MONTY PYTHON at 50 , a Month-Long Season Celebra
Tuesday 16 July 2019, London. The BFI today announces full details of IT’S… MONTY PYTHON AT 50, a month-long season celebrating Monty Python – their roots, influences and subsequent work both as a group, and as individuals. The season, which takes place from 1 September – 1 October at BFI Southbank, forms part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the beloved comedy group, whose seminal series Monty Python’s Flying Circus first aired on 5th October 1969. The season will include all the Monty Python feature films; oddities and unseen curios from the depths of the BFI National Archive and from Michael Palin’s personal collection of super 8mm films; back-to-back screenings of the entire series of Monty Python’s Flying Circus in a unique big-screen outing; and screenings of post-Python TV (Fawlty Towers, Out of the Trees, Ripping Yarns) and films (Jabberwocky, A Fish Called Wanda, Time Bandits, Wind in the Willows and more). There will also be rare screenings of pre-Python shows At Last the 1948 Show and Do Not Adjust Your Set, both of which will be released on BFI DVD on Monday 16 September, and a free exhibition of Python-related material from the BFI National Archive and The Monty Python Archive, and a Python takeover in the BFI Shop. Reflecting on the legacy and approaching celebrations, the Pythons commented: “Python has survived because we live in an increasingly Pythonesque world. Extreme silliness seems more relevant now than it ever was.” IT’S… MONTY PYTHON AT 50 programmers Justin Johnson and Dick Fiddy said: “We are delighted to share what is undoubtedly one of the most absurd seasons ever presented by the BFI, but even more delighted that it has been put together with help from the Pythons themselves and marked with their golden stamp of silliness. -

Very Silly Party Politics: Surrealism and Satire in the ‘Pythonesque’ Abstract 2019 sees the 50th anniversary of the iconic British television comedy series Monty Python’s Flying Circus (BBC: 1969-74). This article focuses on the concept of ‘Pythonesque’, placing the broadly political satirical content that is evident within the Pythons’ mainstream TV work and in selected subsequent film work at the centre of the notion of ‘Pythonesque’. It will be suggested, moreover, that the Pythons’ socio-cultural critical position is embedded in a long established British literary satirical tradition. Further, this article will aim to show that ‘Pythonesque’ incongruity, whilst adopting the aesthetic of the nihilistic cabaret of the Dadaists, was further influenced by the contemporary strain of British vernacular surrealism that permeated twentieth century popular performance through Music Hall, Variety comedy and The Goons, and also borrows Surrealist satirical perspectives. -

ARGUMENT Jerry showed them to the lounge. It was decorated with jungle patterns, animal skins and Bamboo furniture and was surprisingly small. There was some shuffling of feet amongst the visitors, normally cocky from riding high for so long But on this occasion nervous and almost shy. Elvis Broke the ice. “I hear you Boys like my music,” he told the Beatles. “Yeah, Big fans,” Paul replied. George and Ringo just nodded, still looking half at their feet and half at Presley. “What do you think of us then, Elvis?” John asked. Brian winced. Then relaxed as Elvis said: “I think you Boys are pretty good. When I can hear you, anyhow.” The Beatles laughed, even John. “Sit down, Boys,” said Elvis. “Let’s have a drink. MayBe even – “ There was a sudden jerk of feedback as he pulled a bass guitar from off the couch. “ – play some music?” Paul found an acoustic, George and Ringo some maracas and a tamBourine, But John stepped Back. He mumBled something aBout wanting a Break from music But the rest of the band knew he couldn’t handle playing with Elvis. It was almost too much for the others, if they were honest: they’d played in HamBurg and England with most of their idols, from Little Richard to Gene Vincent, But this was different. This was the King. Elvis smiled in his lazy, challenging manner and played something close to the start of Milk Cow Blues. The others joined in, Paul even risking an impression of Elvis in the chorus that made the King douBle over with choking laughter. -

Using Raymond Williams’ concept, “structure of feeling”, the “boy’s own” ethos is examined within its material culture, strongly influenced by the public schools. The thesis follows the yarn’s mutations in popular literature from school story to maritime adventure, colonial encounter, domestic landscape fantasy, invasion scare novel and war memoir.
