The Locations and Relocations of Lusophone Studies
The Locations and Relocations of Lusophone Studies josiah blackmore harvard university “ usophone studies,” or the range of topics and methodologies centered on Lthe study of the Portuguese-speaking world, is a relatively recent disciplinary designation with origins in Portuguese studies and Luso-Brazilian studies. As a field, Lusophone studies encompasses the study of Portugal and Portuguese- speaking countries and communities outside of Portugal, such as those in Africa (Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea) and in Asia (e.g., Macau, Timor, and India) but is typically exclusive of Brazil. Lusophone studies, therefore, takes as its collective matter of analysis a vast geographical arena south and east of Portugal with a variety of cultures and national and ethnic identities that at one point existed under the umbrella of Portuguese colonialism. The extended geographical arena of the field also supports a practice of interdisciplinary scholarship that reaches out- side of traditional literary studies and history to include cinema studies, dias- poric studies, or gender and sexuality studies that are commensurate with developments in other humanities disciplines. The current configurations of Lusophone studies raise the question of disci- plinary labels and scholarly practices, which in turn reveal a politics of identity and even a struggle for survival of a comparatively small field in the North Amer- ican academy. Entrenched biases or geopolitical realities have long affected Luso- phone studies, not to mention the name of the field itself. On the one hand, shifting nomenclatures reveal a consciousness of collective identities and affilia- tions to national, political, or cultural realities, while on the other hand they can act as strategic attempts to delineate the specific national and cultural purviews of study that define the discipline. -

Durante o colóquio “Língua Global,” realizado em Moçambique em março passado, quando da visita do Presidente de Portugal Cavaco João Almino Silva, o Ministro da Cultura de Portugal disse não ver empecilhos políticos quanto`a concretização do acordo. O Presidente de Writer Moçambique, Armando Guebuza, mantém-se favorável ao acordo, ainda que não tenha se comprometido oficialmente. Em junho de 2008 haverá uma nova reunião da CPLP. O governo português aprovou uma resolução, em março de 2008, propondo à Assembléia da República a ratificação do segundo protocolo modificativo, que abre caminho para a aprovação do Acordo num prazo de seis anos. O Acordo Ortográfico, que visa unificar a escrita das diversas variedades do português, foi lançado em 1990, devendo ter entrado em vigor em 1994. Tal fato não ocorreu porque apenas o Brasil, Cabo Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe assinaram os dois protocolos modificativos estabelecidos entre os membros da CPLP. Português é a única língua do mundo, com mais de 50 milhões de falantes, que possui duas escritas oficiais do mesmo idioma. A variedade dentro da unidade é um fator lingüístico que apenas enriquece uma língua. Todos que pertencem à comunidade dos países de língua portuguesa se expressam em português e é este padrão geral ou unidade que está em debate. -

Portuguese Language Identity in the World: Adventures and Misadventures of an International Language
Portuguese language identity in the world: adventures and misadventures of an international language Diana Santos University of Oslo Abstract This paper offers several cases where language plays an undeniable role in identity and world citizenship, concerning Portuguese-speaking countries. First, I provide some quantitative data on Portuguese as a global language, and highlight some of the challenges it faces now, being the official language in a dozen different countries with different governments and policies. Second, I offer my view of the importance of the language to the Portuguese identity, using two children books written 100 years ago, to explain how identity is represented and conveyed to the young generations. After briefly mentioning three schools in Portugal concerned with national identity (the mythical, the sociological, and the historical), I propose a “linguistic” school, going on to attempt to substantiate my claims on the importance of the language for lusophone identity in widely different cases: the linguistic situation in Mozambique, the East Timor crisis and its impact in Portugal, the (international) orthographic agreement, Brazilian linguistic activity and language policy in the digital world. I end the paper suggesting that, since language both unites and divides us, corpus linguistic studies could and should provide interesting empirical data for the quest (and recreation) of our international identity, and make a plea for the active involvement of the linguistic community in the development of PI (International Portuguese). 1. Introduction The relationship of most Portuguese-speaking people with their language can be described this way: their country may be in crisis, things may be far from perfect, but our language is beautiful, transcends us, and we are attached to it no matter political differences or actual border conflicts. -

1 Margo Milleret Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM 87131 Factors Influencing the Growth of Portuguese Enrollments in the 21st Century Abstract Data from the Modern Language Association demonstrates that the growth in post-secondary enrollments in Portuguese since 1998 has been at a higher rate than other foreign languages. From 1998-2002 the growth rate was 21% and from 2002-2006 it was 22.4%, although the latest information for 2006-2009 shows a somewhat lower rate of 10.8%. While these numbers are encouraging, the total figures for matriculations in Portuguese at post-secondary institutions is still rather small at 11,371 in 2009, especially when compared to other Less Commonly Taught Languages such as Japanese (73,434), Chinese (60,976), Arabic (35,083) and Russian (26,883). This essay will examine four factors that have contributed and will continue to contribute to the growth of enrollments at both secondary and post-secondary levels in the 21st century. These factors are 1) the increased investments made by the private and public sectors to support the study of Portuguese; 2) the impact of heritage speakers of Portuguese, 3) the interest of Spanish speakers in Portuguese; and 4) the action of Portugal and Brazil in the maintenance and promotion of the Portuguese language. Although it is not possible to gauge the exact impact of each of these factors, there is some room for optimism that the growing economic importance and visibility of Brazil on the world stage has generated a greater demand for the study of Portuguese in secondary and post- secondary education. -

Mamiwata, Migrations, and Miscegenation: Transculturation in José Eduardo Agualusa, Mia Couto, and Germano Almeida NIYI AFOLABI University of Texas, Austin Abstract: This study forges a tryptic partnership between the notions of Mamiwata, migrations, and miscegenation to examine selected works by Mia Couto, José Eduardo Agualusa, and Germano Almeida. Considering miscegenation as the point of convergence for the legacy of Portuguese colonialism, the three writers share the varied responses of their respective nation to cultural contact with Portugal. The intersection between transculturation and miscegenation evokes the negotiation of a new identity where the colonized supersedes the dominating effects of colonialism. The fluidity of the sea and the image of the water spirit thus converge into a phenomenon of shifting, migratory identities. While each former colony has responded differently to this intercultural exchange, Lusophone African writers frequently deploy transcultural phenomena both to question and embrace post-colonial realities. FACULTY OF MEDIEVAL AND MODERN LANGUAGES PORTUGUESE Final Honour School Handbook INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS WHO START THEIR FHS COURSE IN OCTOBER 2015 AND EXPECT TO BE TAKING THE FHS EXAMINATION IN TRINITY TERM 2018 PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE The Final Honour course in Portuguese aims to develop an active and passive command of correct spoken and written Portuguese at an advanced level, with some appreciation of the differences between the European and Brazilian norms, and different stylistic registers. This is done by means of regular compulsory classes in translation to and from Portuguese, instruction in writing essays in Portuguese, grammar classes as needed, and classes allowing you to work through a range of oral/aural exercises. In the examinations for the Final Honour School, all those reading Portuguese take the following language papers: Paper I Prose composition and essay Paper II A Unseen translation (from European Portuguese) Paper II B Unseen translation (from Brazilian Portuguese) Oral examination – which consists of an aural comprehension exercise, and discourse and conversation in Portuguese. Undergraduates reading Portuguese sole must also take Paper III (Year abroad project and translation from older forms of Portuguese). PAPER I: TRANSLATION INTO PORTUGUESE AND ESSAY Classes in translation from English into Portuguese, which undergraduates are required to attend throughout the course, are organized centrally. Tuition for this subject will help you to handle more complex syntactical structures, acquire a richer active vocabulary and gain a command of abstract written Portuguese, as well as of narrative and descriptive prose. For the essay, instruction is provided in the form of classes, organized in small groups.
