Despite the summer holidays, work has continued on the archive projects; Perth Burgh Historical Files are now being listed, as are the records of St Andrews Episcopalian Church, Strathtay. The Perth Burial Registers database now contains nearly 3500 records, and we’re talking with the experts on the best means of searching the database when it is online. Unfortunately, Alex Porter has had to withdraw from working on the Name Authority File, although John Howat has kindly taken up the baton. Alex has done tremendous work on what is a very complex task, for which we sincerely thank him. We wish him the very best and good health and hope to see him again very soon. As you will see on the back cover, our next meeting is in January, when Margaret Laing, author of Close-up on Coupar Angus and Donald Abbott, author of A Ramble in Rait will be talking about their experiences as local historians. Everyone (and their guests) are very welcome to come and spend what I am sure will be an enjoyable and informative afternoon.. Another exciting announcement is that, with the help of the Library and Archive Services, the Friends of Perth & Kinross Council Archive have their own publication coming out in the next few weeks. The three main settlements of Blairgowrie, Alyth and Kirriemuir are located at the mouths of Glen Shee, Glen Isla and Glens Clova and Prosen respectively. They developed originally as market towns for the glens but only Kirriemuir has an operative livestock mart today. Many of the population commute to Perth and Dundee, although small industries often associated with agriculture and tourism are locally important. The nature of the soils and favourable climate make Strathmore one of the most important agricultural areas in Scotland growing a wide range of crops. Agriculture remains the main economy of the area although afforestation of the higher ground is increasing. Geology and Physiographic Regions The Highland Boundary Fault is t..e most significant structural element of the area, running across it from south-west to north-east.     East Perthshire Rare Plant Register March 2015 version M.C.Robinson Veronica fruticans Rock Speedwell 1 INTRODUCTION A Rare Plant Register for the Watsonian Vice-county of East Perthshire (vc89) appeared on-line and in print in April 2011. One of the benefits of collecting all the available records of the vice-county’s rare, scarce and otherwise notable plants together in one place was to be able to see at a glance which sites needed an up- dating visit. This provided a focus for botanical field work in 2011 and 2012, resulting in a new edition in March 2013. This third edition includes the results from two further field seasons A Register for the vice-county of West Perthshire (vc87) is near to completion and one for Mid Perthshire (vc88) will follow in due course. The work involved in the creation of these registers will enable a revision of the Checklist of the Plants of Perthshire (Smith et al, 1992) to be undertaken. In the longer term it is intended to produce a new Flora of Perthshire. The only existing one, The Flora of Perthshire, by Francis Buchanan White, was published in 1898, so a new one is long overdue. No such register can ever be complete and this one must be considered a work in progress. Its two main objectives are 1. To provide information on the more ‘special’ plants of the vice-county for those needing it. 2. To stimulate botanists to provide more records. In respect of objective 1, there are a number of reasons why people may need to know where scarce and potentially vulnerable plant species are growing.
