THE FAMISHED ROAD Ben Okri SECTION 1 BOOK 1 ONE IN THE BEGINNING there was a river. The river became a road and the road branched out to the whole world. And because the road was once a river it was always hungry. In that land of beginnings spirits mingled with the unborn. We could assume numerous forms. Many of us were birds. We knew no boundaries. There was much feasting, playing, and sorrowing. We feasted much because of the beautiful terrors of eternity. We played much because we were free. And we sorrowed much because there were always those amongst us who had just returned from the world of the Living. They had returned inconsolable for all the love they had left behind, all the suffering they hadn’t redeemed, all that they hadn’t understood, and for all that they had barely begun to learn before they were drawn back to the land of origins. There was not one amongst us who looked forward to being born. We disliked the rigours of existence, the unfulfilled longings, the enshrined injustices of the world, the labyrinths of love, the ignorance of parents, the fact of dying, and the amazing indifference of the Living in the midst of the simple beauties of the universe. We feared the heartlessness of human beings, all of whom are born blind, few of whom ever learn to see. Our king was a wonderful personage who sometimes appeared in the form of a great cat. He had a red beard and eyes of greenish sapphire. He had been born uncountable times and was a legend in all worlds, known by a hundred different names. -

May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

Rulers Against Writers, Writers Against Rulers: the Failed Promise of the Public Sphere in Postcolonial Nigerian Fiction
JOURNAL OF ENGLISH STUDIES - VOLUME 8 (2010), 73-102 RULERS AGAINST WRITERS, WRITERS AGAINST RULERS: THE FAILED PROMISE OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE IN POSTCOLONIAL NIGERIAN FICTION AYO KEHINDE* University of Ibadan ABSTRACT. Various literary critics have dwelt on the nature, tenets and trends of commitment in Nigerian literature. However, there is paucity of studies on the imaginative narration of the impediments facing the actualization of the public sphere in postcolonial Nigeria. This paper examines the strategies and techniques of representing the failed promise of the public sphere in postcolonial Nigerian fiction, using the examples provided by Chinua Achebe’s Anthills of the Savannah, Ben Okri’s The Famished Road and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus. The methodology involves a close reading of the selected texts, using Jurgen Habermas’ Public Sphere as analytical concept. In the selected novels, Nigeria is depicted as a country where the rulers disallow the existence of the ‘public sphere’, which is supposed to provide a liminal space among the private realms of civil society and the family, as well as the sphere of public authority. This is disclosed in the refusal of the characters, who typify the rulers, to disregard status altogether. The article considers a variety of methodologies for the study of literary prizes. Adnan Mahmutović, Ways of Being Free: Authenticity and Community in Selected Works of Rushdie, Ondaatje, and Okri (Rodopi, 2012) Adnan Mahmutović’s study Ways of Being Free: Authenticity and Community in Selected Works of Rushdie, Ondaatje, and Okri comes as book number 194 in Costerus New Series published by Amsterdam’s Rodopi. Mahmutović singles out Salman Rushdie, Michael Ondaatje, and Ben Okri as belonging to the generation of postcolonial writers ‘writing back to the imperial centre’, to quote Rushdie himself, who have a ‘strong connection to the former British empire’ (1). As the author explains in ‘Ways of Being Free: Introduction’, their writing back is doublefold: directed at both the political colonising centre and the margin they left behind, yet to whose ex-centric history they are still inextricably linked. In his detailed and comprehensive study Mahmutović chose to focus on three novels: Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children (1981), Okri’s The Famished Road (1991) and Ondaatje’s The English Patient (1993) – that is, the novels which, as products of this peculiar position of double writing back, brought the authors the prestigious Man Booker Prize in the 1980s and 1990s and thus served to underline a perhaps even more peculiar position of being well received in the Anglo-American centre, in the canon of the coloniser, while at the same time striving to ascertain their postcolonial identity. Mahmutović’s study is divided in two parts, each again preceded by an introduction. The first part, titled ‘War Is Everything’s Father: History and Death as Causes of Existential Angst’, analyses the chosen novels in two rounds of three essays each. -

Volume 6 Issue 2 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES AND September 2019 CULTURAL STUDIES ISSN 2356-5926 The Form and Function of the Fantastic in Ben Okri’s The Famished Road Trilogy Abdelkader Ben Rhit Faculty of Letters, Arts and Humanities Manouba, Tunisia Abstract This paper examines the elements of fantasy and folklore used as strategies for narrative construction in Ben Okri’s The Famished Road trilogy. It applies Todorov’s notion of the fantastic with its corollaries, fear, anxiety, and undecidability as well as William Bascom’s four functions of folklore to the trilogy. The paper also explores the healing processes the narratives enable despite their open nature and the undecidability surrounding them. Moreover, the paper offers an alternative reading of Okri’s The Famished Road trilogy by framing his choices of including a wide range of folklore whose thrust is the fantastic. It first reviews the major readings of the trilogy in the light of the concepts associated with magic realism, then it roots it in a tradition of literary works marked by the overall indeterminacy in plot arrangement where no closure is achieved. By availing himself of the imaginative powers of his Nigerian traditions, Ben Okri achieves two important goals: first, he fills in some disconcerting gaps generated by history; second, he produces narratives of colonial and post-independence histories which, apart from linking past and present traumatic experiences, disclose possibilities of healing wounds that are still open in Nigeria. More powerful than politics, more enduring than historiography, Okri’s selected novels form an instrument to fight oblivion and use transmitted values to envision a more hopeful future. -

See Gerald Moore’s Twelve African Writers for a similar but more nuanced argument. 2. In an interview with Jane Wilkinson, Okri refuses to acknowledge that Wole Soyinka or Amos Tutuola influenced him but readily cites the ancient Greeks as his literary forebears. He also claims similarities in the ‘worldviews’ of African and the ancient Greeks (see Wilkinson 87). 3. In Homo Sacer, Giorgio Agamben contests Benveniste’s interpretation. He believes that Benveniste has fallen for what he calls a ‘scientific mytholo- geme’; the theory of the ambivalence of the sacred (75). He does not, however, provide any evidence for his claims of its inaccuracy as a theory. He is more interested in proving that the Latin homo sacer – he who may be killed and yet not sacrificed – cannot be related to the religious category of the sacred, but instead ‘constitutes the first paradigm of the political realm of the West’ (8). 4. Henri Hubert and Marcel Mauss begin their essay Sacrifice: Its Nature and Function (1889) by pointing to the ‘ambiguous character of sacred things, which Robertson Smith has so admirably made clear’ (3). In 1915, Émile Durkheim, Mauss’s uncle, suggests that the ‘greatest service which Robertson Smith has rendered to the science of religions is to have pointed out the ambiguity of the notion of sacredness’ (409). Roberson Smith’s work proved crucial also to James Frazer’s argument on the evolution of society and his theory of magic, and to Freud’s Totem and Taboo. -

The Famished Road by Ben Okri Summary Spoiler Alert: The following summary and discussion questions reveal plot information that some readers may prefer to encounter as surprises. The Famished Road unfolds from the perspective of a unique young boy: Azaro's name derives from Lazaro, or the biblical Lazarus, due to his having been given up for dead and then recovering as a young child. He is an abiku, or spirit child, a creature from Yoruba mythology who exists between the spirit and human worlds. He sees things — visions, bizarre and often nightmarish creatures — that others cannot. The reader sees through his eyes, in which the "real" and fantastic worlds often intertwine. The novel follows the life of Azaro and his family. His parents, like so many of the working poor in Nigeria, struggle to make ends meet. Azaro explores the world around him, coming into contact with some of the adults in the community, including Madame Koto, the proprietor of the local bar, famous for her palm wine and peppersoup; and a local photographer who tries to document life in the village. Their stories unfold, always from Azaro's unique point of view. A political conflict finds its way to the village during an election, with both the Party of the Rich and the Party of the Poor vying for votes. Parisian divisions within the community lead to violence. The photographer, who documents a violent political demonstration, is severely beaten by one party's thugs. Madame Koto emerges as a local leader, gaining wealth and political clout even as she is accused of witchcraft. -
