Opened in 1931 and standing high above the Hudson River, the GW Bridge is a double-decker suspension bridge that connects the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan to Fort Lee, New Jersey. A marvel of engineering, it is also the world’s busiest motor vehicle bridge, accommodating nearly 50 million New York-bound vehicles in 2013 alone. When completed in 1931, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, utilizing 107,000 miles of wire in its cables.
