Fellow Members,

We have a few updates on the Members’ Communications front.

The Club website has been aesthetically revamped. If you have checked our Club website over the last three months, you should have noticed that it looks significantly different to better reflect our Club brand.

Also, our Club magazine has taken another subtle revamp in its look and style. We’ve recently taken on board two new staff, namely, senior marketing & communications executive Crystal Ng, the survey. Chef Chan Shun Wong has always had a love of cooking. Growing up in Hong Kong, in a Cantonese family, he often cooked for his family, preparing delicious dishes. As he got older, he decided to pursue his passion for cooking professionally and joined Hong Kong’s vibrant culinary scene.

He spent 19 years working his way up the culinary ladder, working with various chefs and learning new techniques and polishing his skills, always intent on creating and serving only the most authentic Cantonese cuisine.

In 2010, Chef Chan moved to Singapore and for the past four years, he was the Chinese Executive Chef at Peach Blossoms at Marina Mandarin Hotel, where he cooked for a wide range of VIPs including former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.

The Team representing The Tanglin Club for the IA Game

IA Christmas Challenge 2015 - IA Christmas Challenge 2015 - Winning Pair Fatema takes the bottle for the Highest Individual Score

2015 Championship Prize Winners

December is the month where we give the sinews and tendons a break from the rigours of thumping tables. The Gods of Balut also tend to hear fewer pleas for some combination or the other. This tranquillity was jolted by the yowling of 48 Baluteers who descended on the Indian Association on 23 December 2015 for a Christmas invitational session.

The 48 from different clubs shattered the evening calm of 3 cricket fields and sent earthworms scurrying for cover. Our Club sent 3 pairs – Fatema, Bansi, Neena, Zoeb, Sethuraman and Anand. At the end of a riotous session, our 6 Baluteers hauled away 2 bottles of wine for spot prizes (Anand and Fatema). A Chivas Regal went to Fatema for totting up the highest individual score, and 2 bottles of Chivas to Fatema and Zoeb for topping the pairs column. The Section is looking forward to helping them with their haul!

The Balut Section wishes all Members a wonderful 2016, and here's to seeing more of you trying your hand with us at our monthly games.

BRIDGE TRIP TO BANGKOK UPCOMING EVENT: HONG BAO BRIDGE (TEA) As always, our Bridge ladies are most enthusiastic to travel Friday, 19 February overseas for game exposure. Playing an away-game 12.30pm and with foreign opponents certainly contributes to us Raffles Room achieving more confidence and also developing mental Register at The Card Room strength during matches.

So it was on the Monday morning of 7 December when thirteen very excited ladies met to board a Tiger Air flight to Bangkok. This has always been a fun city to visit as Thai food and shopping are both extremely satisfying.

We were very pleased with the Renaissance Club level rooms which Sonia had cleverly sourced as the location couldn't have been better – right smack in the middle of good food and shopping outlets and with the Chitlom station a stone's throw away.

The next day, we played our first game at the Polo Club where eighteen pairs participated. We are pleased that Lily Lim and Tay Lian Pheck did us proud by coming in first. Well done, ladies.

Our 2nd match was against the Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RSBC) and this time, there were 29 pairs. We were not so lucky there but pleased that Dora Tan and Jyoti Singh came in 6th (best amongst the Tanglin Club ladies that day).

As one of our ladies summed up – it was a trip full of fun, laughter and manic shopping.

It is on these trips abroad that we cultivate good bonding and camaraderie besides benefitting from the invaluable experience provided.

DARTS CHRISTMAS PARTY

As usual, it had been a wonderful Christmas time at the Tanglin Club. The magnificent Christmas tree, the eye- catching red and white tiny shop selling goodies, the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, and all the fun-filled activities contributed to the warm feeling of goodwill and festivity in the air.

In the midst of it all, the Darts Christmas Party kicked off with a wonderful dinner at the newly refurbished Raffles Room. Enjoying a scrumptious dinner mingling with friends was indeed a great pleasure for all Darters. Not to forget, the ladies looked their best in their stylish, striking attires.

The music and the melodious songs of the Tanglin Club band attracted many to dance and enjoy the night. All in all, it was a great Christmas party with lucky draw prizes.

We would like to thank everyone at the Sports Section for making it a success.

Our Christmas game on the Tampines Course at Tanah Merah Country Golf Club attracted 57 participants, 15 of them were ladies who were all dressed up in Christmas gear for the occasion. Men, on the other hand, were supposed to wear red shirts. The weather conditions for the game were perfect and the morning breeze was more than welcome.

The format for this event was as usual – stableford with individual handicaps provided in most cases by the Singapore Golfers Association, and in some cases by trust. We welcomed everybody in the good spirit of Christmas. Champion Mr George Liew

The registered gross scores varied as usual from the seventies to well over hundreds, and the computed stableford winners were awarded with prizes following a very lovely, sumptuous Christmas luncheon spread with glogg, beer and red wine.

COSMOPOLITAN BEAM SUNTORY On 28 November 2016, the Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) hosted the Cosmopolitan Beam Suntory Squash SQUASH LEAGUE GALA DINNER League Gala Dinner. The event was well-attended by the Cosmo Squash Members from the Tanglin Club who took up the maximum allocation of 20 invited players and guests. The event was held at the Island Clubhouse of SICC in what can only be described as a huge ballroom admirably decorated for the event.

The whole night was hosted by a professional presenter who kept the night moving along at a good pace interspersed with plenty of humour. Each team had been invited to participate with some form of entertainment and a few clubs did not disappoint, with perhaps The American Club making the most effort with a live sacking of their current team captain and re-selection of a new candidate, mimicking the presidential elections. Excellent effort was also put in by the British Club and the Hollandse Club with some very humorous video footage. The whole night was a superb success with many people commenting on the great organisation and generous hospitality afforded by SICC.

The Tanglin Club players were well-represented and could celebrate another fantastic result in coming second in the Cosmo League, just the pipped at the post by the Hollandse Club at the last match of the tournament. Well done to all those Cosmo players who made tremendous efforts throughout the season and I’m sure we all look forward to next year’s Cosmo league which will be hosted by the Hollandse Club.

TENNIS YEAR END BASH Club itself for making this happen. I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

That night, Amit Bhalla and Andrew O'Brien – two from the men's team – took home the major prizes from nearly 40 on offer that night.

I don't know how we can keep setting the bar higher, but am sure there are ways. That goes for every event we have or are planning for next year. I encourage your support for our events here. The Sub-Committee puts in a lot of effort to make each and every event a success, and at the same time ensuring that we keep the rest – who choose not to participate – happy.

There will be regular activities such as our coaching sessions with professionals from Total Swimming. We will be looking at enhancing these with regular gatherings to hear from experts on a regular basis.
