Under the so called Perak Amanjaya Development Plan, some of the things that we have tried to do are the same things that I believe many others here are concerned about: first, balanced development and economic distribution between the urban and rural areas by focusing on developing small towns; second, poverty eradication regardless of race or religion so that no one remains on the fringes of society or is left behind economically; and, third, youth empowerment. Under the first one, the state identifies viable small- and medium-size companies which can operate from small towns. These companies are to be working closely with the state government to boost the economy of the respective areas.

Assessing the Rural Cultural Significances ASSESSING THE RURAL CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE FOR HERITAGE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN PERAK TENGAH DISTRICT Siti Norlizaiha Harun1, Mohd Roswodi Mat Zin2 Faculty of Architecture Planning and Surveying, Universiti Teknologi Mara Perak Branch [email protected] Received: 15 February 2018 Accepted: 25 April 2018 Published: 30 Sept 2018 ABSTRACT The cultural heritage resources are widely available in the rural area in the form of a unique culture and art, heritage, traditional knowledge, natural beauty, ecological resources and others, and are representative of the community culture. Heritage interpretation is an educational process that aims to reveal meanings about our culture. Good interpretation enhances our understanding, appreciation, and therefore, provides protection of cultural heritage. This research has two aims; 1) to identify the cultural heritage significance; 2) to designate interpretation plan of the potential cultural heritage for new tourist attraction in the state of Perak. The method of this research involved three steps; inventory of resources, focus group survey and interpretation proposal. Results from focus group indicate the need to customize the interpretation and presentation of rural heritage especially on physical experience in community cultural activities. This study also highlights the most significance cultural resources in Perak Tengah Districts based on ranking. The output of this research is to produce the interpretation guidance for heritage site operators on how visitors can experience our cultural heritage in the rural area. © 2018MySE, FSPU, UiTM Perak, All rights reserved Keywords:Cultural, Heritage, Interpretation, Rural, Visitor 37 Malaysian Journal of Sustainable Environment INTRODUCTION The rural area has a lot of cultural heritage resources in the form of unique culture and art, traditional knowledge, natural beauty and others.

I first embarked on my research on Malay literature, history and Southeast Asian studies not knowing what to focus on, given the enormous corpus of available literature on the region. Two years into my graduate studies, my graduate advisor, a dear friend and conversation partner, an expert on hikayats, Hendrik Maier brought Misa Melayu, one of the lesser read hikayat to my attention, suggesting that I read it, and write about it. If it was not for his recommendation, this dissertation would not have been written, and for that, and countless other reasons, I thank him kindly. I would like to thank the rest of my graduate committee, and fellow Southeast Asianists Mariam Lam and Tamara Ho, whose friendship, advice, support and guidance have been indispensable. Also, Muhamad Ali and Justin McDaniel, whose graduate courses have cultivated my interest in Southeast Asia beyond the literary into appreciating the religious complexity and diversity of the region.

Regular Guest lecturer: Management and Business, IPB (Bogor Agricultural University) E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Perak is one of the 13 states of Malaysia. It is the second largest state in Peninsular Malaysia. There are 136 destinations on Perak, but based on sustainable tourism concept, there are only less than 15 % destinations were sustained, and most of them were un-sustained. So, based on techno-centrism’s philosophy, we try to develop new prospective sustainable tourism for the balance destinations. It not only could improve local economic growth, but also could improve the quality of destination’s environment and strengthen the regional tourism institution in improving their performance on serving local communities. Furthermore, to fulfill the aim of the research by using techno-centrism’s philosophy, and content analysis to tabulate the research which was conducted for 3 months, we tried to develop new prospective destination by finding the way out how to improve the amount of destination down Perak areas. Keywords: techno-centrism; sustainable tourism; Perak; and Malaysia. INTRODUCTION Perak State Government considered making a firm decision to be restructured around agriculture, manufacturing, construction, trade and commerce.
