OLD BOYS UNITED KINGDOM BRANCH Branch Members United Kingdom Branch Michaelhouse Old Boys’ Club 24th August 2016 SECRETARY’S SUMMER LETTER Gentlemen, I write to you having recently returned from the Centenary Commemorations of the Battle of Delville Wood, France. Here a contingent of fifty Old Boys, their families and members of Michaelhouse staff congregated to remember the five Michaelhousians who fell there, as well as the 38 who were killed in action elsewhere during the Great War. The weekend included a fascinating tour of the Somme, led by the renowned author and raconteur, David Walsh. Commemoration Ceremonies were held at the Thiepval Memorial where Gary Ralfe (Chairman of the Board of Governors) and Nigel Tatham (a descendent of one of the fallen) laid wreaths on behalf of the Michaelhouse Community. A moving service, led by Canon Fred Pitout (Old Boys’ Club Secretary), at the grave a Rector Brown was an opportunity for those attending to reflect on the immense sacrifice made by so many. This proved to be an interesting and poignant weekend which I am delighted the UK Branch could play a part in. A full recording of the South African Ceremony at Thiepval Memorial can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yxw0BeAw1N0. There are also a few photos attached to this letter. Our first event this year was an informal gathering, held at the Hereford Arms in South Kensington in March. About twenty Old Boys attended, ranging from matric of 1962 to 2009. This was followed by the Live Screening in London of the Hilton vs Michaelhouse 1st Team Hockey and Rugby matches.

Simon Major General Harry Hill Bandholtz was America’s representative to the Inter-Allied Supreme Command’s Military Mission in Hungary at the end of World War I. Before the first world war, Bandholtz was Chief of the American Constabulary in the Philippines from 1907 until 1913. During WWI Bandholtz was the Provost Marshal General in General Pershing’s American Expeditionary Forces in France. His organization, 463 officers and 15,912 men, was the world’s largest military police command at the time. Directing it was a huge responsibility. Despite his qualifications and experience, his six-month assignment to Budapest was apparently the most frustrating encounter in General Bandholtz’s distinguished military career.

  • THE HISTORY of the PIETERSBURG [POLOKWANE] JEWISH COMMUNITY by CHARLOTTE WIENER Submitted in Fulfillment of the Requirements
THE HISTORY OF THE PIETERSBURG [POLOKWANE] JEWISH COMMUNITY by CHARLOTTE WIENER Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the subject JUDAICA at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: MR CEDRIC GINSBERG NOVEMBER 2006 SUMMARY Jews were present in Pietersburg [Polokwane] from the time of its establishment in 1868. They came from Lithuania, England and Germany. They were attracted by the discovery of gold, land and work opportunities. The first Jewish cemetery was established on land granted by President Paul Kruger in 1895. The Zoutpansberg Hebrew Congregation, which included Pietersburg and Louis Trichardt was established around 1897. In 1912, Pietersburg founded its own congregation, the Pietersburg Hebrew Congregation. A Jewish burial society, a benevolent society and the Pietersburg-Zoutpansberg Zionist Society was formed. A communal hall was built in 1921 and a synagogue in 1953. Jews contributed to the development of Pietersburg and held high office. There was little anti-Semitism. From the 1960s, Jews began moving to the cities. The communal hall and minister’s house were sold in 1994 and the synagogue in 2003. Only the Jewish cemetery remains in Pietersburg. 10 key words: 1] Pietersburg [Polokwane] 2] Zoutpansberg 3] Anglo-Boer War 4] Jew 5] Synagogue 6] Cemetery 7] Rabbi 8] Hebrew 9] Zionist 10] Anti-Semitism ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank the following: Mr Cedric Ginsberg, my supervisor, for his invaluable assistance, patience and meticulous corrections The late Mr Wally Levy for his information concerning families and events in the Northern Transvaal. Spring is now at hand and the military is beginning to show considerable signs of activity. Gen. Thayer has moved nearly all the troops out of the town, and is having the place thoroughly cleansed. He is also erecting suitable fortifications for the defense of the place by a small force, when the grand move on Texas is made, which nearly all the soldiers will hail with delight, as they look on the conquest of that State as virtually ending the war west of the Mississippi. There are about 900 men at this place who have taken the prescribed oath preparatory to voting next Monday. A great many of them are not of the purest water, but would turn every day to be at the top of the pile.

  • A Prisoner and Agent in 1944 Romania. a Fragment of the Memoirs of Pilot Officer Bertrand Whitley*
Philobiblon – Vol. XIX (2014) No. 2 © Philobiblon. Transylvanian Journal of Multidisciplinary Research in Humanities A Prisoner and Agent in 1944 Romania. A Fragment of the Memoirs of Pilot Officer Bertrand Whitley* Adrian BODA Researcher, Lucian Blaga Central University Library, Cluj-Napoca Keywords: War Memoirs, Prisoner, S.O.E. agent, Romania Abstract. The article presents a fragment from the manuscript of R.A.F pilot officer Bertrand Whitley, focusing on his experience as prisoner of war and S.O.E. agent in Romania. This part of the memoirs is especially relevant for Romanian readers, as it presents the conditions of 1944 Romania, perceived by an Englishman. The author’s experiences placed him in the position to know both rural Romania and the elite of Bucharest, as he witnessed the events of 23 August and the ensuing Soviet occupation. Apart from this, Whitley proved to be a fine observer of the period’s moral standards, as well as a good portrait writer: the manuscript contains portraits of personalities of the time, like King Mihai I of Romania or Major Ivor Porter. The soldiers’ experiences, whether in the trench wars of WWI or the horrors of the soldiers fighting in various theatres of operations in WWII, persisted in their memories, and not a few of them shared with society their individual perspectives on the war by volumes of memoirs. The evolution of mankind and the recurring military conflicts throughout its history place war narratives among the most frequent genres, as long as taking part in the war practically meant taking part in the making of history.1 As regards the production of war memoirs, the 20th century witnessed a boom in such writings, apparent both from the impressive number of such works published, and the broad typology of the genre.
