McAllister Washington Department of FISH AND WILDLIFE Wildlife Program WDFW 759 The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife maintains a list of endangered, threatened and sensitive species (Washington Administrative Codes 232-12-014 and 232-12-011, Appendix I). In 1990, the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted listing procedures developed by a group of citizens, interest groups, and state and federal agencies (Washington Administrative Code 232-12-297, Appendix I). The procedures include how species listing will be initiated, criteria for listing and delisting, public review and recovery and management of listed species. The first step in the process is to develop a preliminary species status report. The report includes a review of information relevant to the species’ status in Washington and addresses factors affecting its status including, but not limited to: historic, current, and future species population trends, natural history including ecological relationships, historic and current habitat trends, population demographics and their relationship to long term sustainability, and historic and current species management activities. The procedures then provide for a 90-day public review opportunity for interested parties to submit new scientific data relevant to the draft status report and classification recommendation. During the 90-day review period, the Department held three public meetings to take comments and answer questions. The Department has now completed the final status report, listing recommendation and State Environmental Policy Act findings for presentation to the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission. -

Abstract: A comprehensive and up to date summary of the literature on the helminth parasites of lizards and amphisbaenians from South America is herein presented. One-hundred eighteen lizard species from twelve countries were reported in the literature harboring a total of 155 helminth species, being none acanthocephalans, 15 cestodes, 20 trematodes and 111 nematodes. Of these, one record was from Chile and French Guiana, three from Colombia, three from Uruguay, eight from Bolivia, nine from Surinam, 13 from Paraguay, 12 from Venezuela, 27 from Ecuador, 17 from Argentina, 39 from Peru and 103 from Brazil. The present list provides host, geographical distribution (with the respective biome, when possible), site of infection and references from the parasites. A systematic parasite-host list is also provided. Key words: Cestoda, Nematoda, Trematoda, Squamata, neotropical. Price1 and Daniel K. Young1 ABSTRACT The first comprehensive survey of Wisconsin Endomychidae was initiated in 1998. Throughout Wisconsin sampling sites were selected based on habitat type and sampling history. Wisconsin endomychids were hand collected from fungi and under tree bark; successful trapping methods included cantharidin- baited pitfall traps, flight intercept traps, and Lindgren funnel traps. Examina- tion of literature records, museum and private collections, and field research yielded 10 species, three of which are new state records. Two dubious records, Epipocus unicolor Horn and Stenotarsus hispidus (Herbst), could not be con- firmed. -

Balea perversa (L.), un escargot peu courant et en raréfaction Photo Pierre-Olivier COCHARD Description de l’espèce Balea perversa (LINNAEUS, 1758) est un escargot terrestre de taille modeste, 8 à 10 mm de long pour 2,2 mm de large (KERNEY & CAMERON, 1999). Il fait partie de la famille des Clausiliidae. Les Clausiliidae se reconnaissent à leurs coquilles beaucoup plus longues que larges, généralement fusiformes, et leur enroulement sénestre (enroulement vers la gauche), phénomène très peu courant chez les mollusques. Cette famille est très diversifiée dans l’Est de l’Europe, les zones de montagnes en France, et n’est plus représentée dans l’Ouest de la France que par quelques espèces. En Normandie, environ 5 espèces sont actuellement connues, une ou deux autres signalées Photo Pierre-Olivier COCHARD Contrefort de Torigni 48 L’Argiope n°50 anciennement. La détermination du genre Clausilia, le genre le plus distribué dans la région, est un véritable casse-tête. Si tous les autres Clausiliidae de la Manche ont une coquille fusiforme, qui a son tour le plus large un peu au-dessous du milieu, B. perversa est une exception. Sa coquille est étroitement conique (sa partie la plus large se situe à la base). Autres exceptions, l’ouverture (la « bouche ») est sans dents (les Clausilia et Macrogastra en ont plusieurs), l’intérieur de la coquille ne présente pas de clausilium, sorte de lame calcaire en forme de cuillière. Enfin précision importante : l’épithète spécifique ne sous-entend rien d’autre de pervers chez cette espèce, que sa particularité inhabituelle d’être enroulée vers la gauche. -

Rickettsiae (185) are obligate intracellular parasites that multiply by binary fission in the cells of both vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. They are pleomorphic coccobacillary bodies with complex cell walls containing muramic acid, and internal structures composed of ribonucleic and deoxyri bonucleic acids. Rickettsiae show independent metabolic activity with amino acids and intermediate carbohydrates as substrates, and are very susceptible to tetracyclines as well as to other antibiotics. They may be considered as fastidious bacteria whose major unique character is their obligate intracellu lar life, although there is at least one exception to this. In appearance, they range from coccoid forms 0.3 J.I. in diameter to long chains of bacillary forms. They are thus intermediate in size between most bacteria and filterable viruses, and form the family Rickettsiaceae Pinkerton. They stain poorly by Gram's method but well by the procedures of Macchiavello, Gimenez, and Giemsa. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new genus and species of handsome fungus beetle, Glesirhanis bercioi gen. nov., sp. nov. (Coleoptera: Endomychidae: Leiestinae) is described from Baltic amber. The newly described genus is compared with all known extant and extinct genera of the subfamily. A key to the genera of Leiestinae including fossils and a checklist of fossil Endomychidae are provided. The status of two taxa previously placed in Endomychidae, Palaeoendomychus gymnus Zhang and Tetrameropsis mesozoica Kirejtshuk & Azar, is discussed, and a new status for the latter, elevating it to the family-level as Tetrameropseidae status nov., is proposed. Abstract: Peru is an ecologically diverse country, with 84 life zones in the Holdridge system and 18 ecological regions (including two marine). 1910 molluscan species have been recorded. The highest number corresponds to the sea: 570 gastropods, 370 bivalves, 36 cephalopods, 34 polyplacoforans, 3 monoplacophorans, 3 scaphopods and 2 aplacophorans (total 1018 species). The most diverse families are Veneridae (57spp.), Muricidae (47spp.), Collumbellidae (40 spp.) and Tellinidae (37 spp.). Biogeographically, 56 % of marine species are Panamic, 11 % Peruvian and the rest occurs in both provinces; 73 marine species are endemic to Peru. Land molluscs include 763 species, 2.54 % of the global estimate and 38 % of the South American esti- mate. The most biodiverse families are Bulimulidae with 424 spp., Clausiliidae with 75 spp. and Systrophiidae with 55 spp. In contrast, only 129 freshwater species have been reported, 35 endemics (mainly hydrobiids with 14 spp. The paper includes an overview of biogeography, ecology, use, history of research efforts and conser- vation; as well as indication of areas and species that are in greater need of study. -

The new taxon is characterised by having thick and cylindrical apical whorls, a strongly expanded lamella inferior and a lamella subcolumellaris that together form a tubular structure at the base of the peristome, and a dorsal lunella connected to both the upper and the lower palatal plicae. HOOPER Because type specimens (holotypes, syntypes, lectotypes and neotypes) are the property of science, institutions which maintain them have special obligations to insure their safety and permanence and to make available essential information about them. Publishing a list is one way to make that information available. It is a procedure recommended by national and international organizations concerned with systematic collections, for exam- ple by the American Society of Marnmalogists' Committee for Systematic Resources, 1974, and by the Association of Systematic Collections. The International Council of Museums also, in its efforts to draw forth informa- tion on types, considered preparing a universal catalogue of type specimens in zoology and paleontology. Though the objective was not achieved, the Council, in 1968, did produce "A preliminary list of catalogues of type specimens in zoology and paleontology" authored by A. W. Frank Banfield. This publication cites, for Recent Mammalia, catalogues of specimens in 12 Museums. Additional lists have been published (e. g., Jones and Genoways, Misc. Publ. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kans., 51: 129-146, 1969; Schlitter, J. Mamm., 55: 264-266, 1974). The present writing is the first report on the mammalian types contained in The University of Michigan Museum of Zoology. LIST OF TYPES Listed below are the 118 holotypes and two neotypes contained in the collection. They are arranged under the names by which they were originally described and, when appropriate, are cross-listed to accord with current usage.
