Rapporten identificerer tre typer af områder: 1) Artsspecifikke kerneområder, 2) Vigtige områder for naturtyper og andre arealbaserede temaer/ økosystemkomponenter og 3) Økologiske og biologiske interesseområder. Rapporten identificerer 23 økologiske og biologiske interesseområder og anbefaler, at der i det videre strategiske arbejde med beskyttelse af sårbar natur i Grønland er særlig opmærksomhed på disse områder. Alle områder, som er nævnt ovenfor, foreligger som selvstændige datalag, der kan indgå i en GIS (Geografisk Informations System)- analyse. I forbindelse med klimaændringer, øget skibsfart, ændrede mønstre indenfor fangst og fiskeri, udvikling indenfor landbrug, mulige fremtidige industrielle aktiviteter etc. vurderer rapporten, at der i fremtiden med fordel kan anvendes økosystembaseret forvaltning (Ecosystem Based Management, EBM) af land- og havområder i Grønland. The ice-stream is one of the fastest (19m per day) and most active in the world. Its annual calving of over 35 cu. km of ice accounts for 10% of the production of all Greenland calf ice, more than any other glacier outside Antarctica. The glacier has been the object of scientific attention for 250 years and, along with its relative ease of accessibility, has significantly added to the understanding of ice-cap glaciology, climate change and related geomorphic processes. Criterion (iii): The combination of a huge ice sheet and a fast moving glacial ice-stream calving into a fjord covered by icebergs is a phenomenon only seen in Greenland and Antarctica. Ilulissat offers both scientists and visitors easy access for close view of the calving glacier front as it cascades down from the ice sheet and into the ice-choked fjord. The wild and highly scenic combination of rock, ice and sea, along with the dramatic sounds produced by the moving ice, combine to present a memorable natural spectacle. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS Located on the west coast of Greenland, 250-km north of the Arctic Circle, Greenland’s Ilulissat Icefjord (40,240-ha) is the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which the Greenland ice cap reaches the sea.

Abstract In order to investigate how Inuit Greenlanders in western Greenland are experiencing, responding to, and thinking about recent allegedly human-induced climate change, this dissertation ethnographically examines the lives of Greenlanders as well as Norse and Danes in the course of past historical natural climate cycles. My emphasis is on human endeavours to cultivate a future in the face of difficulties caused by climatic and environmental transformation. I recognize locals’ initiatives to carve out a future in the promotion of sheep farming and tree-planting in southern Greenland and in adaptation processes of northern Greenlandic hunters to the ever-shifting environment.

This edition is based on the second edition of Den Grønlandske Lods, 2. del, Østgrønland, 2008. The collection of accurate information about the East Greenlandic coastline is very difficult, and in this text, some descriptions are cursory. All positions and altitudes given in the text are approximate, and are derived from a range of data collection methods. They are intended to provide the mariner with a link between the book and the relevant charts. Danish Geodata Agency would welcome further details and/or information on possible errors in this text. However, the Danish Geodata Agency hopes that this new edition may be helpful in the navigation of East Greenland. Details of lights, radio beacons, beacons, etc. are not included. Instead, the Danish List of Lights and the nautical charts on which the lights and beacons are shown should be consulted.
