7 Loire

Patrice Morlat - L’Abbaye de St Laurent - Pouilly The Abbaye's 120 acres of vineyards lie around the village of St Laurent in the East of the Appellation, where chalk and limestone soils add to the key mineral character of the wines. Pascal and Patrice Morlat have invested in a brand new wine making facility which is housed in one of the ancient Abbey buildings where pre chilling of musts, gentle pressing, low temperature, long fermentations, gentle filtration, nitrogen blanketing and all stainless steel equipment form the technical backdrop that helps preserve the natural energy of these wines without resorting to sulphur and other preservatives. The result is a wine of nervy character, perfect to accompany river fish.

Henri Bourgeois - Chavignol The Bourgeois Estates are based at Chavignol near Sancerre from where they produce a range of mainly Sauvignon- based wines starting with their excellent “House” wine, Petit Bourgeois and finishing with a clutch of fine Sancerres. Our selection includes their Vigne Blanche Sancerre which shows off the house style well.

Domaine Des Herbauges - Nantes Jérôme Chôblet makes precise well flavoured wines from his estate in Cotes de Grandlieu, near Nantes. We ship his Classic Sur Lie Muscadet and his excellent Val de Loire Chardonnay. Both are made in a modern fresh style and are excellent examples of the variety.

Domaine de Boissan - Sablet Domaine de Boissan is a small estate in Sablet, on the western slopes of Mont Ventoux. With vineyards in Gigondas and Vacqueyras, M Bonfils makes lovely, concentrated yet elegant wines, a real find in this region of often overcooked plum jam. These can be drunk quite young when the ripe raspberry fruit makes them very appealing, or left to mature, allowing the deeper flavours to come out.

The wines are complex, full flavoured and long lasting.

Bodegas Urbina - Cuzcurrita Bodegas Benito Urbina, a family-owned, single estate winery, has 75 hectares of vineyards, 65 of Tempranillo, and 10 of Graciano, Mazuelo and Viura. Four generations of the family have dedicated themselves to the cultivation of their vineyards and the production of wine. In 1975 the bodega began to age and bottle their own wine in order to retain the special characteristics of a small single estate. Their sole objective, the production of quality wines, has been achieved as the result of careful using traditional techniques, harvesting by hand and avoiding the use of weed killers and pesticides.

Bodegas Covila - Alava - Rioja Covila is a modern progressive winery situated in the heart of the Alavesa - considered to be the prime region for Rioja production. They have 400 hectares of vines producing a range of wines from young easy drinking Tintos to full- bodied traditional oak-aged wines. Our selection shows both styles off to advantage. conditions for the wines.

Bodegas Emperatriz - Rioja This estate is unusual in Rioja in that the Bodega is entirely surrounded by its 100 hectares of vines. High on the Rioja Alta plain on stony soil, the estate makes elegant restrained wines almost in a Bordelais style. Dry, long and long lived, these are great food-friendly wines. Their Salagon range is made at the Bodega from grapes sourced from their other vineyard parcels in the area. Excellent value for money.

Bodegas Val de Xuliana - Galicia This estate near the border of Portugal in the far west of Northern Spain, produces an elegant white wine from the Albarino grape which is often thought of as the “King” of Galicia. Aromatic, nervy and dry, the wine works equally well as an aperitif or with the local seafood dishes.

Bodegas Alconde - Navarra Alconde are based at Lerin in Navarra, a small region to the east of Rioja and lying adjacent. The wine styles are similar to its more illustrious neighbour but with the use of a wider variety of grape types allowed. Alconde make very well priced tintos from Tempranillo, Merlot and Garnacha and we have two of them here. Great value.

The Chardonnay has a small percentage of oak ageing.
