Tiago is a well-proportioned design. The front mesh grille with sharp looking headlamps. The Tiago looks stylish with an equal in proportion glass and metal area for the side profile. The Tiago doesn't look tall despite loads of head room inside. The blacked out centre door pillar (B-pillar) and a crisp line rises as you move to the rear. At the rear also, there is a neatly designed back. The Tiago can be missed out in a crowd, when seen in white, silver or grey colour options.

The front of the Celerio is a typical Suzuki one and similar to all new-generation Suzukis and is a bit curve to depict a smiling face. The headlamps and the bumper are sharp, giving it a modern look. The sides show a prominent shoulder line and base line, which help to mellow down the tall- boy look of the car. The rear is quite flat and reminds one of the A-Star.

On the design front, the Hyundai Grand i10 follows in the mould of Hyundai’s Fluidic 2.0 design philosophy. The Grand i10 somewhat tall boyish in design. It looks subtle and it does seem practical and spacious.

Tata Tiago Vs Maruti Celerio Vs Hyundai Grand i10 Interiors

4 / 17 MotorOctane Indian Cars/Bikes News and Review https://motoroctane.com

Interiors of the Tiago are well laid out. If you ask me, it is better than the Bolt and Zest too. The complete styling looks premium. The cluster is the same as on the Zest, only with an extra cover on top. All the features are there what you expect from a small car. Things are ergonomically placed and when there is sufficient space too. In fact, space isn't much of an issue in any of the three .

The Celerio gets a black and beige interior theme. The instrument cluster is illuminated by amber coloured lighting, which is soft on the eyes and offers a multi-information display which gives out info such as distance to empty and fuel consumption. The steering controls comprise of audio and bluetooth control buttons. Illuminated door sills add some flair and there are amber coloured LED lamps below the dashboard, that illuminate the footwell and is a nice touch.

The Grand i10 in comparison does feel premium with the black and beige interiors along with the top notch plastics and a sophisticated instrument panel. The styling is basic and easy on your eyes. Hyundai is clearly targeting the mature audience with this . The three-spoke steering wheel comes with audio controls for music system and calling too. The Grand i10’s styling is much different from most of the competition. The round air-con vents are a refresh when it comes to the styling. The piano black finish on the gear box and the cool blue backlit interiors are soothing and aren’t harsh at night.

Tiago Engines

The Tiago comes with two engine options. The first one is a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Revotron that produces 84bhp of power. This engine seemed quite peppy and revs well upto its redline at 6500rpm, however it is pretty noisy and that noise intrudes into to cabin as well. There are two driving modes in it – Eco and City, where the former is to extract better fuel economy. The second engine is a 1.05-litre 3-cylinder Revotorq diesel unit producing 69bhp.

Celerio Engines

The Maruti Celerio is also available with two engine options – a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder K10B petrol and a 0.8-litre, 2-cylinder DDiS diesel. The petrol engine is very responsive and a smooth, refined mill. The diesel lacks power on paper only as it has good driveability. We loved the way it drove in city and the throttle response is just fantastic.

The diesel is a compelling buy only if fuel efficiency is of prime importance. Only at ideal is when the Celerio diesel is noisy, else it is a fantastic engines that reaches 120km/hr without much of a struggle. Transmission options and a five-speed manual and a five-speed AMT (Auto Gear Shift), however this is available only on the petrol variant.

Grand i10 Engines

The Grand i10 has three engine options. A 1.1 U2 diesel engine, which is a new unit. It delivers 69 bhp of power and has decent drivability. The 1.2-litre petrol engine on the Grand i10 is the Kappa engine that even powered the old i10. It has a power of 81bhp. The engine its quite peppy but one needs to work a bit harder to extract some good performance from this engine. The Hyundai Grand i10 also has a 1.1-litre, three-cylinder engine that churns out 70bhp of power. In terms of outright power it lags a bit . The power delivery though is linear and doesn’t give a sudden rush of torque.

Tata Tiago Vs Maruti Celerio Vs Hyundai Grand i10 Ride

10 / 17 MotorOctane Indian Cars/Bikes News and Review https://motoroctane.com

What impressed us the most in the Tiago, was its ride quality. Frankly, we weren’t expecting that. The car really rides well and absorbs undulations, potholes and bad roads with aplomb, something which is very European in nature (similar to cars like , Renault and VW). The suspension is set on the softer side and works well in the city. The handling is suited more to city conditions. The steering feedback is fine and the steering weighs up well when speeds rise.

11 / 17 MotorOctane Indian Cars/Bikes News and Review https://motoroctane.com

The Maruti Celerio is well suited to city driving conditions. The ride is pliant and the suspension felt well balanced, not too stiff nor soft. The steering too is well-weighted and not overly assisted like some other cars in the segment and this feels good. The clutch too feels pretty light. While the engine sound intrudes inside the cabin, it gets easily muffled with the audio system on. Overall, the driving dynamics are better than just acceptable.

12 / 17 MotorOctane Indian Cars/Bikes News and Review https://motoroctane.com

The Hyundai Grand i10 has a supple ride quality but feels a bit unsettled on bad roads. In terms of handling, the Grand i10 has some body roll when you change directions rapidly. The Grand i10’s steering wheel is much better than the previously sold Hyundais. This feels a lot more connected and it is a lot more fun to drive as well. The only downside to the steering is that it is heavy at low speeds and gets lighter as speeds increase.

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Celerio vs Hyundai Grand i10 Verdict

The Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Celerio have established themselves as cars that provide good value. They are relatively easy on the pocket compared to larger hatchbacks and offer largely similar levels of equipment too. They offer a variety of engine options and also have an option of an automatic. Both these companies are right up there when it comes to service support and have a large network across the country.

Tata Tiago prices start from INR 3.71 lakhs and goes upto 6.42 lakhs for the fully loaded diesel variant (on-road Mumbai), undercutting the top end diesel variants of Celerio and Grand i10 by INR 65,000 and INR 1.95 lakhs, respectively. With these prices, the Tiago clearly emerges as the most value for money car amongst the three.

Our pick is the Tiago diesel which has a more refined engine than the other two cars, combined with good drivability and great fuel efficiency. The only thing Tiago currently lacks is the option of an automatic transmission. Once the Celerio gets updated, it will have a chance to get back into the game. Soon, the Tiago prices will shoot up and maybe there will be a change in situation.
