The Duality of the Composer-Performer by Marek Pasieczny Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Arts Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Supervisors: Prof. Stephen Goss ©Marek Pasieczny 2015 The duality of the composer-performer A portfolio of original compositions, with a supplementary dissertation ‘Interviews Project: Thirteen Composers on Writing for the Guitar’. Abstract The main focus of this submission is the composition portfolio which consists of four pieces, each composed several times over for different combinations of instruments. The purpose of this PhD composition portfolio is threefold. Firstly, it is to contribute to the expansion of the classical guitar repertoire. Secondly, it is to defy the limits imposed by the technical facilities of the physical instrument and bring novelty to its playability. Third and most importantly, it is to overcome the challenges of being a guitarist-composer. Due to a high degree of familiarity with the traditional guitar repertoire, and possessing intimate knowledge of the instrument, it is often difficult for me as a guitarist-composer to depart from habitual tendencies to compose truly innovative works for the instrument. I have thus created a compositional approach whereby I separated my role as a composer from my role as a guitarist in an attempt to overcome this challenge. I called it the ‘dual-role’ approach, comprising four key strategies that I devised which involves (1) borrowing ‘New Music’ practices to defy traditionalist guitar tendencies which are often conservative and insular; (2) adapting compositional materials to different instrumentations; and expanding on (3) the guitar technique as well as; (4) the guitar’s inventory of extended techniques. -

The methodology, contextually indebted to the dialogues of site specific art, performance, and sound improvisation, has emerged as a multi-disciplinary one, informed in part by the study of those artists from the 1960s onwards who actively sought to resist the gallery system. The practice has driven the thesis in developing and continuously testing the requirement to respond uniquely to chosen sites. By using relevant references, instruments, and sonified materials, a compulsion to convey something of the particularity of the site’s associations through sound, is performed on site. In the course of considering the wider implications of a site through both the sound performances and the critical writing, I propose that there are essentially three aspects to identify when working with sound on site. -

Music, Electronic Media and Culture About the volume: There has never been greater public exposure to the musical products of electronic technology than there is today. Pubs, clubs, restaurants, banks and shops offer new environments for the experience of musical sound, in addition to the conventional concert hall. There are now many different ways to make music, and, thanks to the loudspeaker, many different ways of listening. This new world of musical sound and the questions it poses are explored in the nine essays that comprise this volume. At the heart of the collection is the myriad of confusing and exciting possibilities that are raised by sound that we hear but whose source we cannot see – the acousmatic. Part One of the book challenges the received wisdom of generations of writing on the acousmatic, providing new perspectives including an ecological view of human perception. The essays in Part Two explore the ways in which the history and plurality of culture has itself become the object of musical creativity in the form of sampling or plundering. In Part Three the potential fields of sound perception offered by the imagination are probed and given a ‘textual’ voice in Katharine Norman’s concluding essay to the volume. This uses the text itself as a medium for expressing the multi-layered reflections that a listener may have to ‘the work’ of music. A composer and writer, he was first prize winner at the Bourges Electroacoustic Awards in 1985 for his work Time Past IV. -
