    Duplicity: Exploring the many faces of Gotham “And man shall be just that for the overman: a laughing stock or a painful embarrassment.” - Friedrich Nietzsche, Also Sprach Zarathustra The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan’s follow up to 2005’s convention- busting Batman Begins, has just broken the earlier box office record set by Spiderman 3 with a massive opening weekend haul of $158 million. While the figures say much about this franchise’s impact on the popular imagination, critical reception has also been in a rare instance overwhelmingly concurrent. What is even more telling is that the old and new opening records were both set by superhero movies. Much has already been discussed in the media about the late Heath Ledger’s brave performance and how The Dark Knight is a gritty new template for all future comic-to-movie adaptations, so we won’t go into much more of that here. Instead, let’s take a hard and fast look at absolutes and motives: old, new, black, white and a few in between. The brutality of The Dark Knight is also the brutality of America post-9/11: the inevitable conflict of idealism and reality, a frustrating political comedy of errors, and a rueful Wodehouseian reconciliation of the improbable with the impossible. Even as the film’s convoluted and always engaging plot breaks down some preconceptions about the psychology of the powerful, others are renewed (at times without logical basis) – that politicians are corruptible, that heroes are intrinsically flawed, that what you cannot readily comprehend is evil incarnate – and it isn’t always clear if this is an attempt at subtle irony or a weary concession to formula.

Es ist nur so, dass das Mainstream-Kino den Kaperversuch durch die Kunst ziemlich fundamental abgeschlagen hat. Jetzt den Filmen von David Lynch noch einmal wieder zu begegnen, ist ein Glücksfall. Danach muss man sich zum Fernsehapparat oder ins Museum bemühen. (Und grimmig die Propaganda des Künstlers für den Unfug transzendentaler Meditation herunterschlucken; »nobody is perfect.«) Was also ist das Besondere an David Lynch? Seine Arbeit geschah und geschieht nach den »Spielregeln der Kunst«, die bekanntlich in ihrer eigenen Schöpfung und zugleich in ihrem eigenen Bruch bestehen. Man er- kennt einen David-Lynch-Film auf Anhieb, aber niemals David Lynch hat David Lynch einen »David-Lynch-Film« gedreht. Be- 21 stimmte Motive (sagen wir: Stehlampen, Hotelflure, die Farbe Rot, Hauchgesänge von Frauen, das industrielle Rauschen, visuelle Americana), bestimmte Figuren (die Frau im Mehrfachleben, der Kobold, Kyle MacLachlan als Stellvertreter in einer magischen Biographie - weni- ger, was ein Leben als vielmehr, was das Suchen und Was ist das Besondere an David Lynch? Abgesehen Erkennen anbelangt, Väter und Polizisten), bestimmte davon, dass er ein paar veritable Kultfilme geschaffen Plot-Fragmente (die nie auflösbare Intrige, die Suche hat, Filme, wie ERASERHEAD, BLUE VELVET oder die als Sturz in den Abgrund, die Verbindung von Gewalt TV-Serie TWIN PEAKS, die aus merkwürdigen Gründen und Design) kehren in wechselnden Kompositionen (denn im klassischen Sinn zu »verstehen« hat sie ja nie wieder, ganz zu schweigen von Techniken wie dem jemand gewagt) die genau richtigen Bilder zur genau nicht-linearen Erzählen, dem Eindringen in die ver- richtigen Zeit zu den genau richtigen Menschen brach- borgenen Innenwelten von Milieus und Menschen, der ten, und abgesehen davon, dass er in einer bestimmten Grenzüberschreitung von Traum und Realität.

It is argued here that dystopian fiction such as The Walking Dead offers an opportunity for a popular criminology to address what criminologists have described as our discipline’s aetiological crisis in theorizing harmful and violent subjectivities. The social relations, conditions and subjectivities displayed in dystopian fiction are in fact an exacerbation or extrapolation of our present norms, values and subjectivities, rather than a departure from them, and there are numerous real-world criminological parallels depicted within The Walking Dead’s postapocalyptic world. As such, the show possesses a hard kernel of Truth that is of significant utility in progressing criminological theories of violence and harmful subjectivity. The article therefore explores the ideological function of dystopian fiction as the fetishistic disavowal of the dark underbelly of liberal capitalism; and views the show as an example of the ultra-realist concepts of special liberty, the criminal undertaker and the pseudopacification process in action. In drawing on these cutting- edge criminological theories, it is argued that we can use criminological analyses of popular culture to provide incisive insights into the real-world relationship between violence and capitalism, and its proliferation of harmful subjectivities.
