He studied ichthyology at Cornell University and after graduating, spent a short time as an aid in the Division of Fishes, United States National Museum, in 1917. In 1922, he received an appointment with the Bureau of Fisheries and worked there until his retirement in 1956. Ginsburg's chief scientific interest was the marine fishes of the Gulf of Mexico. Though at one time he intended to prepare a large work on the shore fishes of the Gulf, necessary revisionary work on those groups took up most of his time. In addition, he worked on the problem of species and their subdivisions. Other duties at the Bureau of Fisheries included handling of the correspondence concerning marine fishes and war work in connection with the coordination of fisheries in 1943-1944. Introduction This finding aid was digitized with funds generously provided by the Smithsonian Institution Women's Committee. Descriptive Entry The papers of Isaac Ginsburg chiefly document his career with the Bureau of Fisheries from 1922 to 1956. There is extensive correspondence concerning the fishes of the Gulf coast, ichthyological nomenclature, and Ginsburg's war work, as well as Bureau of Fisheries affairs. This material includes notes and logs of William W. Welsh and Samuel Frederick Hildebrand on their investigations in New England and the Gulf of Mexico and photographs, probably of Hildebrand's work in Central America and the southern United States. ABSTRACT: Richard Deckert (born in Germany in 1878, immigrated to New York in 1887, died in Florida in 1971) was a polymath with great enthusiasm and wide ranging interests in natural history. His collections and publications did much to document the reptiles, amphibians, and land snails of Florida. His contributions to natural history illustration were equally important, as his carefully detailed line drawings and water colour paintings delineated the intricate details of snails, fishes, amphibians, and reptiles (particularly snakes and turtles), as well as fossil vertebrates, and were used in a wide range of systematic publications. Deckert also contributed to the modernization of fish taxidermy, leading to the current methods for creating lifelike fish mounts. This paper documents his scientific and artistic work. It was at A & M that I realized that the songs I most loved were called “folk songs” and that there was an extensive literature about them. I decided forthwith that the rest of my ;life would be devoted to these two activities--natural history and folk music. The singing got a boost when one of my fellow students, Rollins Colquitt, lent me his old guitar for the summer of 1935, with the understanding that over the summer I was to learn to play it, and teach him how the following school year.. Part of the deal worked out fine: I developed a very moderate proficiency on that useful instrument—but “Fish” Colquitt didn’t come back to A & M while I was there, and I kept that old guitar until it came to pieces several years later. With it, I performed whenever I could, and my first formal folk music concert came in the Spring of 1936, when Prof. J. Frank Dobie invited me to the University of Texas in Austin, to sing East Texas songs for the Texas Folklore Society.

The availability of a NASA translation service and assorted indices encouraged him to continue the series and distribute these items on an irregular schedule. The series continues under that tradition. Specifically, the SHIS series prints and distributes translations, bibliographies, indices, and similar items judged useful to individuals interested in the biology of amphibians and reptiles, and unlikely to be published in the normal technical journals. Emerson Papers consist of seven linear feet and cover the period 1917 to 1976. The papers contain correspondence, calendars, lecture notes, photographs, committee and foundation records, as well as articles and reprints. Alfred Emerson was a professor of zoology and a central figure in what became known as the "Chicago school" of ecology. He developed a model of biological evolution in which the social group, rather than the individaul organism, constitutes a superorganism that is the primary unit of natural selection. Much of his extensive research involved the study of termite physiological morphology and behavior. The medical significance of the majority of these snakes is unknown, but at least five species have caused life-threatening or fatal human envenomings. However, the venoms of only a small number of species have been explored. Methods A combined venomic and venom gland transcriptomic approach was employed to characterise of venom of Dispholidus typus (boomslang), the snake that caused the tragic death of Professor Karl Patterson Schmidt. The ability of CroFab™ antivenom to immunocapture boomslang venom proteins was investigated using antivenomics.
