Based on the design of the Liberty ship and produced using the same assembly line methods, 531 Victory ships, with steam turbine engines which cruised at approximately 15 – 17 knots —dramatically faster than the Liberties — were produced in 1944 and 1945. The first Victory ship, the S.S. United Victory, was launched at the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation in February 1944.
