Alyth Gala Day

Well at least this year the rain did not stop play. Alyth Gala Committee hopes that everyone had a great day on Sunday 7th June. The feedback has been quite good so far. If there was anything that you did not like then please let us know. I’m sure you will know someone who is on the Committee. If not, then send your comments or suggestions in through the Voice and it’s sure to reach us. As with everything we know there are areas where things could have been a little bit better and we will try to improve on them for next year. We have already made mental notes to ensure that the sound system does not have fade on it. A few people asked me why Perthshire Brass was not in the main ring. It was through prior agreement with the band, they asked for somewhere they could place their equipment where it could be left in situation without having to carry it about all day. If it’s your wish to see them more in to the body of the Kirk for next year, perhaps in between the stalls beside everyone else, then let us know and we will discuss it with George before the event to ensure the wishes of everyone are heard. The Committee would like to have more attractions for the main ring next year, but as with everything that costs money, big money, so we will have to look at how we secure that revenue to provide you with continuous entertainment next time. Alyth & District Pipe Band in Alyth Gala Day parade

The Committee have again been heartened by the generosity of the businesses large and small throughout the town who donated prizes for Gala Day. Even in these hard times when every penny counts our traders are still willing to put their hands into their pockets and provide gifts to the people of Alyth and beyond. We would also like to thank the women of the WRI who were the first to come to our assistance when looking for volunteers for the parade. They formed the largest part of the marshalling so thank you ladies, and thank you to everyone who as- sisted in the parade. The safety of participants and pedestrians is what we achieved. I even saw the parade being stopped twice so that people could cross the road safely to take photographs. That’s what it’s all about, getting involved and enjoying the day. We are always open to suggestion on how to make the parade better. Please remember that groups and associations, clubs or organisations do not need a personal invitation to join the parade in Alyth, it’s your parade. As soon as you start to see next year’s articles in the Voice advertising that work has begun by the Committee then put your groups name forward. It’s a great way to attract new members to your organisation.

Councillor Ian Miller & Tommy Ritchie welcomed visitors to Gala Day

Several prizes were won by visitors from other towns and areas, Kirkcaldy, Perth, Blairgowrie, Glenisla, Glenshee to name but a few. That aspect is encouraging to the Committee when you consider what other events were on the same day across the county. Pete Wishart, John Swinney, Ian Miller, Bob Ellis and Dennis Melloy, all elected representatives were present on the day and have all made positive com- ment about the event and the number of visitors it attracted to the town. That in itself generates interest in what we are doing and brings much needed money to the town. The Committee has to acknowledge the work done on the day by both Bob Ellis and Ian Miller who helped out with running different events during the day. Your Gala takes almost a year to organise and in August this year we start the whole process again. That gives you and us lots of time to make next year’s event even better. It would be great if you wanted to come along and help organise something, but if not then your suggestions on how to make it better are still wel- come. Alyth Gala Day

RUNNING EVENTS AT ALYTH GALA DAY Thanks to the enthusiasm of Audrey Gillies and Cate Brodie Alyth Gala had its first ever Fun Run. Twenty two individuals and 10 families of all ages completed the one and a half mile course from Jubilee Park to Glenisla Golf Course and back. Everyone received a medal and the applause of the Gala Arena. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd males and females back were awarded laser engraved glass trophies. Special thanks to the parents who marshalled the route. The second running event of the day was the Junior and Senior Hill Race. The Junior race was a shortened but equally tough section of the senior race and included runners who had already run the fun run. Runners in the senior race were encouraged up the final pull to the top of Alyth Hill by the stirring sound of the pipes played by Alyth's Kyle Macintyre (left). Unfortunately the police and army cadet teams had to withdraw from the Services Challenge due to other commitments, but Grant Duffy, Young Citizen of the Year, ran the senior hill race. In total more than 50 runners took part which was fantastic and is really encouraging for future years. Just need more mums © M. Strachan and dads! Ron McGill © M. Strachan
