Abstract A checklist of shallow (to 60 m depth) reef fishes is provided for the Bird’s Head Peninsula region of West Papua, Indonesia. The area, which occupies the extreme western end of New Guinea, contains the world’s most diverse assemblage of coral reef fishes. The current checklist, which includes both historical records and recent survey results, includes 1,511 species in 451 genera and 111 families. Respective species totals for the three main coral reef areas – Raja Ampat Islands, Fakfak-Kaimana coast, and Cenderawasih Bay – are 1320, 995, and 877. In addition to its extraordinary species diversity, the region exhibits a remarkable level of endemism considering its relatively small area. A total of 26 species in 14 families are currently considered to be confined to the region. Diving observations and collections of benthic observations using scuba and snorkel were made at six stations in Pago Pago Harbor, two stations in Fagatele Bay, and one station each in Vatia Bay and Fagasa Bay. The purpose of this survey was to determine the full complement of organisms greater than 0.5 mm in size, including benthic algae, macroinvertebrates and fishes, occurring at each site, and to evaluate the presence and potential impact of nonindigenous (introduced) marine species. -

A total of 1656 fish species under two classes, 40 orders, 191 families and 683 geranra reported from marine and estuarine waters of Tamil Nadu. In the checklist, 1075 fish species were primary marine water and remaining 581 species were diadromus. In total, 128 species were reported under class Elasmobranchii (11 orders, 36 families and 70 genera) and 1528 species under class Actinopterygii (29 orders, 155 families and 613 genera). The top five order with diverse species composition were Perciformes (932 species; 56.29% of the total fauna), Tetraodontiformes (99 species), Pleuronectiforms (77 species), Clupeiformes (72 species) and Scorpaeniformes (69 species). At the family level, the Gobiidae has the greatest number of species (86 species), followed by the Carangidae (65 species), Labridae (64 species) and Serranidae (63 species). Fishery status assessment revealed existence of 1029 species worth for capture fishery, 425 species worth for aquarium fishery, 84 species worth for culture fishery, 242 species worth for sport fishery and 60 species worth for bait fishery. -

A recurrent question arising in fish bioacoustics research concerns the number of vocal fish species that may exist. Although it is not possible to provide a precise globally valid number, an estimation based on recordings already collected at coral reefs (Moorea) and on morphological approaches indicates that approximately half of the fish families of this particular environment has at least one known sound- producing species. In light of this, acoustic behaviour should be fully considered in biology, ecology and management plans as it may provide information on a consistent portion of fish biodiversity. Fish bioacoustics has switched from anecdotal reports to long-term, large-scale monitoring studies, capable of providing high resolution information on fish populations’ composition and dynamics. -

NMFS is also charged with the development and implementation of policies for managing national fishing grounds, development and of domestic fisheries regulations, surveillance of foreign fishing off United States coastal waters, and the development and enforcement of international fishery agreements and policies. NMFS also assists the fishing industry through marketing service and economic analysis programs, and mortgage insurance and vessel construction subsidies. The series carries reports on scientific investigations that document long-term continuing programs of NMFS, or intensive scientific reports on studies of restricted scope. The reports may deal with applied fishery problems. The series is also used as a medium for the publication of bibhographies of a specialized scientific nature. A long-term monitonng study was conducted at Inomote Island (Ryukyu Islands, Japan) to explore the responses of a disturbed adult fish assernblage to the recovery of coral on a large reef degraded by an outbreak of the coral-feeding starfish Acanthaster planci. In 1987, 5 yr after the out- break, I censused a reef in which aii of the arborescent corals had been broken apart and the reef for- mation changed into a flat plain of unstructured rubble. Species nchness and numencal density of fishes on the dead reef had decreased severely. Natural recovery of the dead reef was mitiated mainly by larval recruitment of branching Acropora corals in 1989. Since that time, fish species nchness and density on the recovering reef have increased steadily with the increasing percentage cover of live corals. In 1995 to 1997, when the reef had almost 100% live coral cover, most fish assemblage proper- ties (e.g.,species numbers and abundances of the collective assemblage and component ecological groups) on the reef did not differ significantly from those on a nearby reef consisting mostly of arbores- cent Acropora. which had not suffered A. planci predation. The sirnilanty index indicated about 90% resemblance in species composition of the fish assernblages on the recovered and undisturbed reefs. -

Of these 1,020 may be characterized as inshore or epipelagic species, the vast majority of which inhabit coral reefs. Species entries are annotated to include the initial Mariana Islands record, subsequent regional works, synonyms used in major regional works, and justification for synonyms not published previously. A biogeographic analysis is given for the inshore and epipelagic component of the fauna. Benthic and mesopelagic habitats below 200m are poorly known, and existing information is scattered. This paper attempts to include all species of inshore and epipelagic fishes from the region known to date based upon published information and collections known to the authors. No attempt is made to review the literature on species found below 200m. Further, because of logistical constraints no databases of major museum’s holdings were consulted for additional material. Introduction The earliest works to describe fishes from the Mariana Islands were those of Quoy & Gaimard (1824-1825, 1834), Cuvier & Valenciennes (1828-49), and Guichenot (1847). Seale (1901) published the first list of fishes for the island of Guam. These and all subsequent works on fishes of Guam and other Mariana Islands were reviewed in Myers (1988). -

A Lexicographical Introduction and Inventory of Pendau * Fish Names Phil Quick SIL International [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper introduces the first inventory of fish names in Pendau (Tolitoli language group in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia). Among other purposes this paper provides a documentation of about 290 Pendau fish names (in an appended dictionary format), provides other Sulawesi specialists with comparative data, provides field linguists with an outline of some of the issues involved in descriptive documentation of flora and fauna, and provides new data for historical and comparative linguists. Topics covered in this paper are presented in such a way as to help researchers evaluate either the entire inventory of fish names or particular entries of interest. 1. INTRODUCTION This paper introduces the first inventory of fish names in Pendau (Tomini-Tolitoli language group in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia). The purpose of this portion of the paper is to focus on identifying fish names and the total number of fish names possible in a language, understanding the syntax used for binomial names, understanding some of the innovations and folk taxonomy employed, highlight those fish names that begin with one of the two formatives si and ’ali, as in sinobulung ‘various parrotfish species’ and ’alibambang ‘various butterflyfish species’, various bannerfish species, and various angelfish species’, and finally discuss the potential for discovering new species. The identification of fish names and other flora and fauna in a language is not a simple task. This paper also reviews the problems and challenges involved in providing a quality inventory that can be used by other researchers.
