ASIAN HORIZONS Vol. 7, No. 1, March 2013 Pages: 18-35 DEI VERBUM AND REVELATION Gerald O’Collins, SJ Australian Catholic University & MCD University of Divinity The 1985 Extraordinary Synod of Bishops met in Rome (24 November to 8 December) to celebrate the Second Vatican Council (which had ended twenty years earlier on 8 December 1965), to evaluate the Council’s role in the postconciliar Church, and to develop some principles for the further reception of its teaching.1 The final report of the synod produced six principles for interpreting the sixteen conciliar texts.2 Avery Dulles paraphrased the first principle as follows: “Each passage and document of the Council must be interpreted in the context of all the others, so that the integral meaning of the Council may be rightly grasped.”3 Presupposing that meaning and truth are to be found in the whole, this principle recalled approaches to the Scriptures that interpret the texts in the light of the final, canonical Gerald O’Collins, SJ: After receiving a PhD from the University of Cambridge, taught for 33 years at the Gregorian University (Rome) where he was also dean of the theology faculty (1985-91). As well as publishing hundreds of articles in professional and popular journals, he has authored or co-authored sixty published books. The latest include: Rethinking Fundamental Theology (Oxford University Press), Believing in the Resurrection (Paulist Press) and the first volume of his memoirs, A Midlife Journey (Connor Court and Gracewing). He is an adjunct professor of Australian Catholic University and a Fellow of the MCD University of Divinity. -

Blanchard Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated Vatican II. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of “late Jansenism.” Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century Catholic Church. Nevertheless, many of the reforms implicit or explicit in the Pistoian agenda – such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions – were officially promulgated at Vatican II. -

QL 97 (2016) 84-103 doi: 10.2143/QL.97.1.3154577 © 2016, all rights reserved LITURGICAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL BY A FORGOTTEN CATHOLIC The Old Catholic Observer’s Perspective on the Liturgical Developments at the Second Vatican Council Introduction Liturgy played a very important role at the Second Vatican Council, as it expressed the council’s direction, both in terms of ecclesiology and in terms of ecumenism, as well as in general.1 Liturgy was also the topic of the council’s first constitution, Sacrosanctum Concilium (4 December 1963); the document led to some of the most visible changes in ecclesial life following the council, and, because it was produced so early on in the council, it provided a point of reference for further discussions.2 Observers, * I am grateful to Mrs. S.C. "THE OBEDIENCE OFF AITH" IN DEI VERBUM: A PAULINE PHRASE AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR CATHOLIC INTELLECTUAL LIFE Rev. Daniel B. Gallagher, M.A., Ph.L., S.T.L. The American Maritain Association convenes this year to commemorate several anniversaries. December 8th marks the Fortieth Anniversary of the solemn liturgy, celebrated by Pope Paul VI in Saint Peter's Basilica, which brought the Second Vatican Council to a close. The Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes had been promulgated on the previous day. Twenty-three days later, jacques Maritain would pen the preface to The Peasant of the Garonne. Each of these events is indeed worthy of commemoration. One would hope, however, that the Divine Constitution on Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum), promulgated on November 18th of 1965, would receive no less attention on the Fortieth Anniversary of its publication. "Because of its inner importance," Archbishop Ermenegildo Florit of Florence remarked, "as well as the many vicissitudes it has undergone, the history of the draft of the Constitution on Divine Revelation has fused with the history of this Council into a kind of unity." 1 In what follows, I would like to revisit Dei Verbum with the intention of re-presenting its rich doctrine on Christian faith, a doctrine worthy of closer attention on the part of theologians and philosophers alike. The fathers at Vatican II offered the biblical notion of "obedience" as a privileged way of understanding the Christian response to divine revelation. Rather than entering into the many practical applications of "obedience" to the day-to-day work of professional philosophers and theologians, I will focus more narrowly on the reasons for which this Pauline term was adopted and then proceed to draw out some of its theological and philosophical implications. -

Un ricordo del Card. Ermenegildo Florit, a trent’anni dalla morte di Silvano Piovanelli • Sapevamo bene che l’arcivescovo Florit era Coadiutore con diritto di successione, ma il Card. Elia Dalla Costa era l’arcivescovo che ci aveva imposto le mani consacrandoci sacerdoti, tutta la Diocesi aveva come punto di riferimento i suoi insegnamenti, la stima che avevamo di lui, della sua santità austera e luminosa, era tale che davvero copriva tutto, le persone e le situazioni. Fu dunque Florit che mi chiamò in arcivescovado e mi chiese di lasciare il Seminario Minore, dove per dieci anni con Mons. Enrico Bartoletti e un biennio con Mons. Gino Bonanni ero stato il vicerettore. Mi nominava parroco a Castelfiorentino, al posto di Mons. Giovanni Bianchi scelto come vicario generale. Per questo cambiamento, per me del tutto imprevisto, ebbi bisogno di confrontarmi con Mons. Raffaele Bensi, mio direttore spirituale, ma non ci furono incertezze e il “sì” fu immediato e sereno. Solo il tempo di scendere le scale del palazzo e salire quelle di San Michelino Visdomini. Non so fino a che punto la nomina del nuovo parroco di Castelfiorentino preoccupava l’arcivescovo coadiutore, ma vidi che il “sì” della mia obbedienza di presbitero lo fece molto contento. Vi è stato un altro momento molto positivo di contatto diretto con Florit, succeduto ormai al Card. Dalla Costa come arcivescovo di Firenze, e fu quando egli fece la visita pastorale nella zona della Valdelsa, dove, appunto, io ero da poco parroco. Egli vi si dedicò in maniera piena e totalmente libera. Non solo celebrazioni eucaristiche e incontri con i gruppi , ma visita ai singoli malati, specialmente nella parte più povera del paese. -
