OUR OPINION Look at all options for new admin building e pay careful attention when some gov- ernment agency starts talking about W spending millions for the benefit of the taxpayers it serves. When that agency wants to borrow as much as $8 million for the effort, we take an even closer look. County government says it’s running out of room for current operations, and that the ever-ex- panding circuit court system needs more space as well. The Chamber of Commerce and Busy Bee B&B are bringing the people of Lake City what every Floridian dreams of in the winter: snow. Lake City’s annual Snow Day is back again this year and will transform downtown Lake City into a winter wonderland from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. “It’s one of the biggest events that downtown Lake City puts on,” chamber executive director Dennille Decker said. Snow Day will feature 30 Decker tons of snow, including two snow slides and two snow piles. For many of the children in Lake City, this will be their first time seeing snow. Decker says that many children get excit- ed to play in the snow before they realize that it’s cold and wet. WE DELIVER! “That’s the most hilarious part,” Decker said. GAINESVILLE — As more than 500 people gathered Nov. 29 at the UF/IFAS Citrus Research and Education Center to cele- brate the facility’s 100-year anni- versary, they commemorated many longstanding partnerships between UF/IFAS and citrus growers. They also learned about future solutions that will help produce top-notch fruit and juice. Among the speakers were W. Kent Fuchs, UF president; Jack Payne, UF senior vice pres- ident for agriculture and natural resources; and Michael Rogers, director of the UF/IFAS Citrus REC in Lake Alfred. Rogers emphasized the many relationships between UF/IFAS research and extension faculty and the citrus industry, adding that most major discoveries require grower participation. Scott looks to replenish job funding

By JIM TURNER The News Service of Florida

JACKSONVILLE — Gov. Rick Scott has yet to dip into the $85 million lawmakers set aside this year to attract new businesses to Florida, but he’s already seeking to replenish the pool of money. Scott told the Enterprise Florida Board of Directors, meeting this week in Jacksonville, of the need to ensure lawmakers main- tain the new “Florida Job Growth Grant Fund,” which has attracted 209 applica- tions from governments and other groups across the state since opening in July. However, Scott and his office haven’t indicat- ed when money could be awarded to the first regional or workforce project. “I have no interest in doing any deals unless we get a very good return on invest- ment,” Scott said. “When I was in business, I had a fidu- ciary to my employees, to the shareholders. In this, I have an absolute fiduciary to the taxpayers of the state to make sure all those dollars we get a very good return on investment.” Scott’s request to replen- ish the fund with another $85 million is part of his $87.4 billion budget propos- al for the 2018 legislative session. The various applicants this year have collectively requested $713.4 million to help with projects with an estimated cost of $1.5 bil- lion. The proposals range from $2,580 sought on Oct. 4 by Film Florida — for an industry training event that occurred Oct 21 — to $25 million requested by Pasco County for a $62.1 million Interstate 75 and Overpass Road interchange project. The fund was created during a June special leg- islative session as a com- promise between Scott and House leaders. The House had earlier sought to elim- inate the business-recruit- ment agency Enterprise Florida and other programs. After the fund was creat- ed, several Democrats derid- ed the money as a “slush fund” that needed more oversight. Enterprise Florida and the state Department of Economic Opportunity are reviewing the proposals. House leaders were heavily focused on ending programs that awarded eco- nomic incentives to single companies in return for relo- cating to Florida or expand- ing in the state. House Speaker Richard Corcoran, R-Land O’ Lakes, repeatedly called such incentives “cor- porate welfare.” 6C LAKE CITY REPORTER BUSINESS WEEK OF SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3 9, 2017 SNOW Continued From 1C delivered around 4:30 a.m. on Snow Day, and the next four hours are spent blow- ing snow to create 30 tons worth. “If you can envision a big truck that’s a giant snow cone maker, that’s kind of the process,” Decker said.
