The county’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs is now clearing the kudzu and invasive privet from the two-plus acres of flood plain at the northwest corner of the bridge and creek, creating a park and potential trail connections between Emory University and Zonolite Park. The idea for the park began a few years ago, when the Georgia Department of Trans- portation announced plans to replace the bridge on Briarcliff Road. This announcement offered opportunities to improve greenspace and watershed protection in the area. Members of South Fork Conservancy and Druid Hills Civic Association subsequently met over several months with neighbors from Friends of Herbert Taylor Park, Briar Hills, Victoria Estates, and Emory University to explore ideas and opportunities. The outline of suggestions included sidewalks on Briarcliff, access to trails along the creek, and new trails for connecting green space and public parks up and down the South Fork of Peachtree Creek. Neighborhood support led elected officials to explore purchasing the floodplain acres. A design provided by South Fork Conservancy and supported by the group called for a stormwater garden to slow and clean rainwater flowing into the creek, provide access from both sides of Briarcliff Road, and create a trail linking the new park to Herbert Taylor Park across the creek and to Zonolite Park downstream.

    Georgia STAND-UP Atlanta Metropolitan Area Campaign The Atlanta Regional Campaign is a community-led infrastructure campaign to challenge the extractive economy and its disproportionate impact on low wealth communities and communities of color. Bloomberg says that Atlanta is the second most unequal city in the US. Middle-income jobs have all but disappeared over the years sending residents to either the low end or the high end of the spectrum. Metro Atlanta's wealth gap means our highest earning residents, the top 5 percent, make 20 times more than our bottom 5 percent. Income disparities remain directly tied to race and effect access to transportation, affordable housing, and jobs. Our campaign will address three issues: (1) transportation infrastructure, (2) affordable housing, and (3) access to jobs. Success will be achieved through active participation in policy implementation, educating affected communities, monitoring new policies and funding streams. In addition, success will be achieved by activating vulnerable communities to take advantage of new policies, ensuring that these policies don’t burden their ability to have access to transit, affordable housing, and jobs. 1. Transportation It has been stated that General Sherman may have burned mid-19th century Atlanta, but in the mid- 20th century policy in Atlanta took that reconstructed city and dissected and destroyed its center with interstate highways — until what remained of neighborhoods ended up being separated like little islands, all of them fairly dependent on cars for transportation. And after having been uprooted from those “gouged” neighborhoods, many black residents suddenly lost their centrally located homes near jobs centers.

    Origin Study Findings February, 2013 Situation: Neighborhood / Area origin studies we conducted on February 2nd at the Buckhead Community Recycling Center (CRC) and on February 9th at the Old Fourth Ward CRC. Service Area Definitions: • Primary service area – where 70% of the users stated they were from • Secondary service area – where 71% to 85% of the users stated they were from • Tertiary service area – where >85% of the users state they were from Findings: Old Fourth Ward (O4W) CRC • Between 2012 and 2013 the primary service had compacted 20% from 15 to 12 neighborhoods. Virginia Highland, Midtown, Morningside, Decatur, Inman Park, Candler Park and O4F continued high usage. Interesting to note that O4W dropped from 1st to 7th in usage. Understandably, Buckhead dropped out of the primary service area. • Since the 2012 study the secondary service area has compacted slightly, (8%), from 12 to 11 neighborhoods. Recyclers come from a broad geographic area. • In the tertiary service area, the number of neighborhoods cited declined fro 44 to 35, a 26% decline. Like the secondary service area, this area draws from broad geographic area. • In total, the service area was compacted from 70 to 57 neighborhoods, (18%), but continues to draw from a broad geographic area. Buckhead CRC • Still in its first year of operations, the Buckhead CRC draws from 26 areas, a much smaller number of areas than O4W. • The primary service area is comprised of 3 areas / neighborhoods, Buckhead, Morningside and Virginia Highland. This may be explained by the simple fact that Buckhead is much larger geographically than O4W.
