LEE Hong Kong Lutheran Theological Seminary Hong Kong CONTROVERSY OVER THE CULTURAL CHRISTIANS PHENOMENON IN CHINA Anarose in a series of articles in the Hong Kong weekly newspaper Christian Times during the fall of 1995 and the spring of 1996. The participants included four Hong Kong theological educators, three Chinese scholars speaking on be- half of the “cultural Christians” in China, and one theological worker from Tai- wan. As a participant in that exchange I will attempt here to recapture its salient points. I. THE CONTROVERSY ERUPTS The controversy was started by Law Bing-Cheung (Lo Bingxiang in Manda- rin pin yin), chairman of the department of religion and philosophy at the Hong Kong Baptist University in a two-part article entitled “The Chinese Apollos and the 1997 Crisis of the Hong Kong Theological World.” PETER K. H. LEE, after his retirement as director of the Christian Study Centre on Chinese Religion and Culture, Hong Kong, has been professor of theology and culture at the Hong Kong Lutheran Theological Seminary. During 1996-97 he is John A. Mackay Professor of World Christianity at Princeton Theological Seminary. The discussion of Chinese “cultural Christianity” has sometimes pitted the aca- demically oriented religious scholars of China against the churchly oriented theologi- ans of Hong Kong. Evangelisation in the Protestant Church in China – Reflections of a Western Sinologist Fredrik Fällman The rapid development of the Chinese Protestant church since the 1980s – registered or unregistered – does not have one single or merely a few explanations, but is the result of several varying factors. Nor is there a coordinated or unified specific strategy for evangeli- sation, largely because of the decentralised and uncoordinated structure of the Chinese Protestant church. National leaders of the China Christian Council (CCC) and the Three- Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM), and teachers at the national Jinling Union Theological Seminary are to some extent preoccupied with ideas of a common Chinese Protestant ecclesiology, but there are also many tendencies towards a return of denominational- ism and less of unity.1 Since 2014 the Chinese party-state has advocated a “sinicization of Christianity” (jidujiao Zhongguohua 基督教中国化), which adds yet another dimension to these issues.2 From a more practical perspective, there is an element of straightforward- ness in the approach of many Chinese Protestants towards non-Christians that differs from the European context. Besides all this, the transforming power of faith is all too often neglected as an element of academic study. What happens more concretely then in regard to evangelisation? The PRC constitution provides for “freedom of religious belief” (§ 36) but says not much about the actual pro- tection of religious expression and activity, including evangelisation, not more than that it should be in the form of “normal religious activity” (zhengchang zongjiao huodong 正 常宗教活动). The expression about “normality” is particularly troublesome, and is one of several signs that the CPC and the PRC government would like to assume the right of interpretation over religious matters and even theology. -

ABSTRACT Multiple Modernizations, Religious Regulations and Church Responses: The Rise and Fall of Three “Jerusalems” in Communist China Zhifeng Zhong, Ph.D. Mentor: William A. Mitchell, Ph.D. There is an extensive literature on modernization, regulation and religious change from a global perspective. However, China is usually understudied by the scholars. Numerous studies tackle the puzzle of the rising of Christianity and its implications in China. However they fail to synthesize the multiple dynamics and diverse regional difference. This dissertation approaches the development of Christianity in contemporary China from a regional perspective. By doing a case study on twelve churches in three prefecture cities (Guangzhou, Wenzhou and Nanyang), I examine how different historical processes and factors interacted to shape the uneven development of Christianity under the communist rule. The main research questions are: How did Protestantism survive, transform and flourish under a resilient communism regime? What factors account for the regional variance of the transformation of Christianity? I argue that there are multiple modernizations in China, and they created various cultural frames in the regions. Although the party-state tried to eliminate religion, Protestantism not only survived, but transformed and revived in the Cultural Revolution, which laid the foundation for momentum growth in the reform era. The development of Protestantism in China is dynamic, path-dependent, and contingent on specific settings. Different modernizations, religious regulation, historical legacy and church responses led to the rise and fall of three “Jerusalems” in communist China. Book Review The Journal of Asian American Theological Forum (AATF), vol. 1 no. 2 Alexander Chow. Theosis, Sino-Christian Theology and the Second Chinese Enlightenment, New York, NY: Palgrave Macmillan, 2013. 248 pages. $90. Alexander Chow’s work on Chinese Christian thought combines careful sympathy, impressive ambition, and bold, insightful suggestions for future constructive projects. The sympathy is evident in his thoughtful readings and vivid reconstructions of a panoply of thinkers, past and present. Chow’s clear and concise presentations of the thought of Watchman Nee, T. C. Chao, and K. H. Ting, the central figures of analysis at the heart of his monograph, would, by themselves, well justify the publication of this work. Besides these, Chow’s writing displays ample evidence of time well-spent ruminating on the works of contemporary Chinese thinkers such as Zhuo Xinping and Liu Xiaofeng as well as various theologians from Christian history—Maximus the Confessor and Gregory Palamas are particularly important, but other voices from Tertullian to Teilhard du Chardin are kept alive in a running, coherent conversation. The impressive ambition of the monograph can be gleaned from the range of this partial list of thinkers alone. Chow succeeds in tying together a number of rich traditions: Western or Latin Christianity, the Chinese Christian descendants of this Western tradition, contemporary Chinese intellectuals, Eastern Orthodoxy past and present, and the three great “Chinese religions”—Daoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. Chow manages this vast range of thought by maintaining a precise theological focus on his central constructive conceit, which also serves as the subtitle for his work: “heaven and humanity in unity,” or tianrenheyi. -

Journal of Ecumenical Studies, 32:1, Winter 1995 THE CONTEMPORARY CONFUCIAN-CHRISTIAN ENCOUNTER: INTERRELIGIOUS OR INTRARELIGIOUS DIALOGUE?* Christian Jochim PRECIS The discipline of comparative religions has paid little attention to perhaps the most important religious phenomenon of the late twentieth century: interreligious dialogue. Avail able scholarship on this topic is largely written by and for participants in various dialogues. This scholarship is mainly on the normative issues that concern participants, thus leaving the need for descriptive, analytical scholarship largely unfilled. This essay engages in descriptive analysis of a relatively new twentieth-century dialogue— the Confucian-Christian dialogue —which, nevertheless, has deep historical roots. The essay turns, first, to history, summarizing two different periods of past Confucian-Christian en counter: the period from Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) to the World's Parliament of Religions (1893), and the twentieth-century period leading up to the recent international Confucian- Christian conferences. It turns, second, to the specific nature of the first, second, and third international Confucian-Christian international conferences (1988,1991, and 1994). -

29 T IGUASSU, 15 WOMEN and men, representing differ- The A ent parts of East Asia and different concerns for East Asia, met together to discuss the major issues we face in reaching complex East Asia for Christ as we enter the 21st century. This paper is built on that discussion, but it goes beyond what we could spiritual cover in our short time together, to try to paint a larger pan- orama of the challenges facing the church in mission in East mosaic of Asia. East Asia East Asia is an incredibly diverse place! But before we discuss it, we need to define it. The term “East Asia” is used here in the way that it is generally used in contemporary political and economic discussion, i.e., to describe collec- Ian tively the countries of Northeast Asia (China including Hong Prescott Kong and Macao, Japan, North and South Korea, Mongolia, and Taiwan) and Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar/Burma, Philip- pines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). It needs to be noted that this politico-cultural definition—which is com- monly used in East Asia today—differs significantly from the physiographic definitions traditionally used by Western ge- ographers.1 Two billion people live in the 17 countries of East Asia, including significant groups of all the world’s major religions, except Judaism. The region is not just one world but many worlds—sometimes intersecting, sometimes colliding, some- times merging into each another. 1 Geographers commonly use the term “East Asia” to refer to “the continental part of the Far East region of Siberia, the East Asian islands, Korea, and eastern and northeastern China” (Ency- clopaedia Britannica, 1998). -

JISMOR 13 Between the Heaven and the Human:1 History, Paradox and Trend of Sino-Christian Theology Movement Guanghu He Introduction When You Xilin2 once wrote about Sino-Christian Theology,3 he asked, “Shouldn’t we understand it as ontological ‘Destiny’ of our society or ‘God’s Great Plan’, in a sense that goes beyond individuals’ will?” From the viewpoint of human history, “Destiny” or “Providence” is often realized through intentional and unintentional actions of human beings. Therefore, “inquiring into the relationship between the Heaven and the human (究天人之際)” (in the great Chinese historian Sima Qian’s words) is the necessary premise to “understanding of the changes from the past to the present. (通古今之變)” 1. For the past two decades, many scholars have called Liu Xiaofeng and me as “Fathers of Sino-Christian Theology.” It means that the two scholars initiated the Sino-Christian Theology movement since mid-1990s in China. But I do not think so. Rather, I would like to emphasize that the concept of “Sino-Christian Theology” was raised firstly by Liu and then spread with Daniel Yeung, with resources of the Institute of Sino-Christian Studies in Hong Kong. Liu and Yeung did greatly contribute to the spread of this concept in mainland China, and I just gave some exact definition to it, arguments for its basis and significance, and discussions on the methods and approaches to it. More importantly, I would like to emphasize that Sino-Christian Theology is just a Christian theology worked and written in Chinese language, in terms of the cultural resources and existential experiences of the Chinese. -

ABSTRACT This thesis explores various trajectories of contextual theology as they have developed in the two Chinese enlightenments of twentieth and twenty-first century China. Drawing methodologically from the typological works of historian Justo González and the missiologists Stephen Bevans and Roger Schroeder, one of the main aims of this study is to map and evaluate the various types of Chinese theology. An analysis of three major Chinese Protestant representatives will identify the tendencies of each type, highlight the importance of a contextual theology in dealing with a context’s socio-political concerns and religio- philosophical tradition, and show a bias in Chinese theology towards Latin Christianity.
