Refine Women’s Ministry Psalm 139: Personal Doxology February 24, 2021 INTRODUCTION Today we are going to delve into Book 5 of the Book of Psalms which includes Psalms 107- 150. Psalm 1 and 2, which serve as the introduction to the entire Book of Psalms, tell us that this collection of poetry was designed to be the prayer book of God’s people as they strive to be faithful to the commands of the Torah and wait with hope for the future Messianic Kingdom. And here in Book 5 we can clearly see both of those themes. From the BibleProject video that provided the overview of Psalms, we learned that Book 5 opens with a series of poems that affirm that God hears the cries of His people and will one day send the Messiah, the future king, to defeat evil and bring God’s Kingdom. Within Book 5, we find two smaller collections, one called the “Hallel” (113-118) and one called the “Song of Ascents” (120-134). Each one of these collections ends with a poem about the future Messianic Kingdom and together, these two smaller psalters within Book 5 sustain the hope of God redeeming His people. In the center of Book 5 is Psalm 119, the longest psalm in the Bible. Psalm 119 is an acrostic poem, divided into 22 parts (8 verses each) each starting with a consecutive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The theme of Psalm 119 is glorifying God and His Word. The writer had great affection and reverence for the Torah. -

Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context. -

44. Psalms 136-139 Praying Psalm 136 with Jesus Psalm 136 is a hymn of joyous admiration which finds expression in wave after wave of jubilant thanksgiving. 1Give thanks to GOD who is good! Your covenant love endures forever! .of lords (אֲדנֵ֣י) *3Give thanks to the God The response appears in other psalms: ‘Give thanks to GOD who is good. Your covenant love endures for ever’ (Psalm 106:1). ‘Give thanks to GOD who is good. Your covenant love endures for ever’ (Psalm 107:1). ‘Give thanks to GOD who is good. Your covenant love endures for ever’ (Psalm 118:1). ‘Your covenant love, O GOD, endures for ever’ (Psalm 138:8) It is possible that the litany form with the assembly proclaiming after each statement ‘Your covenant love endures forever’ was used with a variety of repeated responses in other psalms, without appearing in the text. The history of Israel is part of Jesus’ history and so the history of his disciples. We can sing this hymn thinking also of the Passover effected by Jesus, and the many wonderful ways in which God has proved victorious in the obstacles that have faced us on our journey to the enjoyment of communion with God. L.C. Allen, “Faith on Trial: An Analysis of Psalm 139,” Vox Evangelica 10 (1977): 5-23. Faith on Trial: An Analysis of Psalm 139 L.C. Allen [p.5] The Christian prizes the Psalter on at least two counts. He loves those psalms which he can read easily through New Testament spectacles, such as Psalms 22 and 110. Then he values another group for their evident spiritual timelessness. Examples are Psalm 23, a masterpiece of devotion expressed by an individual believer, and Psalm 73, a duel between faith and materialism which the modern Christian knows all too well. Into this latter category doubtless falls Psalm 139 too, for its fine picture of God as gloriously transcendent yet intimately near. But the reader must always endeavour to let Scripture speak for itself, on its own terms. Perhaps this is more difficult in the case of the Psalms than in any other part of the Old Testament. Since each psalm generally stands alone, it is easier to detach it from its cultural context. The task of the exegete is to glean a passage’s basic meaning and setting; only when that task has been carefully discharged, may parallels and principles be deduced which are particularly relevant to the Christian. The Old Testament has suffered much in the past from being studied at two separate levels, by the academic who is in danger of ignoring the crucial fact that it belongs to the Christian canon of Scripture, and by the non-academic who rushes to ‘Christianize’ and rejects material which he cannot instantly reshape. -

St John’s College Chapel Services Lent Term 2016 St John’s College Chapel Since the early thirteenth century the site of St John’s College has had a place of Christian worship. The original Chapel, whose ruins may still be viewed in First Court, belonged to a hospital for the poor and infirm and was retained when the College was founded in 1511. Our present Chapel, built in 1869 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, continues this faithful offering of prayer with regular services enriched by the College’s outstanding choral tradition. Members of the public are welcome at all Choral Services, printed in BOLD TYPE in this list. Surplices are provided in the Chapel, and are worn by members of the College on Sundays, at Evensong on Saturdays, and on other holy days as marked in this list with the letter S. Choral Evensong Our service of Evensong follows that set down in the Church of England’s Book of Common Prayer in 1662. The service can be followed on the cream cards in the stalls. On Tuesdays to Sundays it is sung by the College Choir of men and boys, who study either at the College or at the College School. On Mondays Evensong is sung by the College’s mixed-voice choir, St John’s Voices. The words of the psalm appointed for the day and sung by the Choir may be found in the Book of Common Prayer (usually red). Please join in singing the hymns, usually found in the green New English Hymnal. In accordance with the spirit of the Book of Common Prayer (a portion of) the Morning Psalms are sung during the first half of term, and (a portion of) the Evening Psalms during the second half.
