ALUMNI AWARD OF DISTINCTION The HSC Alumni Award of Distinction Program celebrates the achievements of alumni in our community who have lived the aspirations of the Hillfield Strathallan College vision, developed into global citizens and bettered the world around them. Criteria: • The story of this person and his or her accomplishments would be an inspiration to HSC students of today. • Excelled in a chosen path and demonstrated an ability to reach his or her full potential. • Seen by others to have demonstrated artistic, intellectual, physical or humanitarian excellence. • Committed to bettering the world around him or her by having made a significant contribution to the HSC community, his or her community of residence, nationally or on a global scale. HALL OF EXCELLENCE The Alumni Hall of Excellence celebrates alumni who embody and promote the ideals of Hillfield Strathallan College. By honouring this distinguished group of alumni, the College continues its tradition of inspiring others through the legacy of alumni who have come before them. Glassco '61 • Established the Colin Glassco Foundation following a successful career in business • The Foundation provides funding for eye clinics, school supplies, clean water, among other projects • The Foundation is now the largest private driller of wells in Zambia, which has resulted in the infection rates among children in the region to drop to less than 10 per cent • The Foundation also provides funding in Canada for underprivileged children in addition to working with Dreams Take Flight to provide trips to Disney World for chronically ill, and/or mentally, physically and emotionally challenged children 2006 Dr. Sheila Singh '90 • Pediatric Neurosurgeon and Canada Research Chair in human stem cell biology • Professor of Surgery and Biochemistry at McMaster University • Through the Terry Fox Frontiers Program Project Grant, she is the first woman to lead a research project of this kind as lead Principal Investigator • Speaks internationally as the Research Director for McMaster’s Division of Neurosurgery 3 ALUMNI AWARDS AWARD OF DISTINCTION & HALL OF EXCELLENCE 2007 Dr. Gail Robinson '60 • Professor of Psychiatry and Obstetrics/Gynecology at the University of Toronto • Co-founder of Canada’s first rape- crisis centre • Assisted in establishing the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario’s task force on physician- patient sexual abuse • Awarded the Order of Ontario in 2013; the YWCA Women of Distinction Award; and was named one of 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada among many other accolades 2008 Mr. Steven H. Paikin '78 • Started his career in journalism and broadcasting at the University of Toronto • After working as an anchor in Queen’s Park, he began work at TVO • Consistent moderator during election debates on both the provincial and federal levels • Named the “Queen’s Park Journalist with the Most Twitter Influence” in 2012 • Made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2013 4 ALUMNI AWARDS AWARD OF DISTINCTION & HALL OF EXCELLENCE 2009 Mr. Ronald S. Bremner '67 • One of Canada’s top executive coaches for over two decades, mentoring others to become the best that they can be • Exceptional athlete in high school, leading to him become the varsity quarterback at the University of Guelph • Elected into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame in 2000 and has had immeasurable influence on the broadcasting world • Was the Canadian Television Board Chairman for two consecutive terms; was BC’s Broadcaster of the Year in 1996; and was awarded Variety Club’s Golden Heart Award for Community Service 2010 Mr. Robert Young '72 • Founded Red Hat Inc., an open source software company • His entrepreneurial endeavors include commercial drone technology, a self-publishing company and owner of the Hamilton Tiger Cats CFL team • His philanthropic efforts focus on access to information, and he co- founded The Center for the Public Domain which provides free online legal resources, sponsored public domain spaces on the internet and copyright reform 5 ALUMNI AWARDS AWARD OF DISTINCTION & HALL OF EXCELLENCE The Honourable Mr. Justice 2011 Randall Scott Echlin '69 • Judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice with a specialty in Labour and Employment Law • Was consistently referred in Lexpert Canada’s Leading Employment Lawyers as one of the top 500 lawyers in Canada • Lectured extensively on Canadian employment law, publishing six books and produced half a dozen videos • He was the first lawyer to earn a Certified Human Resource Certificate • An avid baseball fan, he was the recipient of “Man of the Year” by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and was named on the “100 Most Influential Canadians in Baseball” list in 2008 2012 Mr. John C. van Nostrand '67 • Founding principal of SvN Architects + Planners • Has worked on major urban development projects throughout Southern Ontario with a focus on the Greater Golden Horseshoe • Is actively committed to providing solutions for affordable housing within urban areas 6 ALUMNI AWARDS AWARD OF DISTINCTION & HALL OF EXCELLENCE The Honourable 2013 Coulter A. Osborne '50 • Arbitrator and former Associate Chief Justice of Ontario • Appointed as Ontario’s Integrity Commissioner in 2001 • Appointed to the Order of Ontario in January of 2011 • Appointed the Lobbyist Registrar of Ontario in 2001 • Was a member of the Canadian basketball team in 1956 2015 Mr. Robb W. Webb '74 • His career has been devoted to the management of international companies and the creation of global organizations • Currently the Chief Human Resources Officer for Hyatt Hotels Corporation spanning 50 countries • Sits on the National Board for the Human Rights Campaign in Washington D.C. and has committed his time to serving his communities 7 ALUMNI AWARDS AWARD OF DISTINCTION & HALL OF EXCELLENCE 2016 Ms. Naina Kapur '78 • A pioneer in establishing the prevention of sexual harassment at all workplaces, she was the leading instructing counsel before the Supreme Court of India in 1997 which solidified legally binding directions on workplace sexual harassment • Provides high-end expertise to Internal Committee investigations of Workplace Sexual Harassment • Was honoured with the ALL Grassroots Women of the Decade Achievers Award for her work in gender equality in the workplace Prof.
