Somehow the Virgin River gorge and that part of the Beaver Dam Moun- tains feel as though they really be- long in Utah. Most of you have probably driven through the gorge on Interstate 15 en route to/from Las Vegas or Southern California, and have ad- mired the steep rugged cliffs where the river has carved its way down. Our work is focused both in the internal relationships among representatives of Omphalodes main subgroups (and including Omphalodes verna, the type species), and their relationships with other Cynoglosseae genera that have been related to the Omphalodes group. Our phylogenetic analysis of ITS and trnL-trnF molecular markers establish close relationships of the American Omphalodes with the genus Mimophytum, and also with Cynoglossum paniculatum and Myosotidium hortensia. The southwestern European annual Omphalodes species form a discrete group deserving taxonomic recognition. We describe two new genera to reduce the paraphyly in the genus Omphalodes, accommodating the European annual species in Iberodes and Cynoglossum paniculatum in Mapuchea. The pollen of the former taxon is described in detail for the first time. Authors for correspondence ([email protected]; [email protected]) Abstract—Cryptantha, an herbaceous plant genus of the Boraginaceae, subtribe Amsinckiinae, has an American amphitropical disjunct distri- bution, found in western North America and western South America, but not in the intervening tropics. In a previous study, Cryptantha was found to be polyphyletic and was split into five genera, including a weakly supported, potentially non-monophyletic Cryptantha s. s. In this and subsequent studies of the Amsinckiinae, interrelationships within Cryptantha were generally not strongly supported and sample size was generally low. Here we analyze a greatly increased sampling of Cryptantha taxa using high-throughput, genome skimming data, in which we obtained the complete ribosomal cistron, the nearly complete chloroplast genome, and twenty-three mitochondrial genes. Our analyses have allowed for inference of clades within this complex with strong support. The occurrence of a non-monophyletic Cryptantha is confirmed, with three major clades obtained, termed here the Johnstonella/Albidae clade, the Maritimae clade, and a large Cryptantha core clade, each strongly supported as monophyletic. From these phylogenomic analyses, we assess the classification, character evolution, and phylogeographic history that elucidates the current amphitropical distribution of the group. -

Date: April 3, 2019 Re: Athos Supplemental Spring 2019 Botanical Surveys This memo report presents the methods and results for supplemental botanical surveys conducted for the Athos Solar Energy Project in March 2019 and supplements the Biological Resources Technical Report (BRTR; Ironwood 2019) which reported on field surveys conducted in 2018. BACKGROUND Botanical surveys were previously conducted in the spring and fall of 2018 for the entirety of the project site for the Athos Solar Energy Project (Athos). However, due to insufficient rain, many plant species did not germinate for proper identification during 2018 spring surveys. Fall surveys in 2018 were conducted only on a reconnaissance-level due to low levels of rain. Regional winter rainfall from the two nearest weather stations showed rainfall averaging at 0.1 inches during botanical surveys conducted in 2018 (Ironwood, 2019). In addition, gen-tie alignments have changed slightly and alternatives, access roads and spur roads have been added. PURPOSE The purpose of this survey was to survey all new additions and re-survey areas of interest including public lands (limited to portions of the gen-tie segments), parcels supporting native vegetation and habitat, and windblown sandy areas where sensitive plant species may occur. The private land parcels in current or former agricultural use were not surveyed (parcel groups A, B, C, E, and part of G). METHODS Survey Areas: The area surveyed for biological resources included the entirety of gen-tie routes (including alternates), spur roads, access roads on public land, parcels supporting native vegetation (parcel groups D and F), and areas covered by windblown sand where sensitive species may occur (portion of parcel group G). -

Mason is a monotypic genus cons1stmg of the single species A. chiricahuensis C.T. Mason. Apacheria was first described by Mason (1975) and was placed in the family Crossosomataceae based upon morphological, habitat, and pollen ultrastructural similarities to Crossosoma bigelovii Wats. Alternative systematic affiliations considered by Mason for this genus included Saxifragaceae and Rosaceae. Chemical investigations were initiated to test the accuracy of placement of this new genus in the family Crossosomataceae. Materials and Methods Dried plant materials for this investigation were generously supplied by Dr. C. T. Mason, Jr. Analytical methods were the same as reported by Tatsuno and Scogin (1978) for studies of Crossosoma. Results The chemical constituents of Apacheria chiricahuensis are shown in Ta ble 1. Also shown for comparison are the corresponding constituents from Crossosoma species reported by Tatsuno and Scogin (1978). Flavonoid compounds (flavones and flavonols) are notably absent from the leaves and flowers of Apacheria, an unusual characteristic shared with both species of Crossosoma. -

These features can be found in a variety of life forms, including annual herbaceous plants, vines, shrubs, and trees, as well as cacti) Herbaceous plants (non-woody, though there may be a woody caudex or basal stem and root -- annual growth dies back each year, resprouting in perennial or biennial plants, or the plant dies and is replaced by a new generation each year in the case of annual plants) Extremely tiny plant. Stems only about 2-6 cm tall, occasionally as much as 10 cm, leaves only 1-3 mm long (can get up to 6 mm long), fleshy, found at the plant's base or on the stems, shape generally ovate (egg-shaped), may have a blunt rounded end or a fine acute tip. The leaves are arranged oppositely, not alternately. The plant is green when new but ages to red or pink. Tiny flower (0.5- 2 mm) borne in leaf axils, usually just one per leaf pair on a pedicel (floral stem) less than 6 mm long. Two or 3 petals and 3 or 4 sepals. Flowers February to May. Annual herb. Found in open areas, in rocky nooks and crannies, and sometimes in vernal ponds (temporary pools that form after a rain and then slowly evaporate). Crassula connata (Crassulaceae): pygmy stonecrop or pygmy-weed or sand pygmyweed Leaves converted into scales along stems, which are arranged alternately and overlap. -

Taxonomic Key to the Saskatchewan Cryptantha Sarah Vinge-Mazer (Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre) on behalf of the Botanical Assessment Working Group Introduction The Botanical Assessment Working Group has been working on placing Saskatchewan’s two perennial Cryptantha species since around 2011, following many questions and confusion from the local botanical community. The use of the name Cryptantha macounii was the source of much of the confusion, for which an explanation is now provided. The name Cryptantha macounii (=Oreocarya macounii) is a true synonym for Cryptantha celosioides (see Simpson). In Saskatchewan (and apparently Montana, see Lesica 2012) this name has instead been applied to Cryptantha spiculifera material. Furthering the confusion, the name Cryptantha nubigena has been applied to both C. spiculifera and C. celosioides in Saskatchewan and appears regularly in older taxonomic keys. The name C. macounii has to be maintained for C. spiculifera material in Sask. for now until the SKCDC can update its database with the name. C. spiculifera has been included as a synonym for C. macounii in the SKCDC vascular plant species list. This key was compiled from several sources and was written to clarify the placement of the Saskatchewan Cryptantha species and serve as interim information until the Flora of North America (FNA) on Boraginaceae is published. It is accurate to the best of our knowledge. Notes • Our two perennial species are retained in Cryptantha in this key but are expected to be moved under the genus Oreocarya in the FNA treatment (see Simpson) • The Manual of Montana Vascular Plants (Lesica 2012) provides species descriptions for all species that occur in Sask.
