The American Indian Movement in the 1960s and 1970s The Red Power movement1 that arose in the 1960s and continued to the late 1970s may be perceived as the second wave of modern pan-Indianism 2. It differed in character from the previous phase of the modern pan-Indian crusade3 in terms of massive support, since the movement, in addition to mobilizing numerous groups of urban Native Americans hailing from different tribal backgrounds, brought about the resurgence of Indian ethnic identity and Indian cultural renewal as well .4 Under its umbrella, there emerged many native organizations devoted to address- ing the still unsolved “Indian question ”. Man with the Rocks. Lame Deer said that if buffalo were used in bullfighting, the cocky matadors would promptly be trampled and gored into extinction. -

COMPARATIVE CULTURES LAKOTA WOMAN I have prepared some questions for you to answer as while reading Mary Brave Bird Crow Dog’s autobiography. This book is a personal account of the American Indian Movement from the point of view of those involved. *** At the end of each chapter, after answering my question in one paragraph, write another paragraph about what struck you most about the chapter. Give me your reaction and thoughts about what Mary has said. *** (So, I’m expecting two paragraphs for each chapter, about five to six pages total.) Chapter 1: What Indian nation does Mary belong to? Is the United States ready to make a report on the disclosure motion, Brady v. Maryland disclosure motion? MR. HULTMAN: Yes, Your Honor. The government is prepared and will disclose but we certainly take no position that we're ready to under Brady. We still contend it has no applicability. I wouldn't want the Court to believe that's the basis upon which we're making the disclosure. We're just plain making it. THE COURT: You're making it reserving your right not to make it? MR. HULTMAN: I want the Court to know -- THE COURT: I understand. MR. HULTMAN: I'm not making it because of any basis of Brady v. Maryland. Marxism and the American Indian Sovereignty Movement

For journal: Cold War History ‘Red’ Nations: Marxists and the Radical Native American Sovereignty Movement of the Late Cold War 2 Abstract This article constructs a history of the mutual personal engagement of Native American sovereignty activists and Marxist entities in the 1970s and 1980s. Native American diplomacy attempted to reconfigure the geography of American Indian sovereignty into a fully independent Native America in alliance with revolutionary Marxism and its ‘red’ nations around the globe. Marxist-Native solidarity in Europe was enabled by older continental European fantasies about Indians, and sanctioned by some Eastern Bloc governments. However, as the case of Nicaragua shows, Indian – Marxist alliances could not be sustained because of the difficulties of reconciling U.S. patriotic anti-Communism, the Marxist revolutionary project, and the indigenous rights struggle. Key words: Native Americans, sovereignty, solidarity, Marxists, Cold War, diplomacy. Word count: 9995 3 Introduction Just two months after the famous 1973 siege of Wounded Knee, the United Nations Secretary-General’s office received a package from the National Amerindianist American Redman’s Party. The packet spelled out a program for the full decolonization of American Indian reservations into an independent country called “Greater Ameridia Patria” - “[a]n Indian people and government ruled by the doctrine of socialism as practiced by our ancestry.”1 While the Redman’s Party never resurfaced, their initiative was a manifestation of a distinct strand of Native American sovereignty activism that aimed to achieve full independence from the United States. -

Melda Red Bear (Lakota) was born on Pine Ridge (Oglala Lakota / Sioux) Reservation in South Dakota (1939-). Her husband, Lupe Trejo (1938-1999) is Mexican and has been a long-term resident of the reservation. I first met this couple in 1994 and developed an abiding friendship with them prior to our decision to collaborate in recording their storytelling sessions (1997-98). The recording and interpretation of the material evokes ethical questions about power and representation that have arisen with debates about 'as-told-to' autobiographies. -
