As a form of literacy, graffiti has existed throughout the ages. Many researches on epigraphy show that many examples of graffiti were left in- tact from the period of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. However, the purpose of their appearance was merely disputed in the scientific community. The main aim of this research is to ascertain the motives of the habits of inscribing graffiti among Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealths citizens. This study is a qualitative research that seeks an in-depth understanding of the phenomena of writing graffiti. Basic material for the research was gathered from ego-documents that are focused on the personal lives and experiences of the writers. The research is based on a detailed contextual analysis of several cases (case study method). This article examines several cases and gives some light on how and why graffiti were made. Jan Chryzostom Pasek (* around 1636 in Węgrzynowice , † 1701 in Niedzieliszki near Szczurowa ) was a Polish nobleman and writer . His memoirs are a valuable historical source of the Polish Baroque , Sarmatism and the customs of Poland-Lithuania in the 17th century. Pasek came from a small noble family from Rawa Mazowiecka , attended a Jesuit school and joined the Polish Crown Army at 19 . He served under Hetman Stefan Czarniecki and took part in numerous campaigns against Sweden , Denmark , Russia and Turkey . Towards the end of his life he wrote an autobiographical diary , a copy of which was found in the 18th century and made him famous posthumously . Jan Chryzostom Pasek. Jan Chryzostom Pasek (c. 1636–1701) was a Polish nobleman and writer during the times of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. He is best remembered for his memoirs ( Pamiętniki ), which are a valuable historical source about Baroque sarmatian culture and events in the Commonwealth. [1] Born in Węgrzynowice (now in Tomaszów Mazowiecki County) in 1636, [2] into a petty noble family, Pasek attended a Jesuit school.

    journal of jesuit studies 5 (2018) 441-455 brill.com/jjs Jesuit Education in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1565–1773) Jakub Niedźwiedź Jagiellonian University, Cracow [email protected] Abstract This article examines the impact of the Jesuit educational system on the culture of the multi-religious and multi-ethnic federation, through four problems. The first part of the paper presents the beginnings and development of the educational network and the Jesuit monopoly of education in the country. In the second part, it is shown how the Ratio studiorum was adapted to local conditions and how Latin culture was promoted in the Orthodox provinces of eastern Poland and Lithuania. One of the major consequences of these processes was the unification of a literary language and literature in Polish (Polish became the second language of Latinitas). The third part raises the question of the impact of rhetorical studies on political activity of the gen- try, through the formation of the citizen-orator ideal. The development of literature, theatre, music, and the sciences forms the subject of the fourth part, which also lists the main achievements of Jesuit scholars and alumni. In conclusion, some observa- tions are offered on the specific nature of Jesuit education in this part of Europe and its legacy after the dissolution of the Society of Jesus. Believing that Pasek was relaying secret letters from a confederation (zwiqzek) formed in Kielce by soldiers demanding back pay to supporters in Belorussia, Mazepa quickly rode to the king in Hrodna (Grodno) and mistakenly informed on the unsuspecting Pasek.

Kamiński, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Historians of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth have traditionally presented the liberum veto, a parliamentary practice that allowed any member of parliament to object to any measure and thereby suspend deliberations, as a result of Polish citizens’ (the szlachta’s) peculiar political culture, particularly their attachment to the principles of consensus and unanimity. This assumption led scholars to focus on theoretical justifications for the abuse of the veto that began during the second half of the seventeenth century and by the middle of the eighteenth century had paralyzed the Polish parliament (the Sejm) entirely. Until now, no one has considered the advent and persistence of the veto in the context of the long struggle between the two central political ideologies of the early modern period, republicanism and absolutism. By examining the writings of republican citizens who used and defended the veto during the heated battle over constitutional reform waged in the Commonwealth during the 1660s and early 1670s, we see that the veto was initially embraced as a tool to defend republican liberty against the illegal designs of a king bent on monarchical reforms.
