blois.

Frank Sublet (1910 – 2002)

Born in Meekatharra, Frank Henry Sublet enrolled as a student at UWA but did not complete a degree. He enlisted in the 2/16th Battalion in 1937, and during World War Two, saw service in the Syria Campaign, where he was awarded the Military Cross Middle East in 1942, for ‘outstanding gallantry and initiative’, through ‘strong defensive fire’ in the Litani River battle. In New Guinea, he was mentioned in despatches for his ‘absolute disregard for his own personal safety’ in battle and he had ‘twice crossed the Owen Stanley Ranges’ with barely a rest’.

He was awarded the Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (Imperial) – Army-South West Pacific following the capture of Mount Malang in Balikpapan, Borneo on 1 July 1945. ‘Throughout the day, he consistently set a high example of personal courage to his troops. The unqualified success of the battalion’s work was undoubtedly due to Lt Col Sublet’s …masterly direction … of the plan of operation… he showed out as an outstandingly efficient, fearless, aggressive and balanced leader’.

In 1946 he was treated relatively leniently when he faced a court martial in Balikpapan for ‘borrowing’ a LaSalle Sedan, ‘property of the Commonwealth of Australia which had been entrusted to his care’. After a ‘severe reprimand’ and loss of 18 days’ pay, his army career continued. In 1947 he toured Australia as Inspector for the Commonwealth Department of Labour and National Service, assessing manpwer availability and requirements. He retired in 1954 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Neville Teede (1924 – 1992)

Neville Hamlin Teede was born at Bunbury and attended Bunbury High School.

Having served with the 29th Garrison Battalion, Citizen Military Forces, Teede enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1942. He trained as a navigator in Australia and England, and in August 1944 joined No. 462 Squadron. He was reported missing when his Halifax bomber was hit by enemy fire at 15,000 feet (5,000m) near Dortmund, Germany, on 8 March 1945. He had parachuted to the ground, suffering only a sprained ankle, and was captured by German villagers. He and his comrades were marched between camps, some escaping along the way, and were rescued later in the month by American forces. On 14 April he was promoted to temporary warrant officer. Returning to Australia in July, he was discharged on 20 December.

Under the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme, Teede studied English at UWA (BA Hons, 1950). As President of the University Dramatic Society he participated in many productions. He later studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, England, playing in its 1954 European Tour. In 1956 he returned to Australia, performing major roles at the Playhouse Theatre, and tutoring and lecturing at the University, successfully combining academic duties with appearances as a professional actor.

John Birman (1913 - 1989)

Chaim Jojna Birman was born in Warsaw in 1913. He gained a BA from Free University of Poland and married bacteriologist Louisa (Laja) in 1933. As a free-lance journalist he was disturbed about gathering war clouds and decided to emigrate to Australia, leaving Louisa in Warsaw until he settled. He arrived at Fremantle in December 1938, stayed briefly in Melbourne, before settling in Sydney. There he learnt his entire family including his wife had been killed during the German invasion of Warsaw in September 1939.

Although regarded as an alien (he was not naturalised until 1944), Birman enlisted in the AIF in 1942 and was posted to Papua New Guinea with the 17th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery attached to an American contingent.

In 1943 he transferred to the Western Command Army Education Unit commanded by Major/Professor Fred Alexander, who needed to return to the UWA History Department, leaving the command to Sergeant Birman. He later described landing at Nookanbah in a RAAF DC3 to deliver a grand piano needed for troops’ concerts.

Discharged in 1945, Birman initially worked at the Tasmanian State Library. In 1948 he became Assistant Director of UWA Adult Education Board. In 1953 Alexander and Birman launched the inaugural Festival of Perth. He complemented his Polish degree with a UWA equivalent in 1956. Birman was Festival of Perth Director until 1975, and Director of UWA’s Extension Service from 1972 until 1978.

Fred Alexander (1899-1996)

Historian and adult education and arts administrator, Fred Alexander was born and educated in Melbourne. At Trinity College, , he switched from Law to Arts, majoring in history, before taking up a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford. Following a brief interlude in Europe he joined the staff of UWA in 1924. Two sabbaticals provided an attachment to the League of Nations in Geneva and to the Australian External Affairs Department in Washington, USA. He became the inaugural Head of the History Department at UWA in 1931 and Professor of History in 1948.

From 1941 Alexander also held the joint positions of Director of the Adult Education Board (AEB) and Major in Charge of Army Education at Western Command. An energetic man with a sharp intellect, shock of greying hair, lover of music, drama and the visual arts, he also had a keen interest in the development of UWA.

He gained experience and knowledge as a Rhodes Travelling Fellow in Europe (1932 to 1933) and a Rockefeller Fellow in the USA (1939 to 1940), and he also worked at universities in the USA, Canada, India and South Africa. At UWA he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts (1934 to 1937, 1952 to 1954, and 1962 to 1964), Chairman of the Professorial Board (1954 to 1955) and a member or chair of numerous advisory committees. Current affairs and modern history were his chosen disciplines and his publications included his monumental UWA Golden Jubilee history, Campus at Crawley. His students and far flung adult education groups remained his top priorities. The Festival of Perth emerged from the AEB’s community arts programmes, Alexander launching the first Festival in February 1953.

Hugh Fowler (1891 - 1946)

Hugh Lionel Fowler arrived in WA from England aged five and was educated at state schools, the High School (now Hale) and the Teachers’ Training College at Claremont. In 1913 he was in the first cohort of students at the new University (BA 1916). He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in 1915 as a private in the 44th Battalion, was commissioned in May 1916 and in January 1918 promoted to captain; he was wounded twice.

In 1931 he was the first local graduate to become a lecturer at the new Crawley location of UWA. He pioneered the Department of Psychology and in 1938 became an associate professor. He built a department with facilities and equipment for practical work ‘far in advance of most other Psychology departments in the British Commonwealth at that time’.

Soon after the outbreak of World War Two Fowler enlisted in the Army but in 1941, while serving in Australia, he was discharged due to acute bronchitis and asthma. He re-enlisted in May 1942 to establish the Australian Army Psychology Service in Melbourne as Deputy Assistant Adjutant General (Psychology) with the rank of temporary major and promoted to major in September.

Fowler was the elected Warden of Convocation on two occasions; 1934-35 and 1940-41.

Frank Callaway (1919 - 2003)

Sir Frank Adams Callaway was born in New Zealand. His early education was difficult due to the Depression, but he found a position in a firm of stationers and printers while continuing his violin studies and community musical activities.

When war began he enlisted for overseas service but was instead invited to join the New Zealand Air Force Central Band, playing bassoon and making musical arrangements for the Band. After two years he was given leave to become Head of Music at King Edward Technical College in Dunedin and to study part-time at Otago University from which he graduated MusB. A scholarship enabled him to undertake further study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, as well as a study visit to America before returning to New Zealand.

Callaway took up the position of Reader in Music in the Faculty of Education at UWA in 1953. He became Foundation Professor of Music in 1959 and was Head of Department until his retirement in 1984. He conducted the University Choral Society and lobbied for the installation of the pipe organ in Winthrop Hall. Callaway served terms on the Professorial Board, as Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and as a board member of the Festival of Perth. He became an internationally recognised figure in music education, serving as Treasurer, President and Honorary President of the International Society for Music Education, as well as President of the International Music Council of UNESCO. He was knighted in 1981.

Arthur Williams (1913 - 2009)

Arthur John Williams enrolled at the University’s new Crawley campus in 1930 while also attending Claremont Teachers’ College. He was active in a wide range of student sports and served as President of Sports Council (1939) and President of the Guild Council (1940). He was Convocation’s elected Senate member for the following three years.

In 1942 he joined the Army, enlisting in the AIF. Williams was part of the Western Command Army Education Unit under the command of Major/ Professor Fred Alexander .

This experience led to the appointment, on discharge, of Lieut. A. J. Williams, to the position of Assistant Director of the Adult Education Board at the University and several years later the position of Assistant Registrar. Following the appointment of Col Sanders as Professor of Education, Williams was promoted to Registrar.

Williams held the position for 25 years and was involved in the post-war expansion of student numbers from 2,000 to 10,000. His role in the record keeping of the Senate and virtually every aspect of administration, legislation and publication, and mentoring of staff through those years was widely acknowledged as having been quite exceptional.

He was appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Charles Learmonth (1917 - 1944)

When World War Two pilot Charles Cuthbertson Learmonth, first husband of Marjorie Le Souef, received the Distinguished Flying Cross for sinking a Japanese destroyer in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea in 1943, his citation read: ‘He has displayed tactical ability amounting to genius.’ The next year, at the age of 26, he went down in a Beaufort bomber about 30km off the WA coast at Sorrento. The Royal Australian Air Force named Learmonth Airport, south of Exmouth, in his honour.

Biographer and aviation writer Charles Page said Learmonth flew all over WA with 14 Squadron in convoy patrols in 1939 and married Marjorie Chapple in 1942 before being posted to New Guinea. He led five Boston bombers from 22 Squadron in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, where he sank a Japanese destroyer and was awarded the DFC. He was posted back to Perth as a wing commander and died on a training flight in January 1944 between Pearce and Rottnest Island in the notoriously dangerous Beaufort bomber. “He stood no chance of surviving and all the way down he reported the problem and after that the RAAF corrected it, probably saving many lives,” Mr Page said.

UWA student Frederick Erick Chidlow (1917 to 1944) died with him. Marjorie Learmonth, who had served with the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), was one of the women who established the War Widows Guild in 1945. She married distinguished war surgeon Lt Colonel Lesley Ernest Le Souef in 1947. He was a member of the UWA Senate (1936-43, 1945, 1947-77) and Warden of Convocation (1965-68).

Stanley Prescott (1910 - 1978)

Sir Stanley Lewis Prescott was educated at Tetbury Grammar School and attended the Victoria University of Manchester where he was Wild Prizeman in Pharmacology in 1934. He lectured at Manchester Medical School and in 1936 was appointed Professor of Physiology at the Cheeloo (Shantung Christian) University, Tsinan, China. During the Japanese invasion in 1938 he was Superintendent of the Tsinan Hospital. The family escaped to Australia in 1941 and Prescott was commissioned in the RAAF as a Junior Intelligence Officer. As Squadron Leader he commanded No. 1 Flying Personnel Research Unit in Melbourne dealing with aviation medicine. After discharge, Prescott was appointed Master of Ormond College, University of Melbourne, and then UWA Vice-Chancellor in 1953. His challenges included the creation of new faculties in Medicine, Architecture, Economics and Commerce, and attracting Commonwealth and State funding to enable a substantial building programme for a functional Arts building and an enlarged Library. One of Prescott’s significant decisions was to request a revised master plan of the proposed buildings to reflect the style of the existing structures and thus be a unifying factor across the campus. He served on the Commission of Enquiry on the University of Malaya (1957) Nanyang University Commission (1959) the Commonwealth Universities Commission and the Royal Perth Hospital Board. He chaired the Australian Vice-Chancellors’ Committee (1962 to 1964), and was a member of the Murdoch University Planning Board (1971 to 1973) and the Senate of Murdoch University (1973 to 1976). Stanley Prescott was knighted in 1965.

John Glover (1924 - 2020)

Joseph John Edmund Glover was born at Mount Barker and home schooled before winning a scholarship to Perth Modern School in 1937. He commenced Geology at UWA in 1941 but deferred studies for RAAF service.

He joined the RAAF in 1943, training in Canada as a wireless-operator air-gunner to serve in bombers. However, he was discharged in 1945 as a Flight Sergeant, shortly after Hiroshima, without having seen active service.

After the war he achieved his prizewinning Honours degree in Geology in 1949 and joined the Bureau of Mineral Resources in Canberra. A Fulbright Scholarship in 1950 enabled him to gain his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. He rejoined the Bureau in 1953, and worked for Australian Oilfields N.L. in Queensland.

In 1955 he returned to UWA as Lecturer in Geology, promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1958. Glover resided at St George’s College where he was Resident Tutor during the 1970s. He was Head of the Geology and Geophysics Department from 1985 to 1988. Glover was the prime mover in establishing the Edward de Courcy Clarke Earth Science Museum. He retired in 1990 but continued as Senior Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Earth and Environment until 2014.

The Right Rev Charles Lawrence ‘Tom’ Riley was a son of Archbishop C O L Riley, the inaugural Warden of Convocation of UWA. Tom arrived in WA with the family in 1895. He took Holy Orders in 1912 at Caius College Cambridge and his additional university qualifications were MA and LLB (Cantab) and later DTheol from the Australian College of Theology. He was a junior chaplain in Palestine for a year and a half during the First World War at the time when his father was Chaplain General. On his return to Perth he served in several parish positions in Western Australia, including North Perth. C L Riley was elected Warden of Convocation for the period 1932 to 1934. He was then Archdeacon in Northam before being appointed Bishop of Bendigo in 1938, a position he held until 1957. For the early years of World War Two (1940 to 1941), he was a senior chaplain and then became the Chaplain General of the AIF from 1942 until 1957. Returning to Perth Riley once again stood for and was elected Warden of Convocation between 1958 and 1961. As Warden he endeavoured to promote the desirability of an Honour Board for those who fell in World War Two. The motion was proposed to the Senate seeking its assistance, but in effect it was returned to Convocation with the suggestion that it should complete such a task. There seemed not to be the energy or the available funds to fulfil the desire, which was a disheartening outcome for the Warden who had seen the War from a different and personal standpoint. Riley was awarded OBE (1920) and CBE (1942). He was a keen philatelist and assembled a significant study of the famous WA stamp, the Fourpenny Blue lithograph which he donated to the State. It is held by the WA Museum.

Frank Beasley (1897 - 1976)

Educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford, Frank Reginald Beasley was sent for reasons of health in 1914 to join relations in Western Australia. On 10 May 1915 he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and served with the 11th Battalion at Gallipoli and in France; he was promoted to lieutenant on 21 November 1916. Granted leave in 1919, he studied with the Council of Legal Education, London, and at Wadham College, Oxford, where he graduated (BA, 1920) with honours in jurisprudence. He returned to Australia and was demobilized in October 1920. in 1927 Beasley was appointed foundation Professor of Law at the University of Western Australia

He was appointed acting Vice-Chancellor following the death of H. E. Whitfeld in 1939.

Called up for full-time duty with the Militia in October 1941, Captain Beasley was seconded on 27 July 1942 as Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General at 4th Divisional headquarters, Western Australia. Having transferred to the AIF, he was promoted to temporary major in September, but lack of opportunity for active service prompted his return in 1943 to the University where tuition in law had been suspended.
