About ALA Letter to the Membership

Mission & History In 2008–2009, libraries revealed the many ways they serve as first responders in times of economic crisis, providing critical services and resources to those in need. Even as libraries themselves faced budget cuts, layoffs, and closures, the use of their invaluable services ALA & LIS Acronyms surged, and libraries looked for new and creative ways to serve their communities. ALA Governing & Strategic Documents Grassroots support for libraries seemed to grow with the increase in usage. In a noteworthy case, the New York Public Library successfully used an online fundraising campaign to win back $23 million in subsidies after the city initially planned to cut its support by Constitution & Bylaws $28 million. The advocacy campaign—which spread its message through the library’s website, Facebook, and other social networking Council sites, and a YouTube video featuring celebrities such as writer Amy Tan and actor Jeff Daniels—brought in $50,000 and calls to city Officers & Executive Board representatives from some 30,000 residents. Handbook of Organization In February, citizen support for libraries received a boost as the Association for Library Trustees and Advocates and Friends of Libraries Legal Guidelines U.S.A. officially joined forces to become the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations. This new ALA division Annual Report will help trustees and Friends work together at the local, state, and national levels to effectively promote and advocate for libraries so that libraries may thrive even in times of economic distress. Past Annual Reports Letter to the Membership ALA’s new @ your library website, which was launched during National Library Week in April 2009, further promotes the message that About ALA libraries are a valuable community resource. A two-year pilot project targeting families/children/teens and underserved populations such 2008-2009 Year in Review as recent immigrants and job seekers, the site offers information on topics of general interest to the public and uses interactive Awards and Honors technology and social networking to stimulate library usage and to raise awareness of all types of libraries—public, school, academic, and Conferences and Workshops special. Financials The explosion in the use of social networking sites, blogs, wikis, and digital content continued at ALA and in the library world, with Twitter In Appreciation at the top of the list of new ways to connect with members and patrons. ALA also offered Association-wide improvements, with a Leadership redesigned website launched in September 2008 and ALA Connect—which provides a virtual, collaborative space where members can Other Highlights engage in the Association’s work—launched in the spring. Programs and Partners 2008–2009 ALA President James Rettig focused his presidential activities around “Creating Connections” and addressed three critical Publishing issues: advocacy, diversity, and member participation. Rettig, university librarian at the University of Richmond in Virginia, provided a Washington Office variety of innovative opportunities for members to participate in ALA activities throughout his presidential year, including monthly online Financial Data salons, virtual poster sessions, and the chance to ask questions of the next year’s ALA presidential candidates via YouTube. Other ALA Election Information projects included the development of a “Craigslist” of opportunities intended to help members find their place in our complex, vibrant, and Policy Manual opportunity-rich Association, and a Career Connections member community in ALA Connect, where members can submit their resumes for others to review. Offices Rettig organized a panel discussion at the 2009 Midwinter Meeting titled “Building Statewide Coalitions for All Libraries During a Tough Contact Us Economy,” which focused on the value of advocacy coalitions in times of economic downturn, and his President’s Program featured Dr. Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner and author, who discussed how institutions such as libraries can transform and build communities that they serve. At the 2009 Annual Conference, 75 members participated an “unconference,” where participants could set their own agenda, and Rettig’s President’s Program featured Thomas S. Blanton, director of the National Security Archive at George Washington University, who spoke on the loss of access to government information.

In the coming year, we must call on the library community to do what it does best: to educate and inform and to disseminate the knowledge that the library is an indispensable institution, greatly in need of support. It is not enough to focus only on providing the vital services we offer. We must advocate for the value of our libraries by providing the resources, tools, and training that allow librarians and library supporters to better articulate what we already know is true—that libraries are the heart of all communities.

Key initiatives will address advocacy and literacy. A focus on “member-driven advocacy” content and training—for librarians, library staff, and supporters of all types of libraries—complements ALA’s existing efforts targeting local, state, and federal legislative advocacy. This front-line advocacy features a most critical emphasis on the competencies and content needed to advocate for the library and library needs within the library structure and within our respective communities—cities, counties, higher education environments, and schools/school districts. We will work to bring national attention to libraries and their role as literacy builders, engage library leaders everywhere to focus on current literacy best practices in building community, and develop programs that incorporate literacy partners to build a comprehensive advocacy for literacy movement.

The ALA has approximately 63,000 members, including not only Handbook of Organization librarians but also library trustees, publishers, and other interested people from every state and many nations. Mission & History 2008–2009 ALA President James Rettig focused his presidential activities around “Creating Connections” and addressed three ALA & LIS Acronyms critical issues: advocacy, diversity, and member participation. Policy Manual Offices ALA responds to economic crisis Contact Us The fiscal year began with widespread media coverage of the increase in library usage during tough economic times. The Public Information Office facilitated interview opportunities for members and ALA leaders with National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” NBC’s Today Show and Nightly News, the CBS Evening News, CNN, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, the Associated Press, and dozens of other media groups and news websites.

Coverage positioned libraries as trusted and valuable community resources and focused on how libraries assist job-seekers and help families save money, as well as how they are changing to meet the demands of the communities they serve.

The demand for information on how libraries support communities during times of economic hardship was so great that the PIO created an economy press kit, which can be viewed at http://www.ala.org/economynews. Libraries across the country posted television clips to their websites and used the coverage as a tool to fuel local advocacy efforts.

Through difficult economic times, people continued to join ALA and renew their memberships in order to support the profession and find the resources they need for their work life. The Association closed the 2009 fiscal year with 64,843 members, a 2.6% percent decrease from the record 66,624 members in FY2008. No particular area of personal membership was down significantly, however, and student and retiree memberships saw modest increases. Organizational and corporate memberships dropped slightly, with 3,295 and 240 members, respectively. FY 2009 was the final year of a three-year phased-in dues increase for personal members and also saw a change in the dues structure for corporate members.

The first ALA Editions Special Report addressed the economy’s impact on jobs: Crisis in Employment, by Jane Jerrard, with a foreword by Office for Research and Statistics Director Denise Davis, offers advice and methods for providing appropriate training and education to job seekers. The report, which was also made available in electronic format at a lower price, was published rapidly to ensure timely advice, with content based on interviews with librarians across the country, as well as on research from the ORS.

In the January 2009 issue of Library Technology Reports, “The State of Funding for Library Technology in Today’s Economy,” Davis and ORS Project Manager Larra Clark responded to the economic crisis with a detailed look at the library-funding landscape. The report, which grew out of the Libraries Connect Communities Public Library Funding and Technology Access Study, includes contributions from experts such as blogger Jason Griffey and former Colorado State Librarian Nancy Bolt and provides practical guidelines for stretching a library’s budget as far as it

can go.

The Office of Chapter and International Relations supported state library associations as they battled efforts to cut state funding to libraries just when their services—for workshops on financial planning and investment, technology training, access to valuable databases, free access to computers—were most needed. More than 75,000 library supporters nationwide sent messages directly to their governors and legislators. These efforts helped to stave off or reduce catastrophic cuts in Ohio, Florida, and New Jersey.

The Reference and User Services Association worked with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation to develop a new resource for libraries to help people cope with tough economic times through the Smart investing @ your library program. FINRA’s Investor Alert brochure “Job Dislocation: Making Smart Financial Choices after a Job Loss” offers guidance and tips for the general public on maintaining financial stability during a period of unemployment. Topics covered include taking the right financial steps, protecting against investment fraud, understanding health insurance options, and asking appropriate questions about employer benefit plans.

Recession, White House transition bring opportunities to highlight library services

The Washington Office responded to the recession by taking action to inform decision-makers—including newly elected President Obama —of the myriad ways in which the nation’s libraries serve as first responders in times of economic crisis.

For the House Banking Committee, which was considering an emergency supplemental bill, the Washington Office prepared a proposal focused on a one-year investment of federal support to public libraries to stay open nights and weekends so that the public could use library resources to look for work.

After the election, the Washington Office worked with the Obama transition team, sharing proposals for libraries to help patrons looking for employment and engaging in discussions about national licenses for databases. Also under discussions was a national effort to include two years of supplemental funding for public and community college libraries to stay open when the public needs access to library resources. The Washington Office also suggested a program to put a state-certified school librarian in each K–12 school, which would have funded 60,000 new school librarians.

In addition to economy-related issues, the report “Opening the ‘Window to a Larger World’: Libraries’ Role in Changing America,” submitted by ALA President Jim Rettig to President Obama’s transition team, outlined top ALA issues and concerns. The Open Access Working Group, which includes the Association of College and Research Libraries, ALA, and eight other library and public-interest groups, also sent a report, “Public Access to the Published Results of Publicly Funded Research Will Benefit the Economy, Science, and Health.”

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed into law by President Obama in February 2009, did not fully maximize libraries as a resource for recovery. However, it did present unprecedented opportunities for libraries to pursue federal funding, particularly for broadband build-out. In June 2009, the Washington Office created the online guide Know Your Stimulus to help encourage ALA members to take full advantage of the possibilities in the bill.

Profession says good-bye to leaders Krug and Josey

The library world lost two important leaders in 2008–2009: Office for Intellectual Freedom Director Judith Krug and ALA Past-President E.J. Josey.

Director of the OIF and executive director of the Freedom to Read Foundation for more than 40 years, Judith Krug died April 11, 2009, at age 69. Krug, who often said, “Censorship dies in the light of day,” was admired and respected for her efforts to guarantee the rights of individuals to express ideas and read the ideas of others without governmental interference.

Through her unwavering support of writers, teachers, librarians, and students, Krug advised countless librarians and trustees in dealing with challenges to library material. She was involved in multiple First Amendment cases that went to the United States Supreme Court. In addition, she was the founder of Banned Books Week, an annual weeklong event that celebrates the freedom to choose and the freedom to express one’s opinion.

At the 2009 ALA Annual Conference, Krug was honored with tributes from every ALA state chapter and the ALA Council, the William J. Brennan Award from the Thomas Jefferson Center, and the Freedom to Read Foundation’s Founder’s Award, and with Honorary Membership in ALA. Honorary membership is the profession’s highest honor and normally is not awarded posthumously—just one more indication of how exceptionally important Krug was to the field of librarianship.

Authors Scott Turow and Judy Blume helped celebrate Krug’s life and legacy, speaking to a packed house of more than 500 at the FTRF’s 40th Anniversary Gala at the new Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago July 12. Krug’s death also brought countless tributes from her friends and colleagues, many of which can be found on the FTRF’s Web pages. Her remarkable life and legacy were memorialized by the New York Times, CBS News, National Public Radio, the Huffington Post, the Chicago Tribune, Library Journal, and scores of other newspapers, blogs, and magazines. The May 2009 issue of American Libraries offered a retrospective (in photos as well as words) of Krug’s life and work, AL Focus included a memorial video, and the July issue of the Newsletter on Intellectual Freedom was dedicated to remembering Krug’s career.

Krug began her library career as a reference librarian at Chicago’s John Crerar Library in 1962. Later, she was hired as a cataloger at Northwestern University’s dental school library, working there from 1963 to 1965. She joined ALA as a research analyst in 1965 and assumed the post of OIF director in 1967, also taking over the duties of executive director of the Freedom to Read Foundation.

On July 3, 2009, the library world also said good-bye to E.J. Josey, professor emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh and past president of ALA (1984–1985), who died at age 85.

In 1964, Josey authored an ALA resolution forbidding ALA officers and staff from participating in state associations that denied membership to black librarians. This action led to the integration of the library associations of several Southern states, and Josey became the first black librarian to be accepted as a member of the Georgia Library Association.

ALTAFF unites voices of ALTA, FOLUSA

Citizen support for libraries received a boost on February 1, 2009, when the Association for Library Trustees and Advocates (ALTA) and Friends of Libraries U.S.A. (FOLUSA) officially joined forces to become the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF). This new division will help trustees and Friends work together at the local, state, and national levels to promote and advocate for libraries. The ultimate goal is to harness the power of hundreds of thousands of library advocates so that libraries will thrive even in times of economic distress.

New @ your library website debuts

In a cooperative effort between Publishing and Communications and Member Relations, ALA did a soft launch of the @ your library website for the public during National Library Week in April 2009. The new website is a two-year pilot project funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York and targeting families/children/teens and underserved populations such as recent immigrants and job-seekers. The site offers information on topics of general interest to the public and uses interactive technology and social networking to stimulate library usage and raise public awareness of the library—public, school, academic, and special—as a valuable community resource. The new site is designed to work in tandem with the I Love Libraries website maintained by the Office for Library Advocacy. AL Editor-in-Chief Leonard Kniffel managed the project with Public Programs Office Director Deb Robertson.

ALA launches redesigned website, ALA Connect

ALA continued to work on improving ways to disseminate information and to provide opportunities for networking online. On September 22, 2008, ALA launched a redesigned website with restructured information architecture. Focus groups at the Midwinter Meeting provided positive feedback about the design’s features and requested that more attention be paid to search functions and link maintenance. Later in the fiscal year, ALA introduced ALA Connect, which replaced the Online Communities service as a virtual, collaborative, online workspace.

A busy year for the Campaign for America’s Libraries

The Campaign for America’s Libraries continued to work with partners to generate public awareness about the value of libraries and librarians, to reach new audiences, and to amplify messages.

The American Dream Starts @ your library grant, developed by ALA and funded through Campaign partner Dollar General Literacy Foundation, awarded funding to 34 public libraries to add or expand literacy services for adult English-language learners.

Using the Campaign for America’s Libraries @ your library brand, Verizon’s Thinkfinity.org featured librarian-specific content from ALA and library initiatives in a collection of resources specifically for school library media specialists. The Thinkfinity @ your library page showcases materials collected from Thinkfinity content partners and includes discipline-specific, standards-based educational resources on current subject areas. It also highlights events such as Youth Media Month, School Library Media Month, and El día de los niños, El día los libros.

The fourth season of the Step Up to the Plate @ your library program, developed by ALA and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, kicked off during Youth Baseball Week April 13–19, 2009, and was a featured program during the week’s celebration at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The program once again centered on a baseball trivia contest, with this year’s questions, developed by the library staff at the Hall of Fame, focusing on multiculturalism in baseball and baseball around the world. Launched in September 2008 at the national conference of REFORMA (The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking), the “en tu biblioteca” campaign was developed to encourage members of the Latino community to use their local libraries. Univision Radio, the nation’s largest Spanish-language radio broadcaster, aired public service announcements in 13 of the country’s top Latino markets in the fall and spring, with a combined value of $1 million in donated air time.

Continuing an eight-year partnership with the Campaign for America’s Libraries, Woman’s Day magazine featured the four winners of its latest library initiative, which asked readers how they used the library to improve a family member’s or their own emotional, mental, or physical health. Winners included a woman who found solace in the library when her husband was ill, one who used the resources at her library to learn about her postpartum depression, a woman who was able to make an informed health choice thanks to the research training offered at her library, and a reader who, after losing her eyesight, used books on tape provided by the Library of Congress to rediscover her love of reading. The magazine also announced its next initiative, asking women to submit stories of how the library helped them save money during tough economic times. Four submissions will be featured in the March 2010 issue.

The Campaign for the World’s Libraries

The Latvian Library Association (LLA) and the Romania Library Association (ABR) both joined the Campaign for the World’s Libraries in 2009. The Campaign for the World’s Libraries was developed by ALA and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) to showcase the unique and vital roles played by public, school, academic, and special libraries worldwide. To date, 35 countries have joined the campaign, and the @ your library brand has been translated into each country’s language. New logos reflecting the national colors of each member nation were made available for download during National Library Week 2009.

At the 2009 Annual Conference, ALA President Camila Alire, Past-President Jim Rettig, and ALA President-Elect Roberta Stevens announced the launch of the Spectrum Presidential Initiative (SPI). SPI is a special one-year initiative to raise $1 million for the Spectrum Scholarship Program. Once achieved, the Spectrum Presidential Initiative will allow ALA to provide 90–100 additional Spectrum Scholarships to qualified applicants and grow the Spectrum Endowment to provide future scholars with much-needed support. Established in 1997, the Spectrum Scholarship Program is ALA’s national diversity and recruitment effort designed to address the specific issue of underrepresentation of critically needed racial- and ethnic-minority librarians within the profession while serving as a model for ways to bring attention to larger diversity issues in the future.

The ALA Council elected three new ALA Executive Board members in a vote taken at the 2009 ALA Midwinter Meeting, held January 23–28, 2009, in Denver. Patricia M. Hogan, administrative librarian at the Poplar Creek Public Library District in Streamwood, Illinois; Stephen L. Matthews, librarian with the Currier Library at the Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Virginia; and Courtney L. Young, a reference librarian and professor of women’s studies at Pennsylvania State University in Monaca, are serving three-year terms that began in July 2009 and will conclude in June 2012.

ALA Governing & Strategic On January 21, 2009, the U.S. Supreme Court denied review of the Third Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals’ Documents decision to strike down the Child Online Protection Act, thus ending a decade-long court case.COPA, a congressional effort to overcome the constitutional deficiencies of the Communications Decency Act, Constitution & Bylaws would have criminalized the transmission of materials “for commercial purposes” considered to be “harmful Council to minors” via the Internet if those materials could be accessed by minors.The Freedom to Read Officers & Executive Board Foundation filed amicus briefs at each stage of the litigation, arguing that COPA placed an unconstitutional burden on protected speech between adults. In Appreciation Leadership Other Highlights New Spectrum initiative launched; scholarships given to 48 students Programs and Partners Publishing ALA President Camila Alire, Past President Jim Rettig, and President-Elect Roberta Stevens launched the Spectrum Presidential Initiative, a special one-year effort to raise $1 million for the Washington Office Spectrum Scholarship Program. The initiative will allow ALA to provide 90 to 100 more Spectrum Financial Data Scholarships as well as increase the Spectrum Endowment to provide future scholars with much- ALA Election Information needed support. Established in 1997, Spectrum is ALA’s national diversity and recruitment effort Policy Manual designed to address the underrepresentation of critically needed racial and ethnic librarians in the profession. Offices Forty-eight Spectrum scholarships were awarded in June 2009. This included many funded by the Contact Us “Reach21: Preparing the Next Generation of Librarians for 21st Century Library Leadership” grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services; two by the Medical Library Association/National Library of Medicine; one from the Young Adult Library Services Association; and 10 by proceeds from the ALA/ProQuest Scholarship Bash. Scholarships were also awarded in honor of individuals Leo Albert, Louise Giles, William R. Gordon, Howard M. and Gladys B. Teeple, and Betty J. Turock.

Banned Books Week promotes knowledge as power

The 28th celebration of Banned Books Week, the Office for Intellectual Freedom’s long-running awareness campaign about challenges to library materials, promoted the campaign “Read. Speak. Know,” using quotes from regularly challenged books in hand-drawn posters to capture the central theme of the annual event: that knowledge is powerful and mustn’t be limited in any way. The 2009 campaign brought in more than $100,000.

Media coverage included PBS NOW, the Huffington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, and more than 600 other mentions. The event did generate a few negative articles, including a Wall Street Journal opinion piece titled, “Finding Censorship Where There Is None,” which proposed that there no such thing as a "banned book" since most challenges are filed by parents seeking to protect their children from ideas and language deemed inappropriate by the parents; the WSJ published ALA President Camila Alire's response, which noted that such challenges were indeed censorship, since most parents sought to bar everyone's access to the challenged work, rather than simply preventing their own child from reading the book. Many conservative groups used the observance as an opportunity to encourage the public to donate anti-gay and anti-abortion materials to their libraries.

Also as part of the September 26–October 3, 2009, event the OIF hosted its fifth annual Read-Out! September 26. Some 300 enthusiastic audience members saw highly acclaimed authors read from their own or their favorite books that have been banned or challenged. Frequently challenged author Chris Crutcher emceed the event, which included readings and book-signings by some of the top 10 most challenged authors of the previous year: Justin Richardson, Peter Parnell, Lauren Myracle, Stephen Chbosky, Sarah Brannen, and Cecily von Ziegesar.

OIF continues Conversation on Privacy

The Office for Intellectual Freedom continued its work on the Conversation on Privacy, a program that will culminate in Choose Privacy Week May 2–8, 2010. This civic engagement campaign urges libraries and librarians to stand up as leaders and educators in communities all across the country, calling attention to the value of privacy as the foundation for civil liberties and highlighting growing threats to our privacy rights. New campaign resources included posters, bookmarks, and buttons, along with a redesigned, interactive website (www.privacyrevolution.org) and an active Twitter feed (www.twitter.com/privacyala).

Newly named LLAMA focuses on leadership

The Library Administration and Management Association began the 2008–09 year with the approval of a name change to the Library Leadership and Management Association. The change was made so that the association’s name would more closely reflect its goals and strategic direction, but it also presents a challenge: to move leadership to the forefront of its activities. Key focus areas are continuing education, by providing online webinars and classes, and outreach efforts to bring in new members.

AASL launches initiative to support learning standards

The American Association of School Librarians launched Learning4Life (L4L), a national plan to support states, school systems, and individual schools preparing to implement its Standards for the 21st-Century Learner and Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs. By targeting specific audiences—decision-makers, educators, parents, students, and the public—over the next three to five years, the AASL hopes to introduce the standards and guidelines to internal and external audiences, build awareness of the importance of school library programs, and create an understanding of and commitment to the standards and guidelines. AASL names best Web sites for teaching and learning

In its inaugural year, the American Association of School Librarians’ “Top 25 Web Sites for Teaching and Learning” honored websites that foster innovation, creativity, active participation, and collaboration. The list, which will be updated annually, recognizes free, user-friendly sites that offer tools and resources in organizing and managing, content collaboration, curriculum sharing, media sharing, virtual environments, and social networking and communication. The AASL also honored an additional 21 landmark websites known for their exemplary histories of authoritative, dynamic content and curricular relevance.

“School Libraries Count!” survey includes data on 2.0 tools

Highlights from the 2008 “School Libraries Count!” survey included findings about the use of Web 2.0 tools in elementary, middle, and high schools, which showed that schools encourage collaborative tools to support and enhance classroom teaching. Instructional platforms and technologies such as wikis, blogs, and intranet are popular at all grade levels; collaborative editing, virtual instruction, and social bookmarking are also popular, but not as widely used. Conducted annually, the longitudinal study by the AASL will provide data that can be used to advocate for school library media programs at the local, state, and national levels.

AASL notes: SLM, “webinars,” and travel grants

Author James Patterson served as spokesperson for School Library Month (SLM) in April 2009. . . . Also during SLM, the AASL offered a Learning4Life (L4L) “webinar” series focused on four strands of the division’s learning standards: Skills, Disposition in Action, Responsibilities, and Self-Assessment. . . . Thirty AASL members received $750 travel grants, sponsored by Bound To Stay Bound Books, to attend their first AASL National Conference.

ACRL goes green

The Association for College and Research Libraries strove to integrate sustainability into all aspects of ACRL life. The 2009 National Conference was the most environmentally friendly event ever held by the ACRL, with more than 2,300 individuals signing a “Green Pledge” that committed them to put sustainable ideas into practice while at the conference. More than 240,000 pieces of paper were saved through such green initiatives as digital handouts posted to the Virtual Conference website, bags and badge holders made of recycled materials, program books printed on recycled paper using soy-based ink, electronic press kits for the media, a green-themed opening reception, and donations of surplus food and promotional items to local charities.

In February, Choice moved into its new 7,635–square footoffice in Middletown, Connecticut, occupying the third floor of a new green building that features a prefabricated exterior wall system that provides excellent insulation, a high-efficiency heating and cooling system, insulating windows, and a recycled steel building frame.The Choice office is equipped with energy-efficient lighting and switches, low- volatility paint, and green window treatments and furniture.

ACRL promotes scholarly communication

The ACRL continued its efforts to enhance and promote scholarly communication, releasing an updated version of the division’s popular Scholarly Communication Toolkit in October 2008 in a new format. The ACRL and the Association for Research Libraries continued to

cosponsor the Institute for Scholarly Communication, and the two groups issued the guide “Developing a Scholarly Communication Program in Your Library,” which outlines steps for libraries interested in developing scholarly communication programs. The groups also organized a workshop in conjunction with the ACRL National Conference: “Scholarly Communication Outreach: Crafting Messages That Grab Faculty Attention” drew 70 attendees to Seattle March 11–12, 2009, where Jon Wergin, professor of educational studies at Antioch University, facilitated the first program session and focused on researcher communication practices and skills for interviewing and listening. The ACRL Scholarly Communication Committee selected five sites from 46 applications to host the “Scholarly Communication 101: Starting with the Basics” workshop during the summer of 2009.

ACRL offers opportunities for professional development

More than 1,500 participants took part in the ACRL’s e-Learning activities during the year, which included 16 Moodle-based online seminars and 17 webcasts. To help academic and research librarians maximize their professional-development dollars, the association also launched a new e- Learning Frequent Learner Program, which gives individuals or groups who register for three courses or webcasts a complimentary registration to one additional session. . . . The second annual ACRL Springboard Event—a free live, interactive webcast for ACRL members—was held June 3 with about 300 people tuning in to hear Clifford Lynch, director of the Coalition for Networked Information, discuss issues such as cultural memory in the age of economic instability and the implications of the migration of vast amounts of personal history and activity to the digital environment. . . . The ACRL OnPoint chat series continued with offerings on such topics as student learning outcomes, the culture of assessment, legislative advocacy, connecting with funding sources, and the future of reference desks. . . . To help librarians and institutions develop and implement information literacy programs on their campuses, the national Immersion Program was offered in St. Petersburg, Florida, July 26–31. A teacher track focused on enhancing or extending individual instruction skills, while a program track focused on developing, integrating, or managing campuswide and programmatic information literacy programs. In addition to the popular Immersion Program, “Immersion Assessment Program—Assessment in Practice,” was held in Nashville December 4–7, 2008.

Website helps library-job seekers in a tough economy

The new website Get a Job! is a virtual toolkit for those seeking library jobs in the current economy; it offers resources, links, best practices, and real-life examples from a range of ALA divisions and units. The site also features advice from members as well as career- search professionals.

ALA and ALA-APA help highlight professional integrity

ALA and the ALA-APA joined Professionals for the Public Interest (PftPI), a coalition of19 national and global organizations that seeks to help professionals in both government and private positions maintain integrity in their work. PftPI engages professionals, the public, and policymakers in discussions on ways to defend professional integrity against external pressures and challenges.

ALCTS to develop Preservation Week

In March 2009 the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services received $15,000 in 2010 funding to develop Preservation Week. Modeled after Teen Read Week and National Library Week, Preservation Week, scheduled to launch in May 2010, will help U.S. libraries provide tools—including a variety of toolkits, programs, and a speakers bureau—for users to preserve their own cultural heritage. Developed in collaboration with the Library of Congress, Preservation Week seeks to bring together a number of preservation and conservation organizations to make preserving and conserving our personal cultural heritage a priority. The Institute of Museum and Library Services, ALA Graphics, ALA’s Public Information Office, and ALA’s @ your library campaign are also contributing to the program.

ALCTS continues popular Web courses

Three Web courses offered by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services—Fundamentals of Electronic Resources Acquisitions, Fundamentals of Acquisitions, and Fundamentals of Collection Development and Management— were very successful, and the division began developing three new courses: Fundamentals of Cataloging, Fundamentals of Preservation, and Fundamentals of Classification. The ALCTS also debuted four “webinars” on institutional repositories and offered, free of charge, two webinars on . . . how to conduct a webinar.

International librarians get scholarships for ALCTS Web courses

The ALCTS initiated a program to provide scholarships for each of its Web courses to librarians in less developed countries. More than 30 scholarships were granted to participants from Pakistan, India, the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, and other areas.

RDA programs draw large numbers

With the coming of the new cataloging schema RDA: Resource Description and Access, the ALCTS continued offering programs, preconferences, and forums on RDA. More than 200 people attended each of the RDA updates at Midwinter and Annual Conference, and an RDA pre-conference offered by the ALCTS drew a sellout crowd of 150 participants.

fund to enhance leadership development within the ALSC by sponsoring activities to develop members who show an interest in the ALSC and are committed to it as future leaders. Proceeds from the fund may be used to enhance programming at the ALSC’s Division Leadership Meetings or to provide other opportunities for leadership development.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar lends image to Library Card Sign-up Month

NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar served as 2008 honorary chair of Library Card Sign-up Month in September, donating his time and image to the creation of print and radio PSAs that generated $900,000 in donated ads on behalf of libraries. Print ads ran in national publications such as Entertainment Weekly; O, The Oprah Magazine; and USA Today; while radio PSAs were heard on Westwood One, Fox Sports Radio Networks, and other stations across the country.

Jamie Lee Curtis chairs National Library Week

Author and actress Jamie Lee Curtis served as the 2009 honorary chair of National Library Week April 12– 18, 2009. Curtis lent her image to the production of a print PSA that ran in such publications as Good Housekeeping, Harper’s, and TV Guide and garnered more than $500,000 in donated ad space.

With the theme “Worlds connect @ your library,” NLW provided a national platform to discuss key issues, such as how the economy affects U.S. libraries and the critical role libraries and library workers play during an economic downturn. Interview messages focused on libraries as sources for personal finance information, tax tools, job search resources, and unemployment forms; the surge in library usage; and the release of the “2009 State of America’s Libraries Report.”

To kick off National Library Week, Jesse L. Jackson, president and founder of the RainbowPUSH Coalition, and ALA Executive Director Keith Michael Fiels participated in the Coalition’s Saturday Morning Forum, a televised community affairs program that reaches more than one million viewers. During the Forum, Rev. Jackson and Fiels discussed how libraries are an important community hub for literacy and learning, and a valued resource people turn to during difficult economic times.

ALA Library notes: website work and social networking

Several years ago, the ALA Library set goals to support the work of other ALA staff as they serve the ALA membership and to provide the core information that people—librarians and the general public alike—seek from ALA through its website. In 2008-2009, library staff helped develop site architecture for the redesigned website and provided customer service for site visitors needing assistance during its rollout . . . . The library continues to use social media tools to respond to inquiries and to get information out, from its Professional Tips Wiki to a Facebook page with more than 1,800 fans, from chat inquiries via Meebo to a Twitter feed with some 4,500 followers. Questions received through these new channels are a small but growing portion of the more than 6,000 inquiries fielded each year. . . . Library staff member Valerie Hawkins organized several activities on ALA Island in Second Life, including booktalks and activities during National Library Week. . . . The ALA Fall 2008 Second Life Symposium November 8 attracted nearly 80 attendees, a mix of library professionals and library school students. . . . ALA Librarian Karen Muller, an alumna of the University of Michigan, coordinated weeklong internships by four students from UM’s Michigan School of Information.

ASCLA promotes online toolkits

The Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies promoted two new online toolkits designed to help library staff understand, plan for, and manage a wide range of customers’ special-access needs: “Think Accessible Before You Buy: Questions to Ask to Ensure that the Electronic Resources Your Library Plans to Purchase are Accessible” and the “Toolkit for Serving Patrons with Special Needs.”

ORS continues public access study, introduces issue briefs

The Office for Research and Statistics continued its work to assess public access to computers, Internet-related services in U.S. public libraries, and the impact of library funding changes on connectivity, technology deployment, and sustainability. In addition to publishing Libraries Connect Communities: Public Library Funding and Technology Access Study 2008–2009 and collecting information for the 2009–2010 study, the ORS issued a number of topical briefs that share key findings from the largest and longest-running study of Internet connectivity in libraries. Issue briefs included “U.S. Public Libraries and E-Government Services,” “Supporting Learners in U.S. Public Libraries,” and “Job-Seeking in U.S. Public Libraries.” More information on the project can be found on the Public Library Funding and Technology Access Study website.

PLA offers CPLA courses, online learning

The Public Library Association, along with co-partner local library organizations, hosted several Certified Public Library Administrator (CPLA) courses at public libraries around the country, including Budget and Finance, Technology, Organization and Personnel, Current Issues, Serving Diverse Populations, Marketing, Politics and Networking, and Planning and Management of Buildings. The PLA also offered a number of online courses based on management concepts delineated in its bestselling Results publications.

The Public Programs Office debuted created online resource to help libraries of all types and sizes create cultural and community programs. The website, ProgrammingLibrarian.org, includes a resource library, live learning opportunities, and a blog to keep librarians informed of opportunities and inspiration for new library programs. As the site continues to develop, users will find more resources, ideas, and opportunities to network with peers and programming experts. Development of the site is funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Service (IMLS) to the PPO.

New website supports Picturing America programs in public libraries

The PPO created a new online community to support the development of local programs that incorporate the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Picturing America collection of art reproductions.Besides providing programming ideas for youth, family, and adult audiences, Picturing America for Public Libraries offers registered grantees the opportunity to download digital versions of selected Picturing America images and create print-ready, professionally designed posters, flyers, and bookmarks customized for their libraries. The IMLS provided major support for the site.

The ALA website recorded 6,326,374 visits from October 1, 2008, to September 30, 2009. Visitors came from 228 countries, and 147,393 pages were viewed a total of 17,862,342 times during the year. The most popular pages included the site’s home page, with more than 2.5 million page views. . . . The Public Information Office achieved more than 5,000 media clips, the equivalent of a circulation of more than 151 billion and more than $28.3 million in free publicity for ALA. . . . The Office for Human Resource Development and Recruitment reported a total of 812 applicants to the Scholarship Clearinghouse, which awarded about $413,000 to 69 scholarship recipients. . . . At the Association of College and Research Libraries 14th National Conference in March 2009, the onsite Placement Center drew 286 employers and job-seekers over the course of two days, and nearly 100 conference attendees came to the Placement Center to take advantage of its resume review service. . . . The Emerging Leaders program included 106 participants working on more than 25 projects.

Smart investing @ your library wins ASAE Award of Excellence

Smart investing @ your library, a grant program offered by the FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) Investor Education Foundation and the Reference and User Services Association, was one of 17 programs recognized with an Award of Excellence from the 2009 Associations Advance America Awards program, sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives and the Center for Association Leadership. Begun in 2007, Smart investing @ your library is an ongoing national program that helps public libraries provide effective, unbiased financial and investor education resources and services through grant funding ranging from $5,000 to $100,000, as well as with assistance in the areas of marketing, communications, evaluation, and project management.

Pilot project encourages summer reading for teens

In June 2009, YALSA and World Wrestling Entertainment launched the SummerSlam Reading Jam, a pilot project to boost summer reading for teens. Some 500 libraries encouraged teens and tweens to check out two books between June 24 and July 16; each patron who did was entered into a contest to win a trip to the SummerSlam Pay-per-View event in Los Angeles in August 2009. YALSA and World Wrestling Entertainment plan to expand the project in 2010.

YALSA develops the Ultimate Teen Bookshelf

YALSA created a new document highlighting must-have teen materials. The Ultimate Teen Bookshelf, available online and as a downloadable PDF, can be found at www.ala.org/teenbookshelf. Librarians can use this collection to ensure they have quality materials to attract teens, while parents and teens can use it to find interesting books to keep reading skills sharp between school years.

Southardresigned as executive director of the Public Library Association to become executive director of the Boone County (Ky.) Public Library. Barbara Macikas, former PLA deputy executive director, re-joined the PLA as executive director on November 23, 2009. The Beyond Words Constitution & Bylaws grants, sponsored by national discount retailer Dollar General, can be used to Council buy books, media, and/or library equipment that support learning in a school Officers & Executive Board library environment. The American Association of School Librarians administers the program in collaboration with the National Education Association. Contact Us “Turning the Page” draws to a close

“Turning the Page: Building Your Library Community” was developed by the Public Library Association as a required educational component for public libraries participating in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Opportunity Online hardware grants program. Funded by a $7.7-million grant from the foundation, the program began in March 2008. The third and final round of grantee conferences wrapped up in November 2009, with one more event for non-grantees held at the PLA’s 2010 National Conference in Portland, Ore. More than 3,000 participants from 32 states attended Turning the Page conferences; another 500 completed the online version.

During the two-day training seminars, library staff, trustees, and community supporters explored the skills integral to successful advocacy campaigns. The immediate goal involved raising matching grant funds, but those who participated were empowered with the practical tools and confidence to undertake long-term efforts on behalf of their institutions. Results have been positive, with a majority of libraries making the necessary match. The director of the August County (Virginia) Library echoed a popular sentiment when she said: “While attendance was an Opportunity Online grant requirement, it proved to be one of the best experiences we had ever had.”

The PLA’s involvement in the Opportunity Online hardware grant program concludes May 31, 2010.

ALSC produces reading list for Oprah site

The Oprah Winfrey Show approached the Association for Library Service to Children to recommend titles for its Kids Reading List, which showcases recent and classic titles on the show’s website. We the People Bookshelf: “Picturing America”

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Public Programs Office partnered to present the sixth We the People Bookshelf, which each year gives sets of books based on a chosen theme to libraries nationwide. The 2009 program provided sets of 17 classic children’s books on the theme “Picturing America” to 4,000 public and school libraries. Library programs around the theme

will take place nationally through May 2010. The 2010–2011 theme is “A More Perfect Union.”

NEH, PPO give 26,300 sets of American art

In January 2009, the NEH and the ALA Public Programs Office announced that 26,300 public libraries and schools would receive sets of high-quality reproductions of 40 pieces of great American art (each about 24 by 36 inches), as part of the NEH’s Picturing America initiative. Each set came with an illustrated teacher’s resource book with information about the artists and artwork plus lesson ideas for all grade levels to facilitate the use of the reproductions in core subject areas. Great Stories CLUB reaches out to underserved teens

In January 2009, 237 libraries were chosen to receive 11 sets of three theme-related books to give to members of a reading club. The sets were granted through the Great Stories CLUB (Connecting Libraries, Underserved teens, and Books), a reading and discussion program designed to reach underserved, troubled teen populations through books that are relevant to their lives. Launched in 2005 by the PPO and the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the program is built on partnerships between libraries and other organizations that serve troubled teens, including juvenile-justice facilities, alternative high schools, drug-rehabilitation centers, nonprofits serving teen parents, and other agencies.

Among those selected to receive grants, 53 sites will also receive small cash grants to support program-related expenses. Funding was provided for this program by Oprah’s Angel Network. For more information, visit www.ala.org/greatstories.

Soul of a People: Voices from the Writers’ Project

In December 2008, the PPO announced that 30 libraries would receive $2,500 grants from the NEH to present five different outreach programs in connection with the documentary “Soul of a People: Voices from the Writers’ Project.” Film and library outreach programs acquainted public, academic, and special library audiences with the story of the largest cultural experiment in U.S. history—the Federal Writers’ Project of the Works Progress Administration—told against the backdrop of the Depression and 1930s America.

On tour: PPO traveling exhibitions

The PPO toured seven ongoing traveling exhibitions across the country, visiting a total of 88 public, academic, and special libraries in 2008-2009. The exhibitions were “Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America,” “Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World,” “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians,” “Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln’s Journey to Emancipation,” “John Adams Unbound,” “Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country,” and “Pride and Passion: The African American Baseball Experience.”

In addition, the PPO announced tours for three new traveling exhibitions:

“Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” offers a fresh perspective on Abraham Lincoln that focuses on his struggle to meet the political and constitutional challenges of the Civil War. The exhibition explores how Lincoln used the Constitution to confront three intertwined crises of the war: the secession of Southern states, slavery, and wartime civil liberties. Twenty-five public, academic, and special libraries will host the exhibit from August 2009 through October 2013. The traveling exhibition and tour are funded by a major grant from the NEH to the National Constitution Center. “Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery”features astronomy through the ages, from Galileo’s early findings to the latest results of the Hubble Space Telescope. The exhibit vividly illustrates 400 years of growth in our knowledge of not only planets, stars, nebulae, and galaxies but also the size and scale of the universe in both space and time. Forty public libraries will host the exhibit for a six-week period from January 2009 through April 2010. The traveling exhibition was developed in cooperation with the Space Telescope Science Institute Office of Public Outreach and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory to mark the International Year of Astronomy in 2009. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration provided major funding for the exhibit. “Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine”uses materials from the National Library of Medicine’s History of Medicine collections to explore Harry Potter’s world, its roots in Renaissance science, and the ethical questions that affected not only the wizards in J.K. Rowling’s books but also the historical thinkers featured in the series. Exhibition panels feature the works of 15th­ and 16th-century alchemists, naturalists, and occultists and explore the intersection between the Harry Potter novels and Renaissance thinkers, lore, and practices. Twelve libraries will host the special small-format exhibit for a four-week period between September 2009 and November 2010 and present at least two public programs on the exhibition themes. This traveling exhibit is presented by the PPO in cooperation with the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health.

4,800-plus libraries register for Teen Read Week

More than 4,800 libraries registered to participate in Teen Read Week, the annual literacy initiative from YALSA. The 2008 theme, Books with Bite, promoted a variety of books—from vampire stories to cooking to technology—as tools for getting young adults to read for the fun of it. Corporate sponsorship by Mirrorstone again allowed YALSA to design, print, and distribute a calendar highlighting its initiatives and special events through American Libraries. YALSA also hosted a Teen Read Week kickoff event in Chicago at Benito Juarez Community Academy featuring Kimberly Pauley, author of Sucks to Be Me: The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton, Teen Vampire. Maybe. More than 8,000 teens voted on the 2008 Teens’ Top Ten, which was won by Eclipse, by Stephenie Meyer; teens also chose the 2009 theme, Read Beyond Reality @ your library. YALSA celebrates third Teen Tech Week

With the theme Press Play @ your library, the third annual Teen Tech Week, held March 8–14, 2009, again encouraged teens to explore the nonprint resources available at their libraries. Through funding from the Verizon Foundation, YALSA distributed $10,000 in mini-grants to 20 librarians. Galaxy Press provided six public service announcements featuring Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants, to promote the event. Promotional Partners for Teen Tech Week 2008 were Evanced Solutions, Galaxy Press, Rosen Publishing, Simon & Schuster, Tutor.com, and the Verizon Foundation. Support Teen Literature Day distributes 8,000 teen books to pediatric hospitals

The third annual Support Teen Literature Day was held April 16, 2009, in conjunction with National Library Week. Support Teen Literature Day helps raise awareness about teen literature and serves as the launch for each year’s Teen Read Week. YALSA worked with the Readergirlz (www.readergirlz.com) and Guys Lit Wire (http://guyslitwire.blogspot.com). Operation TBD (Teen Book Drop), which in 2009 saw 18 publishers donating 8,000 teen books to pediatric centers in the United States and Canada, will take place again on Support Teen Literature Day 2010.

WrestleMania Reading Challenge

More than 1,600 libraries took up the 2009 WrestleMania Reading Challenge, sponsored by YALSA and World Wrestling Entertainment, with support from Mattel. In 2009, participation extended to include those in grades 5–12. The challenge begins Teen Read Week and encourages participating youth to read beyond Teen Read Week by offering prizes and incentives. Fifteen finalists in three categories won trips to WrestleMania XXV in Houston, plus $2,000 for their libraries.

Día wiki helps share ideas year-round

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is the national center for El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day). In 2009, more than 400 libraries registered their celebrations with the ALSC, and more than 28,000 complimentary bilingual brochures were distributed. A Día wiki, accessible from the Día home page at www.ala.org/dia, was launched, offering a forum for idea-sharing for programming and celebrations.

Pilot “Read to Grow” program gets help from ALSC

The ALSC participated in the launch of a “Read to Grow” pilot community outreach program by media and marketing research firm Arbitron. The first “Read to Grow” event was held during the Calle Ocho festival in Miami on March 15, 2009. The ALSC provided materials for distribution about the Pura Belpré Award, as well as Día and Born to Read. Arbitron distributed copies of Martina, the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale, a 2008 Belpré Honor Book for illustration, and The Storyteller’s Candle, a 2009 Belpré Author Honor Book. The ALSC participated in a second “Read to Grow” event on April 26 during “Fiesta Broadway” in Los Angeles.

ALSC partners on Week of the Young Child

The ALSC partnered with the National Association for the Education of Young Children on the Week of the Young Child project April 19-25, 2009. The WOYC is an annual celebration designed to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet these needs.

ALSC events encourage the gift of time

Two ALSC events encourage giving the gift of time. Celebrated on Newbery Medalist Beverly Cleary’s birthday April 12, Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Day encourages families to designate time to put aside other activities and read together. The initiative features Ramona Quimby as its official “spokesperson.” Visit www.dropeverythingandread.com. Through ALSC outreach to members, 55 libraries participated in the Boys and Girls Clubs Day for Kids, which is intended to celebrate America’s children through the gift of meaningful time with a positive adult, on September 20, 2008. ALSC promotes Read for the Record

The ALSC helped publicize Jumpstart’s Read for the Record event, an annual one-day reading promotion that encourages children all over the country to read the same book on the same day, with the goal of gaining entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. Step Up to the Plate @ your library

The Step Up to the Plate @ your library program, developed by ALA and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, concluded with a drawing at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Step Up to the Plate spokesperson and Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith chose Oscar Youngquist, 11, of Racine, Wisconsin, as the grand-prize winner.

The fourth season of the program kicked off during Youth Baseball Week April 13– 19, 2009, and was a featured program during the week’s celebration at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The program once again centered on a baseball trivia contest, with this year’s questions, developed by the library staff at the Hall of Fame, focusing on multiculturalism in baseball and baseball around the world.

Launched in September 2008 at the national conference of REFORMA (the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking), the “en tu biblioteca” campaign was developed to encourage members of the Latino community to use their local libraries. Univision Radio, the nation’s largest Spanish-language radio broadcaster, aired public service announcements (PSAs) in 13 of the country’s top Latino markets in the fall and spring, with a combined value of $1 million in donated air time.

ALA and Univision Radio developed the PSAs, which feature the voices of Univision Radio personality Javier Romero and Illinois librarian Semiramis M. Grady. With a message of “Yo te puedo ayudar” (“I can help you”), the campaign presents the librarian as a trusted provider of information and support, capable of providing access to the wide range of opportunities represented by the local library.

A Spanish-language website for the public at www.entubiblioteca.org supports the messages of the radio PSAs. Librarians can listen to the radio PSAs as well as download free posters, flyers, and bookmarks. Smart investing @ your library helps patrons in tough economic times

In April 2009, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation and ALA’s Reference and User Services Association offered a new resource for libraries to help people cope with tough economic times through the Smart investing @ your library program.

FINRA’s Investor Alert brochure “Job Dislocation: Making Smart Financial Choices after a Job Loss” offers guidance and tips for the general public on maintaining financial stability during a period of unemployment. Topics covered include taking the right financial steps, protecting against investment fraud, understanding health insurance options, and asking appropriate questions about employer benefit plans. Public libraries can request printed brochures or download it from FINRA’s website. The brochure is available in both English and Spanish.

Since 2007, Smart investing @ your library has issued $1.7 million in grants to 25 libraries nationwide for the development of financial education programs. The program is designed to build the capacity of public libraries to provide effective, unbiased financial and investor education resources and services to library patrons. Woman’s Day publishes “How I used the library to improve my health”

Continuing an eight-year partnership with the Campaign for America’s Libraries, Woman’s Day magazine featured the four winners of its latest library initiative, which asked readers how they used the library to improve a family member’s or their own emotional, mental, or physical health. Winners included Elaine Elinson of San Francisco, who found solace in the library when her husband was ill; Amy A. Smith of Minneapolis, who used the resources at her library to learn about her postpartum depression; Carol Strazer of Red Feather Lakes, Colorado, who was able to make an informed health choice thanks to the research training offered at her library; and Linda Slayton of Des Moines, Iowa, who, after losing her eyesight, used books on tape provided by the Library of Congress to rediscover her love of reading.

Also in the March issue, the magazine announced its next initiative, which asks women to submit stories of how the library has helped them save money during tough economic times. One submission will be featured in the March 2010 issue, and three others will appear on www.womansday.com. 34 libraries get the American Dream Starts @ your library grants

The American Dream Starts @ your library grant, developed by ALA and funded through Campaign partner Dollar General Literacy Foundation, awarded funding to 34 public libraries to add or expand literacy services for adult English-language learners.

An American Dream Starts @ your library online toolkit at http://www.americandreamtoolkit.org houses resources, service models, and examples of best practices collected from libraries currently offering literacy services for new Americans. The toolkit was expanded in early 2009 to feature new online resources and in-depth profiles of each of the 34 American Dream libraries. The program is administered

Using the Campaign for America’s Libraries @ your library brand, Verizon’s Thinkfinity.org featured librarian-specific content from ALA and library initiatives in a collection of resources specifically for school library media specialists. The Thinkfinity @ your library page showcases materials collected from Thinkfinity content partners and includes discipline-specific, standards- based educational resources on current subject areas. It also highlighted events such as Youth Media Month, School Library Media Month, and El día de los niños, El día de los libros.

Thinkfinity.org is the Verizon Foundation’s comprehensive program and online portal to 55,000 standards-based, grade-specific, K-12 lesson plans and other educational resources provided in partnership with many of the nation’s leading educational and literacy organizations. Latvia and Romania associations join Campaign for the World’s Libraries

The Latvian Library Association and the Romania Library Association both joined the Campaign for the World’s Libraries in 2009.

The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA), a campaign member since 2007, used the @ your library brand to promote libraries as learning resources with two campaigns during South African Library Week March 16–20, 2009: “Race for knowledge @ your library” for children and “The race for knowledge continues . . . @ your library” for adults.

The Association of Greek Librarians and Information Scientists, a campaign member since 2002, highlighted the @ your library brand at the 2009 International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Conference in Milan, Italy. George Glossiotis, vice president of the association, presented a report on the country’s use of the @ your library brand and also distributed calendars using the brand.

The Campaign for the World’s Libraries was developed by ALA and IFLA to showcase the unique and vital roles played by public, school, academic, and special libraries worldwide. To date, 35 countries have joined the campaign, and the @ your library brand has been translated into each country’s language. New logos reflecting the national colors of each member’s nation were made available for download during National Library Week 2009.

Kids! @ your library provides new resources

The Association for Library Service to Children officially launched phase two of the Kids! @ your library campaign at the “A.R.T. and Your Library: How You Can Bring Them Together!” program at ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.

Phase two incorporates additional free materials into the campaign’s online toolkit to help librarians promote the library and library resources to children in grades 5-8. New tools include free downloadable “So much to see. So much to do. @ your library” mini-posters and bookmarks as well as print-ready art designed by award-winning children’s book illustrator and graphic designer David Diaz. Additional materials include two new readers’ theater scripts based on the work of Christopher Paul Curtis and Jerry Spinelli, library activities and games, and two new poetry resources: “15 Ways to Use Poetry @ your library” and “Poetry Programs @ your library.”

Offices ALA JobLIST: jobs even in tight times Contact Us ALA JobLIST, the association’s one-stop library jobs website and a top source for both job-seekers and employers, had a facelift this year and added features in response to user feedback. The redesigned homepage shows the latest listings at a glance and offers clearer paths for job seekers and employers to find what they need on the site. Job listings benefit from wider online distribution, and advertising employers have more options to control how candidates respond to ads and contact them. Job seekers can also easily save and share specific job listings using a variety of social networking sites and tools.

JobLIST staff participated in the ALA 2010 project Get a Job! helping develop an interactive website with tips, suggested links and readings, podcasts, and activities for new librarians and support staff, those looking to change position, or people who have been laid off or are are having difficulty finding the right position.

JobLIST also has an active presence on both Facebook and Twitter, where new job listings and items of general interest to job seekers and hiring employers are posted daily. Despite the shrinking number of jobs available during the economic crisis, this joint project of the Association of College and Research Libraries, American Libraries, and the Office for Human Resource Development and Recruitment listed almost 1,300 open positions.

American Libraries: open access to a wealth of content

American Libraries, ALA’s flagship news and feature magazine, continued to offer readers up-to-the-minute information in a growing variety of formats, with digital supplements the latest addition. AL’s suite now includes 10 issues of the print magazine, the weekly e-newsletter American Libraries Direct, a student version of AL Direct, AL Focus videocasts, the American Libraries Online newsfeed, occasional digital supplements, and classified employment ads through ALA JobLIST.

The magazine celebrated the first Open Access Day in October 2008 by opening up its Web content and making AL Direct available to anyone for the asking. Formerly accessible only with a member login, each current issue of the print magazine is open to all, as are back issues through 2003.

AL launched its own blog, AL Inside Scoop, where Editor-in- Chief Leonard Kniffel and other members of the editorial staff offer an insider’s view of goings-on at ALA headquarters and the hot topics ALA staffers are talking about in the hallways. The blog also offers extensive coverage of ALA conferences.

AL’s well-received first digital supplement was published in December 2008. The “Digital Supplement on Professional Learning” focused on the value of lifelong learning; the second digital supplement was published in conjunction with the April 2009 facilities issue; and in collaboration with Membership Development, a digital international supplement was published in summer 2009, highlighting aspects of ALA divisions’ work with particular relevance and appeal to librarians in other countries.

AL Focus published new videos through the year, all of which are available online. Video reporting—some with a solid dose of humor— included ALA, the ACRL, REFORMA, and other conferences; the ALA TechSource Gaming Symposium; campaigns such as Banned Books Week and National Library Week; and other library- and ALA-related events.

The print magazine offered informative, topical updates on all kinds of issues affecting librarians and libraries, from dealing with dysfunctional staff to a story on tagging, from the then-upcoming Obama presidency and what it might mean for libraries to a look at training and retooling in tight times. AL “Newsmaker” profiled a wide range of people with diverse roles and influences in the library world, including Cory Doctorow, Kay Ryan, Patricia Martin, Richard Gottlieb, Johannes Gebregeorgis, and Cokie Roberts. As a one-time response to the financial crisis, ALpublished a combined August/September in 2009.

Booklist Publications: more of everything in every format

Booklist Publications had another busy year in digital media, with new blogs, a new e-newsletter, and several new videos, while maintaining the quality and depth of its print publications. The whole suite of publications offered numerous features, articles, top 10 lists, read-alikes, and listen-alikes, in addition to the more than 8,500 titles that were reviewed and recommended in adult, youth, media, and reference.

Booklist Online added three new blogs during the year, meeting the needs and interests of an ever-increasing range of librarians and readers: Audiobooker, by teacher librarian and certified audiobook addict Mary Burkey, offers readers listening notes, teaching resources, classroom examples, and what she describes as an “online scrapbook of audiobook minutia, digital literature ramblings, and random ridiculous addendums.” Bookends features middle-school librarians Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan discussing YA and children’s books, offering reviews, best practices, general advice, professional tips, personal notes, and a good dash of humor. In Points of Reference, Mary Ellen Quinn and a team of front-line experts from academic, public, and school libraries post about reference sources and trends in reference publishing and services.

The popular Booklist blog Book Group Buzz, which provides helpful and entertaining information to reading groups both in and outside libraries, was selected as the official partner blog by the Women’s National Book Association for its second National Reading Group Month in October.

Booklist Online Exclusives joined the roster of free, content-driven e-newsletters, providing Booklist readers with additional full-text reviews (600 in 2008 alone) and features at no additional cost. The Web exclusives include timely reviews of hot books that publishers keep under wraps until their on-sale dates.

Starting with the September 2008 issue of the e-newsletter Quick Tips, Book Links magazine teamed up with TeachingBooks.net to give readers free access to online author interviews, discussion guides, book readings, and websites that support titles and authors covered in each issue. In May, Booklist announced the fiscal 2010 plan for Book Links magazine to be published as a quarterly print supplement to Booklist, at no additional cost to subscribers, rather than as a stand-alone magazine. Book Links’ editorial focus and original content will continue to fulfill the mission of connecting children with books and related media. Book Links content will also appear in Booklist Online, further enriching the site and database as a resource for school and youth librarians.

Booklist Online started hosting open quarterly Webinars to extend demonstrations maximizing the use of the site to the virtual world. Hundreds of attendees participated as senior Booklist editors discussed various Booklist Online–related topics, including collection development and “Daily Tips for Daily Use.”

Booklist Publications joined the Twitterati at http://twitter.com/ALA_Booklist. Daily tweets now point more than 1,200 followers to timely free material on Booklist Online, including the Review of the Day, blog posts, feature articles, special offers and incentives, as well as entertaining items like the not-to-be missed Booklist promo video, “We Read Everything.”

The Back Page by Bill Ott, published by ALA Editions, was launched at ALA Annual Conference in Chicago (prompting another Back Page about the launch party). A compendium of the literal back pages of Booklist, the book is filled with anecdotes, stories, quizzes, and a host of insights into what makes books what they are.

ALA Graphics: a diverse, green, star-studded, and character-filled year

ALA Graphics launched an array of new products in fiscal 2009, several based on long-term partners within ALA and others with publishers, celebrity agents,

and photographers. The year got off to a star-studded start with the fastest- moving celebrity READ poster on record, featuring the stars of the movie Twilight, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Other celebrities appearing on READ posters included Hugh Laurie, best known for his portrayal of Dr. Gregory House in the hit series House; America Ferrera, known for her role in Ugly Betty; Cole Hamels from the Philadelphia Phillies; Yao Ming from the Houston Rockets; actress Rachel McAdams; R&B recording artist and actor Ne-Yo; and the Jonas Brothers.

New character posters based on popular young adult and children’s books included Diary of a Wimpy Kid, a series popular with young boys; two sets for Where the Wild Things Are (one featuring the classic art of Maurice Sendak and the other featuring photography from the film adaptation); Library Lion; original art by Eric Carle; Maximum Read, based on the manga series by James Patterson; Vampire Kisses, from a young-adult graphic novel series; Kevin Henkes’ Old Bear; Tale of Despereaux, a popular children’s book and movie; Gotham City characters from DC Comics; and a Coraline poster and bookmark featuring art from the movie.

The diversity poster and bookmark line was expanded to include Latino Heritage Month in the fall, Black History in February, Women’s History in March, and Asian/Pacific American Heritage in May. A Celebrate Native American Literature poster and bookmark were published in partnership with the American Indian Library Association.

A poster celebrating children’s poetry by Mary Ann Hoberman, the U.S. children’s poet laureate, marked National Poetry Month in April, while a new History Lives poster and bookmark honored the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. Campaign-related posters, bookmarks, and other items included Banned Books Week, Teen Read Week, Teen Tech Week and National Library Week. And, in partnership with the American Association of School Librarians, Graphics produced a poster and bookmark highlighting the new Standards for the 21st-Century Learner.

A “green” product line with the message “Read Renew Return” debuted and grew to include a bamboo lanyard, a reusable nylon grocery bag, an organic cotton T-shirt, and library card sleeves providing an additional incentive for librarians to promote library card use along with their own library information.

Other new nonprint products included expansions of the Born to Read line and a hot chocolate mug featuring the Dewey numbers for chocolate and marshmallows.

The ALA Graphics catalog had a facelift in the spring, with a redesign and reorganization of some of the pages to better reflect recent changes, including on the online store.

The READ CD blog (www.readcd.ala.org/blog) continued to draw visitors interested in learning about the READ CD or looking for guidance on how to use it more effectively. The Mini READ Poster Generator, designed for creating small READ posters for use in online media, proved popular with READ Blog users and contributors as well as other visitors to the site.

ALA online resources: digital content, digital delivery

The big news for ALA TechSource was the completion of phase two of the Drupal-based website update, along with enhanced electronic delivery of Library Technology Reports and Smart Libraries Newsletter through MetaPress, a leading e-journal host. This new electronic delivery platform for ALA TechSource opened for business in May at alatechsource.metapress.com.

The ALA TechSource blog continued to offer timely perspectives from academic and public libraries with posts from Jason Griffey, Kate Sheehan, Michael Stephens, Cindi Trainor, Tom Peters, and ALA TechSource Editor Dan Freeman. The blog welcomed the Library 2.0 gang podcast as a regular feature, syndicated by Talis. ALA TechSource also continued supplementing the print publications with online events and activities, most notably expanding its presence on Twitter, surpassing 2,000 followers. UTechSource also hosted a forum in Second Life with Library Technology Reports author Joe Sanchez on how librarians and educators can use virtual worlds as instructional tools.

Guide to Reference, the new searchable, browsable, and interactive online expansion of Guide to Reference Books, with annotated entries for more than 16,000 trusted go-to sources, became available for subscription in December 2008.

The full draft of Resource Description and Access (RDA), the new cataloging standard that will replace AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, second edition), was released in November 2008 for constituency review. Final changes to the RDA text were received from the joint steering committee and began undergoing conversion to XML. Beta testing was scheduled to start in fall 2009.

AASL offers new standards and guidelines

Following and supporting its Standards for the 21st-Century Learner, the American Association of School Librarians published two more titles to bring school library programs into the 21st century. Standards for the 21st-Century Learner in Action includes indicators, benchmarks, model examples, and assessments to support school library specialists and other educators in teaching the essential learning skills defined in the learning standards. Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs provides leadership principles that address how and what is required to master a changing school library environment that is driven by learners and the learning process.

“Resources for College Libraries: Career Resources” is the most recent addition to the Resources for College Libraries family of products for the undergraduate curriculum. Jointly developed by Choice and R.R. Bowker, the new resource contains a core list of nearly 5,000 essential books and online resources for community, vocational, and technical college libraries in fields such as Allied Health, Building and Construction Trades, Engineering and Technology, and Graphic and Apparel Arts.

Four new standards and guidelines were published: “A Guideline for the Screening and Appointment of Academic Librarians,” “ALA-SAA [Society of American Archivists] Joint Statement on Access to Research Materials in Archives and Special Collections Libraries,” “Guidelines for Curriculum Materials Centers,” and “Standards for Proficiencies for Instruction Librarians and Coordinators: A Practical Guide.”

Mean salary for librarians drops slightly; median increases 2%

In the 2009 edition of the ALA-APA Salary Survey: Librarian—Public and Academic, data from more than 1,179 public and academic libraries showed the mean salary for librarians with ALA-accredited master’s degrees decreased less than 1 percent from 2008—down $100 to $58,860—while the median salary was $54,500, 2 percent higher than in 2008, with salaries ranging from $22,000 to $256,800. The survey is available to subscribers to the ALA-APA Library Salary Database, in print from the ALA Online Store, and in public-only and academic-only downloads.

ALCTS helps libraries seize opportunities

The Association for Library Collections and Technical Services published one book, Risk and Entrepreneurship in Libraries: Seizing Opportunities for Change, by Pamela Bluh and Cindy Hepfer, which illustrates how ambitious, energetic librarians can transform their organizations, re-envision library services, focus attention on the needs of library users, and partner with other institutions or organizations to make libraries more exciting and relevant.

PLA publications: resources for public librarians

The Public Library Association published two poster kits for librarians to distribute to their young readers. “100 Best Books to Read in Kindergarten” lists picture books to read aloud to kindergarten-age children and includes classics as well as contemporary books that can be checked off as they are read. The kit includes two posters (“100 Best books to Read in Kindergarten” and “100 More Books to Read in Kindergarten”), a parent guide, and bookmarks. “75 of the Best Books for Young Children” lists board books and picture books to read to children through preschool age. The list includes classics, books that teach important concepts, stories to sing, books with rhyme and rhythm, and books for bedtime. Also included are guidelines and stickers for adding to poster as books are read. Both PLA poster kits are sold in packs of 25. The lists were developed by the West Bloomfield (Mich.) Public Library.

In 2009, the PLA released the second of its “train the trainer” kits, “Customer Service: Balancing Rights and Responsibilities.” This kit, written by Sandra Nelson, contains everything needed to hold a 4-4½–hour customer service workshop. Content focuses on creating effective customer service policies in the library by defining the rights and responsibilities of both customers and staff members. Trainers learn how to describe the difference between security issues and public service issues, explain the rights and responsibilities of staff and customers in a customer service interaction, define and illustrate assertive communication techniques, provide examples of effective and ineffective customer service interactions, facilitate general discussions and manage group interactions, and evaluate the effectiveness of the training program and revise it if needed. The kits includes an introduction/instructions, trainer’s agenda, PowerPoint presentation, script, participant handouts, and evaluation forms. This is a downloadable training kit and must be ordered from the ALA store, www.alastore.ala.org.

The 2009 ALA-PLA Public Library Data Service (PLDS) Statistical Report, available in print and online formats, contains data gathered from more than 800 public libraries on finances, library resources, annual use, and technology. This year’s special survey focused on public library facilities.

YALSA notes: a best-seller, awards and friends

The Young Adult Library Services Association published one of ALA Editions’ best sellers, Quick and Popular Reads for Teens, edited by Pam Spencer Holley. . . . Young Adult Library Services, YALSA’s quarterly journal, won an APEX Award for Publication Excellence for its 2008 issues edited by RoseMary Honnold. . . . YALSA’ board approved two white papers: “The Benefits of Including Dedicated Young Adult Librarians on Staff in the Public Library” and “The Importance of Young Adult Services in LIS Curricula.”

ALA Governing & Strategic In late October 2008, Google, the Authors Guild, and the Association of American Documents Publishers proposed a major agreement to resolve the class-action lawsuit brought in response to Google’s Book Search digitization project to scan millions of books Constitution & Bylaws provided by research libraries. Publishing More than 400 librarians and library supporters traveled to Washington, D.C., to attend National Library Legislative Day May 11-12, 2009. Washington Office Participants spent the first day at briefings on a variety of issues including appropriations, telecommunications, and the USA PATRIOT Financial Data Act and then took part in a congressional reception overlooking the U.S. Capitol Building. On May 12, participants put their knowledge to ALA Election Information work while meeting with their elected officials and their staffs. Policy Manual Offices ALA President Rettig speaks at National Press Club Contact Us ALA President Jim Rettig held a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington on May 11, 2009, as part of National Library Legislative Day. Rettig’s remarks highlighted key library issues, including the many ways libraries assist individuals during economic downturn and the importance of funding libraries so that they can continue to meet the needs of the American public. The press conference later aired on C-SPAN 2.

Leaders draft principles for traditional cultural expression ALA President Jim Rettig at the National Press Club. In mid-February 2009, a dozen experts met at the Washington Office to discuss principles for traditional cultural expression and to begin the process of writing a statement of principles. This working meeting followed information-collection activities at the conference that the OITP held on this topic in November 2008. Ultimately, the principles will be brought to the ALA Council for endorsement as ALA policy.

Library organizations oppose Fair Copyright in Research Works Act

ALA and the Association of College and Research Libraries were among the library and research organizations renewing their opposition to the Fair Copyright in Research Works Act, reintroduced in Congress as H.R. 801. The legislation would reverse a mandate by the National Institutes of Health that all research funded by NIH grants be made freely available in PubMed Central within one year of publication.

Library Copyright Alliance gains strength

The ACRL became an active partner in the Library Copyright Alliance, joining ALA and the ARL to work toward a unified voice and common strategy for the library community in responding to and developing proposals to amend national and international copyright law and policy for the digital environment. The LCA’s efforts included issuing a statement on “Limitations and Exceptions for Libraries and Archives” at the World Intellectual Property Organization Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights Eighteenth Session in

Education secretary helps kick off summer volunteer program

ALA President Jim Rettig facilitated a roundtable discussion with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, and regional librarians in a special kickoff event for President Obama’s summer volunteer campaign, “United We Serve,” June 22 at Fanwood (N.J.) Memorial Library.

Office for Information Technology Policy

OITP receives $850,000 Gates Foundation grant Education Secretary Arne Duncan (in white shirt) is flanked by New Jersey Gov. Jon In December 2008, the Office for Information Corzine (seated) and ALA President Jim Rettig. Technology Policy (OITP) received an $851,889 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to provide research and expertise that will help state library agencies ensure that library broadband connections are sustainable. The OITP also developed and disseminated case studies demonstrating how public libraries can successfully sustain broadband for patrons.

In support of summits in the seven pilot states, OITP developed state profiles of library connectivity and made them available to summit participants. The first four summits—in Massachusetts, Virginia, New York, and Arkansas—were held in late April to mid-June. Copyright tools and materials released

In January 2009, OITP released the Section 108 Spinner to help librarians determine whether a particular reproduction is covered by Section 108 of the U.S. Copyright Code, which allows libraries and archives, under certain circumstances, to make reproductions of copyrighted materials without the permission of the copyright holder.

In February, OITP, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and the National Council of Teachers of English released a revised version of copyright lesson plans for middle-school students. New features of the lessons include models of collaborative teaching between classroom teachers and school library media specialists and connections to the AASL’s Standards for the 21st Century Learner.

OITP also released two new online copyright education tools: the Fair Use Evaluator and the Exceptions for Instructors eTool. The Fair Use Evaluator is an online tool that can help users understand how to determine if the use of a protected work is a “fair use.” It helps users collect, organize, and document the information they may need to support a fair-use claim and provides a time-stamped PDF for the users’ records. The Exceptions for Instructors eTool guides users through the educational exceptions in U.S. copyright law, helping to explain and clarify rights and responsibilities for the performance and display of copyrighted content in traditional, distance, and blended educational models. OITP gives advice on broadband

On May 20, 2009, OITP and the Library of Michigan jointly hosted a Broadband Summit at in East Lansing, Michigan, to discuss the impact of broadband on economic development in communities and how libraries can serve as hubs for broadband expansion. ALA’s telecom consultant John Windhausen was the keynote speaker.

The Washington Office also released two documents that provide an overview of broadband funding programs and offer strategies for libraries that are considering applying: “Broadband Funding: American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009” and “Guidance for the Library Community: Preparing a Proposal for the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program.” ALA files comments with FCC

In response to a Notice of Inquiry from the Federal Communications Commission, the OITP filed comments on E-rate program oversight in November 2008. The OITP noted that the E-rate has become so complex that it is almost impossible for the typical school or library to be 100 percent accurate in the application and invoicing processes and asserted that the FCC therefore needs to consider the difference between intentional fraud and errors due to program complexity. Second, the OITP suggested that the training of firms to conduct audits is insufficient, as it is commonly understood that it takes an applicant three years and two complete application cycles to grasp the very basics of the program, while firms are reportedly trained in less than three days.

In a separate issue, ALA filed comments in response to an FCC Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on adding services to its Eligible Services List. ALA acknowledged the FCC’s commitment to helping libraries and schools in tough economic times but encouraged them to consider how the proposed new services support the program’s stated purpose: “to provide access to advanced telecommunications and information services.”

The FY2009 budget represented the opportunity to fully focus and move forward on the implementation of the ALA Ahead to 2010 strategic plan after transitioning from ALAhead 2005. The various units within ALA positioned their FY 2009 budget activity to address the expanded key action areas, the ALA Ahead to 2010 Goals, as well as, the ALA Organizational Goals.

The financial plan was developed with four strategic directions necessary to fund the current operations and the future programs/services the membership requires. The four evolving strategies include:

1. Year three of the dues increase. 2. Support from corporations, foundations and government entities. 3. Realignment of existing operating expenses to increase efficiency. 4. Invest in and develop net revenue generating product/service offerings that support member priorities and identify opportunities to expand the market base.

ALA’s long-range financial plan specifically consists of the following assumptions:

1. A stable personal membership level and enhanced benefits associated with organizational membership. 2. FY 2009 Financial Results

Summary of Operations—Total ALA (All Funds) For the fiscal year 2009, ALA generated total revenues of $54.2 million, which is a decline of $3.6 million (-6.2%) over FY2008. The biggest change was in Meetings & Conferences which declined by $2.4 million (-18.8%) to $10.5 million. This was due primarily to having only one national division conference during the year as compared to two in FY08. Also contributing was a decline in advertising which impacted all publishing related activities and was a direct reaction to the slowing economy. Advertising declined by $1.3 million (-20.6%) to $4.9 million, primarily in Booklist/Links ($371,172), American Libraries ($380,700) and ACRL/Choice ($326,039). Contributions also declined during the year by $601,827 (33.9%) to $1.2 million. These declines were slightly offset by gains in investment income ($452,929), subscriptions ($260,680) and other ($252,110).

Total expenses for the year declined by $998,786 (-1.8%) to $54.8 million with the most significant decline occurring in travel ($1.1 million or -28.2%) related to conference, grant administration activity and outside services ($909,533 or -9.5%) where fewer outside contractors were used in performing work in Publishing and ITTS. These declines were offset by an increase in payroll related expenses of $1.1 million (5.7%) to $21.1 million.

As a result total ALA, net operating income, which does not include Postretirement expenses ($1.3 million), was $683,102. This is a decline of $2.6 million (-79.4%) over FY2008.

General Fund Revenues for fiscal 2008 totaled $27.0 compared to $28.0 million in fiscal 2008. This represents a decrease of $1.1 million (-3.8%) year to year. The reduction was primarily in Publishing, of $1.2 million (-11.5%) to $9.2 million as it faced one of the industry’s toughest year’s in reaction to a slowing economy. The declines were in in American Libraries ($317,936), ALA Editions ($226,815) and Booklist/Booklinks ($299,051), while Products & Promotions was down ($396,837) due to lower sales. The decline in publishing revenue was offset by gains in dues ($147,630), related to the final year of a phased in dues increase, interest & dividends ($300,025) on improved asset allocation in the portfolio resulting in higher yielding securities and miscellaneous ($226,189), primarily royalties.

Expenses declined by $592,126 (-2.2%) to $26.8 million. The decline, both functionally and activity wise, was related primarily to publishing. Outside services declined by $688,865 (-16.0%) to $3.6 million. This is directly related to publishing activities being adjusted to better match their use of services i.e. production services, due to lower expected sales during the year. Also contributing in this area was lower usage by ITTS. Travel also declined during the year by $374,771 (-29.5%) to $893,589 as a result of more controlled travel guidelines and holding the Annual Conference in Chicago. The decline in expenses was offset by increases in payroll ($436,529) and general operating ($280,317).

As a result, net revenue for the year was $213,296. This total is $466,849 (-68.6%) less than FY2008. Note that the Midwinter Meeting and the Annual Conference generated $1.2 million in net revenue while Publishing generated net revenues of $921,854 for a total of $2.2 million to support ALA member programs activities.

Long-Term Investment Fund—Endowment The investment balance declined during the year from $31.6 million to $29.4 million. This was a decline of $2.2 million or 7.1% as the market continued its negative reaction to the sub-prime housing, credit/liquidity and global financial crisis. Net realized/unrealized market losses were $3.1 million. These losses were offset by gains in interest & dividends ($942,331), contributions ($323,110), as well as, division transfers ($125,000).

ALA’s portfolio is conservative and defensive in nature. Consequently, the portfolio did not suffer from the unprecedented swings in the stock market as much as other portfolios of similar size. Although there was a significant loss in market value between 9-1-09 and 3-9-09, the market experienced an unprecedented turnaround since through the end of the fiscal year.

Division Fund Division revenues for the year were lower by $2.3 million (-14.2%) to $13.7 million, as there was only one national division conference during the year compared to two in FY08. This was reflected in meetings & conferences revenue, which declined by $2.3 million (-41.4%) to $3.3 million. Offsetting this decline was an increase of $92,870 (1.7%) to $5.5 million in publishing related activity, primarily net advertising which increased by $299,032. Also contributing was a decline in dues of $115,469 (-3.9%) to $2.8 million. The biggest change occurred in PLA, where membership was down by 1,444 members, which is inline with a non-conference year.

Division expense for the year declined by $468,713 (-3.2%) to $14.0 million. The increase was directly related to the number of national conferences held during the year, as reflected in lower meetings and conference/travel expenses. The divisions also transferred a total of $125,000 from their operating fund balances to their long-term investment (endowments) funds.

A final note is that in February of this year FOLUSA transferred its assets to ALTA to form a new division called Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF).

Round Tables Round tables’ revenue declined during the year by $16,743 (-4.4%) to $366,952, while expenses increased by $48,181 (16.9%) to $332,867. The result was a decline in net revenue of $64,024 (-65.6%) to $34,085. All of the round tables ended the year with a positive net asset balance which totaled $804,354.

Plant Fund The Plant Fund consists of building operations and maintenance expenses and depreciation for the headquarters buildings at 40 and 50 East Huron Street and the Washington Office. Operating expenses related to cleaning services, insurance, accounting and administrative services totaled to $1.3 million, while depreciation related expenses increased/declined slightly to $447,012. The result was a general fund plant fund transfer of $1.7 million, which is slightly more than in FY08.

ALA-APA The ALA-APA reported revenues of $154,703 compared to $171,469 in fiscal 2008. This represents a decline of $16,766 (-10.8%). Most of the change is a direct result of lower than expected contributions, which declined by 8,576 (-60.4%) to $14,203, as well as, a decline in the sale of materials of $7,026 (-23.9%) to $29,431 related to the sale of fewer 2008 Non-MLS and Librarian Salaries surveys. Subscriptions for the year were relatively steady declining by $3,310 (-3.7%) to $90,469.

Total expenses declined during the year by $20,620 (-12.1%) to $169,947. Publication expenses declined by $15,998 (-159.1%) to $10,056. Also contributing to the decline was salary/benefits due to redistribution of where the Director's position and the administrative assistant’s position. The balance of each positions time was moved to support the IMLS grant activities in the Office of Research and Statistics and HRDR respectively.

As a result of the above activities the year ended with net loss of ($15,244) compared to a loss of ($19,098) in FY08 resulting in a negative net asset balance of ($263,671).

Statement of Financial Position—Total ALA (All Funds) Total Assets For fiscal 2009 the Association’s total assets declined marginally by $844,689 (-1.2%) to $67.1 million. The reduction occurred in cash and investments, which was down by $3.5 million (-16.8%) to $17.6 million. Most of the change was directly related to the net purchase/sale of securities ($1.3 million) and acquiring property, plant and equipment ($2.5 million). Another significant decline occurred in long-term investments—see above under Long-Term Investments—as market conditions severely deteriorated between 9/08 and 2/09 due to a worldwide financial crisis. These declines were offset by an increase in grants receivable of $2.5 million (288.1%) to $3.3 million. Also contributing was new property, plant and equipment, which increased $2.2 million (19.5%) to $13.7 million related to the CHOICE property purchase.

Total Liabilities Total liabilities for the year increased by $5.8 million (16.8%) to $40.6 million. Changes occurred in a number of categories. The biggest change occurred in postretirement benefits, which increased by $4.2 million (35.7%) to $15.9 million. The change is a direct result of a reduction in the discount rate for expected investment returns by the actuaries from 7.0% in FY 2008 to 5.7% in FY 2009. This is a non- cash impact on the financial statements, but does represent a growing liability that is under review by the Board and senior management in order to constrain the growth.

Long–term debt also increased during the year by $1.8 million (63.5%) to $4.7 million primarily as a result of the CHOICE property purchase. Deferred revenue increased by $938,075 (6.7%) to $14.8 million as a result of increased conference registrations ($159,356) and grants & awards ($797,270). One major offset to the increases was a decline in accounts payable of $1.1 million (-23.7%) to $3.6 million related to the timing related to processing of an ACH payroll in FY08 compared to FY09 and the recognition of discounts offered on early payments.

Net Asset Balances As a result of the above, net assets for the year declined by $6.7 million (-20.1%) to $26.5 million. The biggest impact was from and increase in liabilities related to postretirement benefits—a non-cash event—which increased by $4.2 million, as well as, an increase in long-term debt of $1.8 million.

Total ALA FY10 Budgeted Revenues

Dues Total dues revenue of $9,244,588 includes the categories for personal, organizational, corporate and dues for the Divisions and Roundtables. Dues revenue represents 16.9% of total ALA revenues as compared to 15.7% last year. This is the first year of the fully phased-in three year dues increase. Regular members are expected to be relatively flat with a slight increase in the number of student and support staff members. The number of Trustees and friends are expected to increase due to promotions planned by ALTAFF and membership Development. The membership marketing effort will include personalized member benefits, special promotion of organizational member, expansion of student chapters and student membership.

Publishing Association-wide publishing revenues of $17,777,150 represent 32.5% of total ALA revenue. Revenue sources in this area consists of advertising, subscriptions and the sale of books and other materials. The focus for the Publishing department during the year will be to maximize the rapidly changing opportunities in traditional market channels, enhance the strategic analysis of marketing and production trends, as well as, continuing the rollout and development efforts in the areas of electronic product delivery such as Booklist Online, the JobLIST product, RDA Online and AL Direct etc. Publishing activities also include magazine publications, product promotion and book sales.

Products and Promotions (Graphics) Products & Promotions (Graphics) revenue of $1,983,929 is derived from the promotion of libraries, reading and literacy. Revenue results from the sale of posters, pamphlets, reading materials, bookmarks etc. Graphics will build upon its Celebrity READ campaign and characters, its digital READ CD materials and its Division/Office partnerships. This category represents 3.6% of total ALA revenues.

Grants and Awards Grants and Awards revenue continues to be an important revenue category for the Association at $8,169,503. Grants and Awards include significant projects such as the Gates Sustaining Library Symposium, NEH Perfect Union, Gates Fund Technology Access Study, Dollar General to name a few. Member and community needs, programming efforts and support for the Scholarship Bash are also reflected. Funding represents $887,269 of overhead recovered by the General Fund. Grants account for 14.9% compared to 17.7% of total ALA revenues last year.

Meetings and Conference Meetings & conferences revenue of $13,065,342 includes registration, exhibit space rental, meal functions and program advertising, as well as, donations associated with conference activities. This category comprises 23.9.% of total ALA revenue. AASL and PLA will each hold national conferences during the year. The ALA Midwinter Meeting (Boston) and Annual Conference (Washington, DC) are also scheduled for the year.

Long-Term Investments (Interest Income) This represents revenue of $1,350,131 generated from interest and dividends earned on ALA's operating cash and long-term investments (endowment fund). This income represents 2.5% of total revenue.

Miscellaneous This category includes revenue of $5,156,816 from donations, various fees and royalties and accounts for 9.4% of the Association's total revenue.

Payroll and Related In addition to salaries and benefits for 301 full time employees (FTE's), tuition reimbursement and professional memberships are also included. Payroll and related expenses of $22,076,286 account for over 40.6% of total ALA expenses.

Outside Services This expense category of $6,536,408 includes legal/bank/audit fees, outside temporary help, professional consulting services, messenger services and outside duplication costs. These costs make up 12.0% of total ALA expenses.

Travel and Related Transportation, lodging, meals, entertainment and business meetings expenses of $3,646,660 comprises 6.7% of ALA's total expenses. Conference related travel is included in this category.

Meetings and Conference Facilities and equipment rental, speakers expenses, awards, security services, bus transportation and program allocations awarded to program units are included which accounts for $7,141,904 for 13.1% of total ALA expenses. Publishing and Related Publishing revenues of $5,696,026 represents 35.4% of total division income. Advertising, Sale of Materials and Subscriptions comprise publishing revenues which are net of commissions on advertising income.

Meetings and Conference Revenues of $5,341,234 includes registration, exhibit space rental and meal functions. This revenue comprises 33.2% of total division revenues. Division national conference revenue for AASL and PLA meetings are reflected.

Miscellaneous Miscellaneous revenue of $1,969,605 includes revenue for royalties, miscellaneous fees and accounts for 12.3% of the divisions' total income.

Payroll and Related This category covers salaries and benefits for 87.95 full time employees (FTE's), tuition reimbursement and professional memberships. Payroll and related expenses account for 36.2% of total division expenses.

Outside Services Professional service expenses of $1,401.321 includes temporary help, repairs and maintenance on equipment and outside duplication services costs make up 8.5% of total division expenses.

Travel and Related Travel and related expenses of $895,585 includes transportation, lodging, meals, entertainment and business meetings comprise 5.5% of division expenses. Annual and Midwinter conference travel for division staff is not included.

Meetings and Conference Expenses of $2,179,709 includes meal functions, facilities and equipment rental, speakers expenses, awards, security services, bus transportation and program allocations awarded to divisions are included which account for 13.3% of total division expenses. Cost in this category are associated with pre and post conference, seminars, workshops etc.. Staff cost are not included in this category.

Publication Related Publication costs of $1,900,510 are associated with publishing periodicals, books and magazines such as editorial, typesetting, printing, binding, design, paper, and copyright fees are included. Also space and direct advertising, mail list rental, supplies and mail service are included. Staff costs are not included here, but are in the Payroll and Related expense category. This category accounts for 11.6% of division expenditures.

Operating Expenses Operating expenses of $2,192,422 includes supplies, periodicals, insurance, small equipment purchases/rental and office rent for the Choice operation, telephone, utilities, postage, production services, depreciation, interest and bad debt expense and taxes. All charge backs to divisions are included in this category such as such as production services, marketing, data processing, reprographics, postage and order billing. Also included is the small division support. Category accounts for 13.4% of total division expenses.

Overhead Overhead expenses of $1,896,562 are based on the ALA composite rate of 24.0%, divisions are charged 50% of the rate on publications related revenue or 12.0% and 100% on conference related or 24.0% Total overhead charges represent 11.6% of total division expenses.

We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball, published by Disney–Jump at the Sun, offers a narrated nonfiction account of the rise and decline of the Negro Leagues. Divided into innings, the narrator’s conversational tone informs the reader of the hardships, camaraderie, and joy of playing baseball. “Nelson’s evocative third-person narrative informs today’s readers of the issues African American baseball players faced prior to the 1950s,” said jury chair Carole McCollough.

In The Blacker the Berry, published by Amistad, Cooper uses an oil-wash-subtraction technique to portray the diversity of African American children in this uplifting poetry collection by written by Joyce Carol Thomas. From cover to cover, Cooper’s effective use of sunlight and moonlight illuminates the faces of children as they exalt in the natural world. “Cooper’s soft realistic style complements Joyce Carol Thomas’ celebration of the range of skin color in the African American community,” McCollough said. “Each child’s individuality is beautifully and respectfully shown in rich skin tones ranging from deep brown to raspberry black to cranberry red.”

Shadra Strickland, illustrator of Bird, won the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award, which is awarded only occasionally and offers visibility to a children’s book creator at the beginning of his or her career. In Bird, written by Zetta Elliott and published by Lee and Low Books, Strickland uses a range of media from pencil and charcoal to watercolor and gouache to depict a difficult time in the life of a young boy nicknamed Bird. Two styles of art—the illustrator’s nuanced mixed media and the main character’s pencil sketches—soar together as one.

Michael L. Printz Award

Melina Marchetta won the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature for Jellicoe Road. In the novel, 17-year-old Taylor Markham reluctantly leads the students of the Jellicoe School in their secret territory wars against the Townies and the Cadets. Australian landscape in a suspenseful tale of raw emotion, romance, humor and tragedy. The annual award for literary excellence is administered by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) and sponsored by Booklist magazine. The award, first given in 2000, is named for the late Topeka, Kansas, school librarian, who was known for discovering and promoting quality books for young adults.

Robert F. Sibert Medal

Kadir Nelson, author of We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball, won the 2009 Robert F. Sibert Medal for the most distinguished informational book for children published in the previous year. This fascinating and well-documented history of Negro League Baseball, told in the voice of an “everyman” narrator, features dignified, riveting full-page illustrations that capture the spirit of the larger-than-life men who loved the game in spite of the prejudice they faced. The book is published by Disney–Jump at the Sun.

“Kadir Nelson’s eight years of research score a grand slam in his rookie writing effort,” said Sibert chair Carol K. Phillips. “This history of the Negro League entices fans and non-fans alike. His stunning oil paintings, based on archival photographs, illustrate grace, pride, and discipline far beyond what words alone might convey.” The Sibert Medal is awarded by the ALSC.

Margaret A. Edwards Award

Laurie Halse Anderson, won theMargaret A. Edwards Award for significant and lasting contribution to writing for young adults for her novels Catalyst, Fever and Speak. Through various settings, time periods, and circumstances, Anderson’s gripping and exceptionally well-written novels poignantly reflect the growing and changing realities facing teens. Iconic and classic in her storytelling and character development, Anderson has created for teens a body of work that continues to be widely read and cherished by a diverse audience. The Margaret A. Edwards Award is presented by YALSA and sponsored by School Library Journal. Established in 1988, the award is named for Margaret Edwards, a pioneer in young adult services who worked for many years at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore.

Alex Awards

The Alex Awards are given annually to 10 books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults. The 2009 winners are: City of Thieves by David Benioff, The Dragons of Babel by Michael Swanwick, Finding Noufby Zoë Ferraris, The Good Thief by Hannah Tinti, Just After Sunset: Stories by Stephen King, Mudboundby Hillary Jordan, Over and Under by Todd Tucker, The Oxford Project, written by Stephen G. Bloom and photographed by Peter Feldstein, Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow, and Three Girls and Their Brother by Theresa Rebeck.

Pura Belpré Award

Margarita Engle, author of The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba’s Struggle for Freedom (Henry Holt), won the 2009 Pura Belpré Award for narrative, and Yuyi Morales, illustrator and author of Just in Case (Roaring Book Press), was the 2009 medal winner for illustration.

Engle’s hauntingly beautiful free-verse prose breathes life into this finely crafted story that illuminates Cuba’s fight for independence from Spain in the 1800s. Told from the perspective of four distinct voices, Engle intricately weaves a harrowing, heart-wrenching story of enslavement, survival, determination and heroism. “Engle’s prose breathes life into each character, and her rich use of language catapults the reader into the jungles of Cuba,” said committee chair Claudette McLinn.

Morales’ vibrant, shimmering jewel-tone colors masterfully capture the exuberant and playful story of Señor Calavera’s quest to find the perfect birthday gift for Grandma Beetle. Part ghost story, part trickster tale, the book features motifs from Mexican culture that represent each letter of the Spanish alphabet. “Morales infuses humor with a bold and rich palette of color in this delightful, imaginative story to whimsically bring this intergenerational story to life,” McLinn said.

The Pura Belpré Award, named for the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library, is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. It is cosponsored by the ALSC and the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking (REFORMA).

Stonewall Book Awards

ALA’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Round Table named the winners of the 2009 Stonewall Book Awards. Evan Fallenberg, author of Light Fell (Soho Press), won the Barbara Gittings Literature Award, and William N. Eskridge Jr., author of Dishonorable Passions: Sodomy Laws in America, 1861–2003 (Viking), won theIsrael Fishman Non-Fiction Award.

Author-illustrator Mo Willems was the recipient of the 2009 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for his book Are You Ready to Play Outside? (Hyperion Books for Children). Administered by the ALSC, the Geisel Award is given annually to the author and illustrator of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year.

Willems’s masterpiece is simply told through the use of dialogue, which melds perfectly with uncluttered pink and gray cartoon-style illustrations. Aside from the friendship theme that appears throughout Willems’s work, he continues to create astonishing emotional depth using the simplest of facial expressions on his characters. Are You Ready to Play Outside? tracks Piggie’s changing feelings about rainy weather and Gerald’s heroic efforts to help her grapple with her disappointments in a satisfying story arc.

“Mo Willems’s easily approachable text, captured in dialogue balloons, and bold, expressive drawing of friends Piggie and Gerald experiencing the ups and downs of a rainy day deliver laughter and love of story to beginning readers,” said committee chair Joan Atkinson.

Schneider Family Book Awards

The Schneider Family Book Awards honor an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.

Piano Starts Here: The Young Art Tatum, written and illustrated by Robert Andrew Parker and published by Schwartz and Wade Books, won the award for the young children’s category. Jazz musician Art Tatum, who was born with limited vision and lost much of it as he grew, never felt sorry for himself. In this fictionalized biography, children learn that Tatum often forgot that “his eyes weren’t good” as he gave himself to his music because “with his piano, he had everything he needed.” Parker’s illustrations have movement and a musical lilt that flow easily and pay respect to a true American icon.

Waiting for Normal by Leslie Connor was the winner in the middle-school category. Addie has spent most of her 12 years waiting for “normal,” a stable family and a real home. Connor’s resilient heroine uses humor, creativity, and her “love of learning” to compensate for her dyslexia.Through music andgood friends, Addie discovers that she can accomplish anything. Waiting for Normal is published by HarperCollins Children’s Books.

Jerk, California, written by Jonathan Friesen and published by Speak, was the winner in the teen category. After graduating from high school, Sam/Jack begins a cross-country quest to learn the truth about his dead father and embraces his inherited Tourette syndrome. With the help of an old family friend, a quirky car, and a girlfriend who has troubles of her own, he finds his way to maturity.

Sophie Brody Award

Peter Manseau won the 2009 Sophie Brody Award for Songs for the Butcher’s Daughter (Free Press). The narrator, an American Catholic translator, tells the colorful story of an elderly Yiddish poet, covering a century of events in Israel, Poland, Russia, and the United States. The interwoven stories are a tour de force of writing styles demonstrating the power of passion and commitment to Jewish culture. The award is named for Sophie Brody, a philanthropist and community volunteer who held major leadership positions in the Jewish community. Administered by the Reference and User Services Association and funded by Arthur Brody and the Brodart Foundation, the award is given to encourage, recognize, and commend outstanding achievement in Jewish literature.

May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture Award

Walter Dean Myers, a two-time Newbery Honor and five-time Coretta Scott King Award winner, delivered the 2009 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture on April 18. The lecture was hosted by the Langston Hughes Library of Children’s Defense Fund Haley Farm, in Clinton, Tennessee. Administered by the ALSC, the award is given annually to an individual of distinction in the field of children’s literature. The awardee is chosen to write and deliver a lecture that will make a significant contribution to the world of children’s literature.

Mildred L. Batchelder Award

Arthur A. Levine Books was the winner of the 2009 Mildred L. Batchelder Award for the most outstanding children’s book originally published in a foreign language and subsequently translated into English for publication in the United States. The winning book, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, was written by Nahoko Uehashi and translated from the Japanese by Cathy Hirano. The book tells the story of Balsa, a skilled female warrior who accepts the task of protecting a young prince from otherworldly demons and his father’s assassins. Prince Chagum is the Moribito, the guardian of the sacred spirit. The country will suffer years of devastating drought unless Balsa is successful in protecting the prince, so together they must find the strength they need to prevail. The award honors Mildred L. Batchelder, a former ALSC executive director, and is administered by the ALSC.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Award

Ashley Bryan is the recipient of the 2009 Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal honoring an author or illustrator, published in the United States, whose books have made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children. The award is administered by the ALSC and is

“For 40 years and nearly as many books, Ashley Bryan has filled children’s literature with the beats of story, the echoes of poetry, the transcendence of African-American spirituals, the beauty of art and the satisfaction of a tale well-told,” said Wilder Committee Chair Cathryn Mercier. “Generations of readers have seen themselves in the pages of Bryan’s books. He has inspired today’s children’s book writers and illustrators to tell, paint, sing, and weave their own stories for generations to come.”

William C. Morris Award

A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce was the winner of the inaugural William C. Morris YA Debut Award for the best book written for teens by a previously unpublished author. This supernatural novel retells the story of Rumpelstiltskin, setting it at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution and centering it around the life of Charlotte Miller. When the bank wants to repossess her mortgaged mill, Charlotte strikes a bargain with the mysterious Jack Spinner, a creature who knows the art of turning straw into gold, but then discovers she must free her loved ones from a generations-old curse. The award’s namesake is an influential innovator in the publishing world and an advocate for marketing books for children and young adults. Morris was beloved in the publishing field and the library profession for his generosity and enthusiasm for promoting literature for children and teens.

Odyssey Awards

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, written and narrated by Sherman Alexie and produced by Recorded Books, was the 2009 winner of the Odyssey Award. Co-administered by YALSA and the ALSC, the award honors the best audiobook produced for children and young adults in the previous year. With equal doses of humor and pathos, Alexie’s lilting narration places listeners squarely in 14-year-old Spokane Indian Arnold Spirit’s shoes as he expands his world beyond the reservation to attend a predominantly white high school. Alexie’s pitch-perfect voicing and dead-on pacing capture Arnold’s struggles.

Honorary Membership

ALA conferred a special posthumous Honorary Membership at the 2009 Annual Conference on Judith F. Krug, who served as director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom and executive director of the Freedom to Read Foundation for more than 40 years, until her death in April 2009.

Krug was the founder of ALA’s Banned Books Week and was involved in multiple First Amendment cases that have gone all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. She was the recipient of many awards, including the Joseph P. Lippencott Award, the Irita Van Doren Award, the Harry Kalven Freedom of Expression Award, and the William J. Brennan Jr. Award.

Honorary membership is usually given to a living citizen of any country whose contribution to librarianship or a closely related field is so outstanding that it is of lasting importance to the advancement of the whole field of library service. The honor was bestowed on Krug posthumously upon the recommendation of the ALA Executive Board and by vote of the ALA Council.

Joseph W. Lippincott Award

Beverly P. Lynch, professor at the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies and director of the University of California–Los Angeles Senior Fellows Program and the California Rare Book School, was the 2009 recipient of the Joseph W. Lippincott Award. Lynch has served in various leadership positions and has made a remarkable personal commitment to providing widespread service to libraries, educational programs, and the profession. The award, founded in 1938, is given annually to an individual for distinguished service to the profession of librarianship.

James Madison Award

Thomas M. Susman, director of the American Bar Association’s Government Affairs Office, was the winner of the 2009 James Madison Award, which honors those who, at the national level, have championed, protected, and promoted public access to government information. ALA President Jim Rettig said Susman, who practiced with the D.C. law firm Ropes and Gray for 27 years before being named to his current position at the ABA in 2008, has shown a long commitment to the cause of open access to government information. “Tom has stood shoulder to shoulder with our nation’s librarians in our efforts to make government information available to the public and our long, historic fights to protect library patrons’ privacy,” Rettig said.

SirsiDynix–ALA-APA Awards

The ALA-Allied Professional Association honored the Anderson County (Tenn.) Library Board; Lynn Sutton, at Wake Forest University Library in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and Mohamed Ismail, of the Integrated Care Society in Cairo, Egypt, as winners of the SirsiDynix–ALA­ APA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Promoting Salaries and Status for Library Workers. The Anderson County board received $2,000 for its successful campaign to boost salaries for library workers at every level, while Sutton and Ismail each received $1,500—Sutton for improving pay for librarians and library workers, revising job descriptions, and reviewing personnel classification schedules; and Ismail for increasing the monthly salaries of Egyptian librarians at 23 different libraries from 84 to 1,300 Egyptian pounds (a 1450 percent increase) and establishing a salary scale

and incentive system used by most of the country’s public libraries. Leigh Estabrook, dean emerita at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, and ALA-APA Salaries and Status of Library Workers Committee members Pamela Wilson, Jonathan Harwell, and Patricia Anderson also received special recognition for their work toward better salaries for library employees.

10 librarians receive I Love My Librarian Awards

In the first year of the Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award, 10 librarians each received a $5,000 cash award at a ceremony and reception December 9, 2008. Administered by ALA’s Public Information Office and Campaign for America’s Libraries, the award encourages library users to recognize the accomplishments of librarians in public, school, college, community college, and university libraries for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their communities. More than 3,200 library users nationwide nominated a librarian. In 2008, Carnegie Corporation of New York awarded ALA $489,000 to support the award for five years.

Scholastic Library Publishing National Library Week Grant

The Moline (Ill.) Public Library won the 2009 Scholastic Library Publishing National Library Week Grant for using the Worlds connect @ your library theme to reflect the diversity of its city, where more than 50 languages are spoken by the 46,000 residents. Each event during the week featured a different themed program: a visit from Skylab, a traveling planetarium, author appearances by Chris Crutcher and James Loewen, and a jazz appreciation program for adults. In the spring, the library advertised on the city’s Metrolink buses and created a commercial that aired on three local ABC–TV affiliates throughout National Library Week. The grant is awarded annually to a single U.S. library that creates the best public awareness campaign using the National Library Week theme.

ALTAFF recognizes top trustees

The Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF) named Shirley Ann Bruursema and David H. Goldsmith as the 2009 winners of the Trustee Citation award, established in 1941 to recognize public library trustees for distinguished service to library development. The award symbolizes and honors the best contributions and efforts of the estimated 60,000 Americans who serve on library boards.

Bruursema is chairperson of the Kent (Mich.) District Library and president of the board of directors of the Michigan Library Association’s Trustees and Advocates Division. As a member of the Association for Library Trustees and Advocates (now ALTAFF), she served as president, division councilor, executive board member, Shirley Ann Bruursema David H. Goldsmith chair of the National Honor Roll Banquet, regional vice president, and member of the budget and legislation committees. Goldsmith served on the Prince George’s County (Md.) Memorial Library board for 17 years and after moving to Baltimore County was appointed to the board of the Baltimore County Public Library, where he has served since 1995. He served as vice-president and president of both boards. He has been a member of the Association for Library Trustees and Advocates for 30 years and has served on ALTA’s board as a regional vice- president, as well as on several committees.

ALTAFF honors five Friends groups

Five Friends of the Library groups were recognized by ALTAFF and Baker and Taylor. Each group received a $1,000 check and an engraved plaque to honor its achievements. The five groups were Friends of the Florence County (S.C.) Library, Friends of the San Benito County (Calif.) Free Library, Friends of the Orangevale (Calif.) Library, Friends of the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Public Library, and Friends of Henderson (Nev.) Libraries.

Sen. Barbara Boxer honored for work to keep EPA libraries open

ALTAFF gave its 2009 Public Service Award to Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) during ALA’s National Library Legislative Day in May 2009. Boxer was noted for her lead to stave off a proposed closure of the Environmental Protection Agency’s libraries. Her work to keep the EPA libraries open ensures that the public has access to their collections at a time when the United States and the rest of the world face challenges to protect the environment.

Outstanding school library programs win AASL awards

In 2009, the American Association of School Librarians recognized programs in three schools with its National School Library Media Program of the Year Award: Livonia (N.Y.) Central School District; Robert E. Clow Elementary School in Naperville, Illinois; and Blue Valley North High School in Overland Park, Kansas. Established in 1963, the award recognizes exemplary school library programs that are fully integrated into the school’s curriculum. Each winning program receives $10,000 from award sponsor Follett Library Resources.

ACRL honors top librarian, institutions

In 2009, 22 outstanding individuals and institutions received Association of College and Research Libraries awards recognizing their accomplishments. The ACRL’s top honor, the Academic/Research Librarian of the Year Award, was presented to Gloriana St. Clair for her contributions to academic and research librarianship, in particular her record of scholarship and scholarly contributions. The award, sponsored by the ACRL and YBP Library Services, was presented during the opening keynote session of the ACRL 14th National Conference.

This year’s recipients were the Moraine Valley Community College Library in Palos Hills, Illinois, in the community college category; Wyndham Robertson Library at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia, in the college category; and the library of the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities, in the university category. The award, sponsored by the ACRL and Blackwell’s Book Services, included a presentation ceremony on the campus of the award-winning library.

ALCTS awards

Cindy Hepfer, electronic resources librarian at the University at Buffalo in New York, became the third recipient of the Ross Atkinson Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services and sponsored by EBSCO. Ann Russell, retired director of the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, Massachusetts, received the Cunha/Swartzberg Preservation Award, sponsored by LBI: the Library Binding Institute, for distinguished contributions to preservation. Brian Green, director of the international ISBN Agency, won the Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award for outstanding achievement in serials librarianship.

ALSC honors Madison, Ohio, summer reading program

Madison (Ohio) Public Library was the recipient of the 2009 ALSC/BWI Summer Reading Program Grant for its 2009 summer reading program “Be Creative @ Your Library.” During each week of the six-week program, children focused on a different artistic form, such as patterns and percussion for the preschoolers and textiles and sculpture for the school-age children. The $3,000 grant is donated by Book Wholesalers Inc.

Jane Botham receives ALSC service award

The 2009 ALSC Distinguished Service Award winner was Jane Botham, an ALSC member since 1957. Botham received her MLS from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Library and Information Science, then went on to work at the New York Public Library, the San Francisco Public Library, the New York State Library, and the Milwaukee Public Library; she retired in 1998. Botham has served on numerous ALSC and ALA committees and served a term as ALSC President.

ASCLA awards and honors

The Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies presented the 2009 Francis Joseph Campbell Award to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, recognizing his leadership and advocacy benefiting the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped digital talking books transition. The ASCLA/Keystone Library Automation System (KLAS)/National Organization on Disability Award went to Margaret Kolaya, director of the Scotch Plains Public Library, and Daniel Weiss, director of the Fanwood Memorial Library, both in New Jersey, for the development of “Libraries and Autism: We’re Connected.”

LLAMA awards

The Library Leadership and Management Association’s mentoring committee received the LLAMA Group Achievement award for its work piloting a highly successful program offering opportunities for LLAMA members to serve as mentors and to be mentored. The Diana V. Braddom FRFDS (Fund Raising and Financial Development) Scholarship was given to Alicia A. Antone, director of development for university libraries at the University of Florida. The Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award—jointly sponsored by LLAMA, the Association of College and Research Libraries, the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, and the Library and Information Technology Association—was awarded to Ray English of Oberlin College, Ohio. And LLAMA sponsored two emerging leaders: Jennifer Falkowski of the Southern Maryland Regional Library Association in Charlotte Hall, Maryland, and Emily Symonds of the University of Louisville in Kentucky.

Three win Diversity Research Grant awards

Three research proposals in the 2009 round of the annual Diversity Research Grant program each won a $2,500 award: “Library and Information Center Accessibility: The Differently-able Patron’s Perspective,” by Clayton Copeland, University of South Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science; “Bringing the Library to the People: Addressing the Job Related Information Needs of Day Laborers,” by graduate Diana Tedone and master’s candidate Zoe Jarocki from the University of California–Los Angeles Department of Information Studies; and “ICT Readiness Index: Measuring the Preparedness of Libraries to Serve Patrons With Disabilities in the Context of Economic Challenge,” by Stephanie Maatta Smith, University of South Florida’s School of Library and Information Science, and Laurie J. Bonnici and Muriel K. Wells, of the University of Alabama. The Office for Diversity began sponsorship of the program in 2002 to address critical gaps in the knowledge of diversity issues within library and information science and as part of ALA’s continuing commitment to diversity.

PLA awards and honors

The Public Library Association recognized individuals, programs, and libraries through its annual awards, grants, and scholarships. Given this year were the Advancement of Literacy Award, the Allie Beth Martin Award, the Baker & Taylor Entertainment Audio Music/Video Product Award Grant, the Charlie Robinson Award, the DEMCO New Leaders Travel Grant, the EBSCO Excellence in Small and/or Rural Public Library Service Award, the Gordon M. Carroll Academy for International Studies wins Sara Jaffarian Award

The library of the Carroll Academy for International Studies in Houston was selected as the winner of the 2009 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming, presented by the Public Programs Office in cooperation with the AASL.

Sally Rasch, librarian at Carroll Academy, developed and submitted the winning program, entitled “Learning about the World with a Global Perspective.” Working with the Carroll Academy’s curriculum requirements on international studies, the library’s “Learning about the World” program offered students a creative, hands-on study of world regions, languages, governments and the immigration experience. Named for a retired school librarian who has been an ALA member for 63 years, the Sara Jaffarian Award was established in 2006 to recognize and promote excellence in humanities programming in elementary and middle school (K-8) libraries. The $4,000 award was presented in July during the Auditorium Speaker Series presentation of Gregory Maguire at the 2009 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.

RUSA’s notable books and reading list

The Reference and User Services Association announced its 2009 Notable Books and the second annual list of winners for the 2009 Reading List. The Notable Books Council makes available a list of 25 very good, very readable, and at times very important fiction, nonfiction, and poetry books for the adult reader. The complete list of titles for 2009 is available on line. The 2009 Reading List, a juried list of titles selected by readers’ advisory and collection development experts, represents the best writing in eight adult genre areas currently popular with readers. The 2009 winners included Blue Heaven by C. J. Box, Veil of Gold by Kim Wilkins, The Steel Wave by Jeff Shaara, Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow, The Garden of Evil by David Hewson, The Spymaster’s Lady by Joanna Bourne, Hunter’s Run by George R. R. Martin, and Every Last Cuckoo by Kate Maloy. Again, a complete list is available on line.

RUSA introduces Zora Neale Hurston Award

RUSA honored the life and work of Zora Neale Hurston, a prominent voice in African American literature, with a new award. The Zora Neale Hurston Award recognizes the efforts of a RUSA member who promotes African American literature through a program, readers’ advisory project, or similar efforts in their library community. The award also covers costs to attend the Annual Conference and provides tickets to the Literary Tastes breakfast and other literary events. Sponsored by Harper Perennial Publishing, the award also includes a set of the Zora Neale Hurston books published by Harper Perennial.

Young Adult Library Services Association awards to members included the Baker & Taylor Conference Grant, which went to Kate Toebbe and Laurie Amster-Burton; the 2009 BWI/YALSA Collection Development Grant, which went to Lexie Robinson and Wini Ashooh; the Great Books Giveaway, which gave the Lincoln County (Mont.) Public Libraries more than $20,000 in books, audiobooks, and other materials donated to YALSA in 2008; the YALSA/ VOYA/Frances Henne Research Grant, which was given to Amy Alessio, teen coordinator at the Schaumburg Township (Ill.) District Library and Marc Aronson, author, editor, and blogger for School Library Journal; and the 2009 MAE Award for Best Literature Program for Teens, which went to Valerie H. The Library and Information Technology Association offered one preconference workshop, “User Centered Design for Digital Projects,” presented by Brenda Reeb, of the River Campus Libraries at the University of Rochester (N.Y.). LITA also held its Town Meeting, which built on the strategic thinking sessions from the previous year and gave members a chance to discuss the organization’s role in the larger information, association, community-building, and technology-related landscape. LITA President-elect Michelle Frisque led the meeting, which was facilitated by R2 Consulting’s Matt Barnes.

The Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) held two institutes in conjunction with the meeting: Beth Krommes “Behind the Genealogy Reference Desk” and “ILL—Everything You Always Wanted to Know.”

The Young Adult Library Services Association offered a full-day institute, “Reaching Today’s Diverse Teens,” focusing on how to work with today’s generation of teens, one of the most ethnically diverse in history. Speakers discussed ways to identify all the teens in a service area and suggested interactive, innovative ways to reach them. YALSA also hosted a social event Friday night, a Mixer and Tech Playground with more than 100 attendees coming to sample tech tools such as micro-blogs, social networking sites, virtual reference, and games.

Annual Conference

Almost 29,000 librarians and library supporters attended ALA’s Annual Conference July 9–14, held at the McCormick Place convention center in downtown Chicago. The total of 28,941—the largest on record— included 22,762 attendees and 6,179 exhibitors.

Jim Rettig’s President’s Program focused on the need to restore connections between the federal government and the people. Thomas S. Blanton, director of the National Security Archive at George Washington University, spoke about “The Secrecy Hangover,” discussing the loss of access to government information, evaluating actions of the Obama administration, and writing a prescription for additional actions the federal government

needs to take to provide the sort of access to government information that free people in a democracy deserve.

The keynote at the Opening General Session was delivered by the former CEO and chairman of Playboy Enterprises, Christie Hefner, a passionate advocate of freedom of expression, social justice, and Thomas S. Blanton equal rights and opportunities for women. Steve Lopez, Los Angeles spoke on “The Secrecy Times columnist and author of The Soloist, was the Closing General Hangover.” Session speaker.

At the Opening General Session and throughout the conference, librarians paid tribute to the memories of former ALA president E.J. Josey and Judith Krug, longtime director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom.

Noted journalist and political commentator Cokie Roberts made the keynote presentation at the Christie Hefner delivered the keynote 2009 Public Library Association President’s Program. In addition, the PLA sponsored 20 address. programs and three preconferences.

Chicago proved to be a solid market as well: The Public Information Office secured placements with local print, radio, and television media; interview topics ranged from conference programs to the value of libraries and librarians and the surge in library use during tough economic times. More than 115 reporters and producers were on site, including those from C-SPAN, WGN-TV, the CBS Sunday Morning News, HARPO Radio, Chicago Public Radio, the Pioneer Press, and many other library and education trade press.

An op-ed piece in the Chicago Sun-Times drafted by the PIO on behalf of ALA President Jim Rettig and Chicago Public Library Commissioner Mary Dempsey focused on the resources available in libraries that can help patrons cope with the downturn in the economy. The PIO also secured live in-studio interviews. WGN Radio’s “Noon Show with Bob Sirott” featured Rettig and host Steve Bertrand, who discussed the value of libraries and conference programs, and “The Nick Digilio Show” included a segment with ALA President-Elect Camila Alire that focused on the value of libraries. CLTV, the 24-hour cable news station that reaches 1.5 million households, shadowed “Libraries Build Communities” volunteers as they planted a new garden for the Academy for Global Citizenship School. Rettig and volunteers talked with the news crew about the value of libraries and how librarians and staff make a difference in the communities that they serve.

Participants this year also had the opportunity to attend the conference from their desktops via ALA’s new Virtual Conference. ALA offered 10 interactive Web sessions July 13 and 14 at the closing of the conference in Chicago. Attendees were able to interact with speakers and other attendees during each of these hour-long sessions on a variety of topics. These programs from ALA’s Washington Office, the Office of Intellectual Freedom, and several other offices and divisions covered topics such as accessing stimulus money for broadband deployment, “greening your library,” and best customer service.

And as usual, the Annual Conference was both one large gathering and many small ones at which ALA divisions, offices, and others had an opportunity to showcase their talents and their progress to colleagues from across the nation and beyond.

American Libraries sponsored the Annual Conference Auditorium Speaker Series speech by Wanda Melba Pattillo Beals Urbanska, host of television’s Simple Living. Urbanska urged libraries to stay at the center of change, arguing that they are inherently green because of their role in helping reduce consumption: “Reclaim your role as eco–role models and exemplars in your community,” she said.

For the third year in a row, the Association for Library Service to Children’s Charlemae Rollins President’s Program was part of ALA’s Auditorium Speaker Series. This year’s speaker was Melba Pattillo Beals, one of the original Little Rock Nine who in 1957 faced angry mobs while the U.S. National Guard escorted her into a school that was being integrated for the first time. St. Ailbe’s children’s choir opened the program with songs from the civil rights movement.

Other speakers included authors Tracy Kidder, Gregory Maguire, Steve Lopez, Michael Connelly, James Van Praagh, Lisa Scottoline, Jill Bolte Taylor, and James Ellroy.

At the ALSC Newbery/Caldecott Banquet, more than 1,100 attendees celebrated Newbery Medal winner Neil Gaiman for The Graveyard Book, Caldecott Medal winner Beth Krommes for The House in the Night, and Wilder Medalist Ashley Bryan.

The Coretta Scott King Book Awards celebrated 40 years of honoring the best African American authors and illustrators of books for children and youth. More than 700 people attended the annual Coretta Scott King Book Awards Breakfast to celebrate winners Kadir Nelson, We Are The Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball, and Floyd Cooper, The Blacker the Berry. Shadra Strickland, illustrator of Bird, received the Coretta Scott King–John Steptoe New Talent Award.

YALSA offered a full-day preconference, “Genre Galaxy: Exploring the Universe of Teen Reading,” which focused on various genres for teens, including science fiction, fantasy, nonfiction, mystery, and romance, with sample programs and literacy activities. Notable YA authors appeared, including James Kennedy, Dom Testa, Simone Elkeles, Patrick Jones, Libba Bray, Holly Black, and David Lubar.

More than 60 state-level coordinators from 46 states attended the American Association of School Librarians’ all-day summit,

Training4Trainers (T4T), held to support the development of customized state-level implementation strategies for the AASL’s learning standards and program guidelines. The cost of the all-day summit was partially underwritten by a donation from the Verizon Foundation/Thinkfinity.org.

The Association of College and Research Libraries offered one preconference, “Instructional Design for Librarians: The What, Why, and How of ID,” along with programs “Closing the Gap: Making Information Literacy Seamless Across K-16” and “Bringing the Immersion Program Back Home.”

LITA presented two preconferences: “A Thousand Words: Taking Better Photos for Telling Stories in Your Library” and “Creating Library Web Services: Mashups and APIs.”

The Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies offered two popular preconferences, nine programs, and two special events, covering a range of topics including customer service the Trump Entertainment Resorts way, funding for digitization, major trends in the LibraryServices and Technology Act, the newest trends in physical delivery and large print, revitalizing the library experience, making the most of collaboration and innovation, and career opportunities in correctional libraries.

More than 400 turned out for YALSA’s fashion show and happy hour hosted by Steven Rosengard of the TV show . Disney-Hyperion Books sponsored the sold-out event, which featured YALSA members sporting the latest in library fashion as well a professional makeover.

YALSA’s Edwards Award Luncheon, featuring winner Laurie Halse Anderson, drew more than 220 attendees. The Morris Award Presentation and YA Authors Coffee Klatch featured Elizabeth C. Bunce, winner of the first Morris Award, as well as authors from YALSA’s Quick Picks and Popular Paperbacks lists. The breakfast sold out for the third year in a row; this year’s event limited attendance to 250, with 35 authors moving from table to table and discussing their books with attendees. And 400 people attended the 2009 Printz Program, featuring speeches from winner Melina Marchetta and the four honor book authors.

2009’s “Sunday Afternoon with LITA,” one of ALA’s most popular programming events, began with a Top Technology Trends Panel and culminated with the LITA President’s Program, featuring a keynote address by Erik Boekesteijn of Shanachie Tour fame. Together with colleagues Jaap van de Geer and Geert van den Boogaard, Boekesteijn took off from DOK Deflt Public Library in the Netherlands to tour North American libraries, documenting their trip in search of library innovation and best practices.

The Public Programs Office presented the LIVE! @ your library Reading Stage with a special focus on poetry, offering readings from award-winning, popular, and up-and-coming poets. The National Endowment for the Arts provided funding. Featured authors and poets included Sherman Alexie, Jane Hirshfield, Cristina Henriquez, Marlon James, Ed Bok Lee, and Sara Paretsky. The PPO also hosted an array of well-attended programs to help librarians develop cultural programs for their communities, including “Pride and Passion: The African American Baseball Experience,” “Picturing America in Public Libraries,” “Exciting NASA Materials for Libraries,” “Great Programs with Poets and Poetry,” “PRIME TIME Family Reading Time: A Model Program for Strengthening Families and Building Communities,” and “Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story.”

Five hundred library supporters turned out for a sold-out evening with National Public Radio’s “Wait Wait . . . Don’t Tell Me!” show to raise funds for the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations. The show, which has a weekly listenership of 2.5 million, featured comedian and ALTAFF spokesperson Paula Poundstone, along with fellow panelists Adam Felber and Julia Sweeney, judge and scorekeeper Carl Kassell, and host Peter Sagal. Other sold-out ALTAFF events included a Gala Author Tea and “The Laugh’s On Us!” comedy panel. In addition, Poundstone gave a champagne toast in celebration of ALTAFF at ALA’s Membership Pavilion in the Exhibit Hall.

ALA’s Executive Board approved the establishment of the Library Support Staff Certification program, the first national, voluntary certification program of its kind. Funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the program next moves to a testing phase in five library organizations across the United States.

For the fourth straight year, librarians and library workers made a difference while attending the ALA Annual Conference. One hundred volunteers participated in “Libraries Build Communities,” fanning out ALTAFF to nine schools on the south side of Chicago, where they worked to spokesperson (and spruce up the facilities inside and out and helped the understaffed radio star) Paula school media specialists reorganize and update their collections. Hundreds came together July 10 for the annual Many Voices, One Nation program, which this year featured novelist Nami Mun, author of Miles from Nowhere; spoken-word artist George Watsky; poet, children’s author, and librarian Janice Harrington; playwright, poet, and writer Ed Bok Lee, author of Real Karaoke People; and poet Rachel Zucker, author of The Bad Wife Handbook and creator of “Starting Today: Poems for the First 100 Days.” Attendees also enjoyed performances by Hooked on Drums, an urban youth group performing African djembe drumming. Now in its fifth year, the program brings together writers and artists from different perspectives and presents a rich program of spoken word, music, and performance art that celebrates the many unique cultures sharing one world.

With more than 300 attendees, the 12th Annual Diversity Fair showcased more than 30 participants around the theme of “Service to Older Adults.” The event, organized

by the Office for Literacy and Outreach Services and sponsored by DEMCO, celebrates extraordinary examples of diversity in America’s libraries and demonstrates possibilities for other libraries in search of ‘diversity-in-action” ideas.

For the third year, OLOS and the Subcommittee on Bookmobiles presented the Parade of Bookmobiles. This year’s parade featured 21 vehicles from across the country. The parade provides an opportunity to showcase libraries’ ability to reach rural and other communities where access to library facilities is a challenge.

The 2009 Jean E. Coleman Library Outreach Lecture was presented by Kathleen Mayo, head of outreach services for the Lee County (Fla.) Library System. Mayo’s presentation, “The Challenges and Opportunities of Serving America’s Elders,” examined the American population as it ages and how libraries are responding to the reality of true lifelong learning. The lecture honors the first director of OLOS for her leadership in focusing the association’s attention on issues affecting those traditionally underserved and underrepresented in libraries.

The Association for Library Collections and Technical Services continued a series of meetings on its organizational structure with “Creating Our Future,” a forum attended by 75 members. The series had begun with a facilitated discussion at Midwinter in Denver.

James Cuno, president and director of the Art Institute of Chicago, discussed issues that have caused debate for centuries at the 2009 ALCTS President’s Program, “Who Owns Antiquity? Museums and the Battle over Our Ancient Heritage.” The program was sponsored by Elsevier.

The Office for Intellectual Freedom highlighted its Conversation on Privacy campaign at the program “Privacy in an Era of Change: Privacy and Surveillance Under the New Administration.” Panelists Mary Ellen Callahan, chief privacy officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, David Sobel, senior counsel at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Craig Wacker, program officer for the Digital Media and Learning initiative of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, discussed the delicate balance of privacy, security, and civil liberties in today’s digital age.

A crowd of more than 60 joined the Public and Cultural Programs Advisory Committee and the PPO for a fundraiser to benefit the ALA Cultural Communities Fund at the renowned Steppenwolf Theatre. In addition to raising money for the CCF, an important goal for the evening was to showcase the kind of high-quality arts and humanities programs that the CCF enables libraries to present to their communities. Following a cocktail reception, guests were treated to a high-energy performance of 500 Clown and the Elephant Deal. After the performance, which received a standing ovation, director Leslie Buxbaum Danzig led the crowd in a spirited discussion with the cast and composer.

Booklist events drew good crowds and included the first annual Booklist Online Forum, “Books and Blogs: Made for Each Other?” moderated by Senior Editor Keir Graff with panelists Mary Burkey, John Green, Kaite Mediatore Stover, and Nora Rawlinson. The Booklist Books for Youth Program “Celebrating Abraham Lincoln” featured editor Jean Feiwel and authors Russell Freedman, Candace Fleming, and Deborah Hopkinson, who discussed their books on the 16th president. The Booklist Reference Books Bulletin Editorial Board Program, “Rethinking the Reference Collection,” was a Q&A session moderated by RBB Editorial Board Chair Sue Polanka and featuring Barbara Bibel, reference librarian, Oakland (Calif.) Public Library; Sara Kelly Johns, library media specialist, Lake Placid (N.Y.) Middle/High School; and Dave Tyckoson, associate dean, Henry Madden Library, California State University–Fresno, as panelists.

The RUSA President’s Program, “From the Book and Beyond: Interdisciplinary Readers’ Advisory,” was the inaugural session of the Readers’ Advisory Research and Trends Forum, a new RUSA initiative in which ideas, best practices, and creative possibilities are actively engaged and deconstructed to help advance RA service. Themes included the changes in genre fiction and the DNA implications of reader-driven tagging; speakers were Nora Rawlinson, co- founder and editor of EarlyWord.com and former editor-in-chief of Publishers Weekly; Susan Chun, founder of Steve: The Museum Social Tagging Project; and Nathan Altice, adjunct professor of sound communication at Virginia Commonwealth University.

ALSC Institute draws more than 250 to Salt Lake City

The 2008 Association for Library Service to Children National Institute drew 258 attendees to Salt Lake City, Utah, September 18–20, 2008. The Institute featured three tracks—Technology and Children’s Services, Programming in the New Millennium, and Inspiring Lifelong Reading—and included presentations by nationally known children’s authors and illustrators Laura Vaccaro Seeger, Sharon Creech, William Joyce, and Christopher Paul Curtis. More than 600 librarians, educators, authors, and supporters of young adult literature gathered in Nashville, Tennessee, in November 2008 for the Young Adult Library Services Association’s inaugural Young Adult Literature Symposium, which carried the theme “How We Read Now.” The symposium began with a sold-out preconference on manga and graphic novels that included 2007 Printz Award winner Gene Luen Yang and Dramacon author Svetlana Chmakova; other events included a kickoff session, breakout sessions, a happy hour, and a genre luncheon. After the closing general session, which featured authors Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta, many attendees gathered for a tribute to William C. Morris, whose endowment helped fund the symposium. A second successful ALA TechSource Gaming, Learning, and Libraries Symposium took place in Chicago in November 2008, in collaboration with several divisions and sponsored in part by the Verizon Foundation. Keynote speakers included Andrew Bub of GamerDad; Jon-Paul Dyson, vice president for exhibit research and development and associate curator at the Strong National Museum of Play; Lawrence Kutner, author of Grand Theft Childhood; and Marc Prensky, author of Don't Bother Me Mom, I'm Learning. More than 4,300 library staff, exhibitors, speakers, and guests from every state and 22 countries met in Seattle March 12–15, 2009, for the 14th National Conference of the Association of College and Research Libraries. Combined with the more than 350 people participating online through the ACRL 2009 Virtual Conference, the Seattle conference had the highest combined registrant participation ever for an ACRL National Conference, with 3,263 face-to-face and virtual attendees. The conference offered more than 300 programs that explored the changing nature and roles of academic and research libraries and librarianship. Poster sessions and the second offering of the Cyber Zed Shed also proved popular. PLA 2009 Spring Symposium

Nearly 550 people attended the PLA’s 2009 Spring Symposium, which was held April 2–4, 2009, in Nashville, Tennessee. The symposium featured intensive day-and-a-half-long workshops including Everyday Library Ethics, Service Responses, Assessing the Quality of Public Library Statistics and Making the Most of Them, Today’s Library, New Library Technologies, and Current Library Issues. First LITA Camp is “agenda-light unconference”

In May, more than 50 participants attended the first-ever Library and Information Technology Association Camp, an “agenda-light unconference” based on the increasingly popular “Bar Camps”—open workshops where content is provided by participants. Kickoff speakers Joan Frye Williams and John Blyberg began each “camp” day, but participants determined the topics and formats of the sessions, which included lightning talks on varied topics and “speed-geek” sessions covering user experience and next-generation reference on-site. Sessions were Tweeted by many participants, and outcomes are available on both the LITA Camp wiki and blog. RBMS celebrates 50 years of preconferences

The ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section held its 50th anniversary preconference, “Seas of Change: Navigating the Cultural and Institutional Contexts of Special Collections,” June 17–20, 2009, in Charlottesville, Virginia, the site of the first RBMS preconference. More than 450 attendees gathered for the program, making it the largest event in RBMS history. Programming looked broadly at how special collections librarianship has evolved over the past half-century with respect to changes in social, cultural, technological, economic, and academic environments and—more importantly—the need to respond to such changes in the future. For the 10th straight year, ALA supported a large delegation of U.S. librarians to the Guadalajara Book Fair to interact with Latin American colleagues and review and select Spanish-language materials for their libraries. One hundred and fifty-seven librarians from public, academic, and school libraries were joined by ALA President Jim Rettig and President-elect Camila Alire. President Rettig made a presentation on “New Technologies, Citizen Empowerment, and Civic Life” to a packed audience at the University of Guadalajara Coloquio.

On the road with YALSA

The Young Adult Library Services Association began a new program known as the YALSA Road Trip, in which the division aimed to have a presence at every state library conference. Members volunteered to host booths, present programs (YALSA offered a choice of four prepared presentations), and hold social events for other YALSA members to connect. YALSA also placed low-cost ads in those areas in which YALSA membership is somewhat low.
