Page 6 / LAS VEGAS TRIBUNE / January 16-22, 2019 POLITICAL ANALYSIS Should Mueller report comment on any noncriminal conduct? By Alan Dershowitz There is much speculation in the media about special counsel allegedly securing evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives. Revelations in some documents growing out of the Paul Manafort case suggest that Manafort, while heading the Trump presidential campaign, may have provided internal polling data to Russian operatives and thus may have colluded with them. We don’t know whether the ev- idence supports such a conclusion, but let’s assume, for purposes of a legal analysis, that Mueller does ALAN DERSHOWITZ come up with compelling evidence But the mere use by a campaign of collusion between the Trump of material previously hacked by campaign and Russian operatives. They will not and may have to wait another two weeks before being paid — if the shutdown is resolved in the interim, which is not certain. If the situation continues into Saturday, it will be the longest govern- ment shutdown in the nation’s history. Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday morning he would “almost say definitely” he would declare a national emergency if efforts to reach an agreement with Democrats in Congress were not successful. Later, during a visit to the border in Texas, Trump told reporters his administration would win the legal fights that would inevitably ensue. “Somebody would sue to stop it, but we would win that suit I believe very quickly,” the president said. The odds of a congressional deal are becoming more remote by the day. On Wednesday, Trump walked out of a White House meeting with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), saying “bye-bye” as he did so. Schumer afterward told reporters Trump had a “temper tantrum.” On Thursday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) added his voice to those calling on Trump to declare a national emergency after attempts to find a compromise came to nothing. Graham pinned the blame on Pelosi for the lack of progress. The Speaker has been staunch in her refusal to concede ground to Trump in his demand for more than $5 billion to construct new stretches of barrier along the border. Last week, Pelosi called a border wall an “immorality.” In his statement, Graham said Pelosi’s refusal to support a wall “vir- tually ends the congressional path to funding for a border wall/barrier.” He added, “It is time for President Trump to use emergency powers to fund the construction of a border wall/barrier. I hope it works.” Meanwhile, The Hill reported that the White House is looking at $13.9 billion in funding approved by Congress last year to use for building Trump’s wall in the event he declares an emergency. That bill provided funding for various Army Corps of Engineers projects. The chief downside with the national emergency gambit, from Trump’s perspective, is that it provides no guarantee that new stretches of wall or fence at the border would ever actually be built. Court challenges could potentially last for years — long enough for the issue to be rendered moot if Trump were to lose his bid for reelection in 2020, for example. The president would also face allegations that he was engaging in a power grab. Even some Republicans have expressed misgivings. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) said on Wednesday it would be “a mis- take” for Trump to use the tactic. Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) said, “It’s a much wiser idea to negotiate something out, because if it’s done it will be tied up in the courts for a long time, and it would not be successful in achieving the objective.” But with no sign of such negotiations being successful, Bannon was bullish on the overall prospects of success. “He can declare the national security emergency and get on with it,” the former chief strategist said. “If done correctly, I’m not sure the courts can ultimately stop this. The National Emergencies Act of 1976, I don’t believe has been tested for its constitutionality.” January 16-22, 2019 / LAS VEGAS TRIBUNE / Page 7 Trump AG nominee told Congress, public should know the results of Mueller probe By Morgan Chalfant pede it in another way, through the oversight Mueller has been investigating Russian in- The Hill powers he would have at the helm of the terference in the 2016 presidential election — William Barr, President Trump’s nom- Justice Department. including possible coordination between the inee for attorney general, told lawmakers In particular, Barr has faced criticism from Trump campaign and Moscow — for more this week that he will allow special counsel Democrats for submitting an unsolicited than 19 months, amid biting public attacks Robert Mueller to complete the Russia inves- memo to the White House last year in which from Trump. The servers kept bringing plat- ters filled with Mott 32’s signature dishes for a very special evening tasting the delicious cuisine they offered. What an emotional expe- rience! Their cuisine is authentic at Mott 32 as the chefs’ honor and adhere to traditional ancient cooking methods. As a restaurant, show and travel reviewer for 20 years, one of the most tender, the juiciest pieces of pork I have ever eaten was their Barbecue Pluma Iberico Pork, with Yellow Mountain Honey. Biting into this culinary masterpiece was like a celebration of flavors. The Barbecue Chef followed traditional Chinese cooking meth- ods for the Barbecue Pluma Iberico Pork, with their secret recipe of two honey glaze coatings and two temperature adjustments, taking 40 minutes to cook, more time than our modern methods. The chefs were really busy tonight preparing the food for the hundreds of invited guests. Beef, another fave of mine, prepared with the finest Australian Wagyu Beef and Black Angus Beef. The selections continued with Peking duck, lobster, free-range chicken, ham, prawns, and some- thing for everyone’s tastes. In addition to the cuisine, Mott 32 salutes their ancient culture (Han Peking Duck takes 48 hours for the Duck Master to prepare following the ancient methods. By The Roving Reporter of the Las Vegas Tribune Photos by David “Bananas” Williams and Lorraine T. Sardelli The cream of the crop of Las Vegas’ top musicians showed up for the Frank Leone’s presentation at the F.I.O.R.E.’s January lun- cheon. If we were to name all of them, there would be no space for the rest of this article, including the devoted members. The room was filled with great talent, fans and friends who came to honor him. Maestro Frank Leone, a musical icon in the Las Vegas entertainment community for many decades, was fantastic in his delivery and well received by an audience that was attentively hanging on to his every word, whether he was relating a factual event or one of his many stories, accumulated in his journey thru a wonderful career. He has played for Frank Sinatra, Englebert Humperdinck, Paul Anka among the many major American stars and has conducted the Symphonic orchestras of many countries and throughout the USA. Among his many global achievements, he was also instrumental in legally bringing two Italians to Las Vegas; one from South Afri- ca, Sergio Franchi and another from Brazil, Nelson Sardelli. The reaction of all present left no doubt of the success of his presentation. Bravo Frank!!! You are a true Lion. The F.I.O.R.E. has solidified its position in the calendar of social events of Las Vegas. Next month’s Valentine’s Party, to be held in the evening of Saturday, February 16th at the Italian American Club, promises to be an epic event. Artist Meegan Boiros and the Ne- vada Silver Tappers along with the music of Grammy Award winner, Gary Anderson, are sure to guarantee a most memorable evening. RSVP to [email protected] is always mandatory at any of the F.I.O.R.E.’s meetings. Maestro Frank Leone arranged, conducted and presented a great composition.
