Blanchard, B.A., MSt. A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2018 ABSTRACT EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY FORERUNNERS OF VATICAN II: EARLY MODERN CATHOLIC REFORM AND THE SYNOD OF PISTOIA Shaun L. Blanchard Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated Vatican II. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of “late Jansenism.” Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century Catholic Church. Nevertheless, many of the reforms implicit or explicit in the Pistoian agenda – such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions – were officially promulgated at Vatican II.

Smit-Maan, IJmuiden, for preserving the personal papers of P.J. Maan, on which this paper is based, and for granting me access to them. • The Bishop's Role of Pastoral Governance
The Bishop’s Role of Pastoral Governance: Its Interpretation and Reception by the Magisterium since Vatican II Submitted for the Degree Doctorate in Philosophy By Paul G. Gadie Supervisor: Dr. Eugene Duffy Submitted to the University of Limerick, March 2015 Abstract Author: Paul G. Gadie Title: The Bishop’s Role of Pastoral Governance since Vatican II: Its Subsequent Interpretation and Reception by the Magisterium This thesis will assess the interpretation and reception of the bishop’s role of pastoral governance by the Magisterium since the Second Vatican Council (1962- 65). Historically, this episcopal role had been increasingly restricted from the Council of Trent (1545-63) to the First Vatican Council (1869-70). Due to Vatican I’s premature end only papal governance was legislated for. Subsequently, the increasing dominance of the Roman School of Theology and of Ultramontanism located the exercise of Church governance in the Pope and the Roman Curia. While the bishop exercised a small measure of governance within his diocese, he was portrayed as the local Church manager of the universal Church. Vatican II defined a new and more expanded role of episcopal governance, expressed in a pastoral mode. Vatican II described episcopal governance of the local Church, but also of the universal Church, shared with and always under the leadership of the Pope. Using a hermeneutical approach suggested by Ormond Rush, three key Vatican II documents will be analysed to reveal the process of authorship and their understanding of episcopal governance. Rush’s hermeneutics will also help to analyse the reception of episcopal pastoral governance after the Council.

  • Rev. Daniel B. Gallagher, M.A., Ph.L., S.T.L. the American Maritain Association Convenes This Year to Commemorate Several Anniversaries
"THE OBEDIENCE OFF AITH" IN DEI VERBUM: A PAULINE PHRASE AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR CATHOLIC INTELLECTUAL LIFE Rev. Daniel B. Gallagher, M.A., Ph.L., S.T.L. The American Maritain Association convenes this year to commemorate several anniversaries. December 8th marks the Fortieth Anniversary of the solemn liturgy, celebrated by Pope Paul VI in Saint Peter's Basilica, which brought the Second Vatican Council to a close. The Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes had been promulgated on the previous day. Twenty-three days later, jacques Maritain would pen the preface to The Peasant of the Garonne. Each of these events is indeed worthy of commemoration. One would hope, however, that the Divine Constitution on Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum), promulgated on November 18th of 1965, would receive no less attention on the Fortieth Anniversary of its publication. "Because of its inner importance," Archbishop Ermenegildo Florit of Florence remarked, "as well as the many vicissitudes it has undergone, the history of the draft of the Constitution on Divine Revelation has fused with the history of this Council into a kind of unity." 1 In what follows, I would like to revisit Dei Verbum with the intention of re-presenting its rich doctrine on Christian faith, a doctrine worthy of closer attention on the part of theologians and philosophers alike. The fathers at Vatican II offered the biblical notion of "obedience" as a privileged way of understanding the Christian response to divine revelation. Rather than entering into the many practical applications of "obedience" to the day-to-day work of professional philosophers and theologians, I will focus more narrowly on the reasons for which this Pauline term was adopted and then proceed to draw out some of its theological and philosophical implications.

  • Un Ricordo Del Card. Ermenegildo Florit, a Trent’Anni Dalla Morte
Giovanni Bianchi scelto come vicario generale.
