Orienteering at Brighton Woods
ORIENTEERING AT BRIGHTON WOODS • There are eight numbered posts (controls) for the orienteering course at Brighton Woods. Each has a number that corresponds to the number on the Brighton Woods Orienteering Map, but they may be found in any order. • It is easier to go directly from control to control when there is less ground cover: late fall, winter, and early spring. PLOTTING THE COURSE • Find control #1 on the map.(The Sports Field.) • On the map, line up one edge of the compass from where you are (Control #1: Sports Field) to where you want to go, (Control # 2: Southwest End of Pipeline Clearing) making sure the direction-of-travel arrow faces your destination point. (This is the first secret of orienteering.) • Rotate the housing of the compassso that the gridlines are parallel to the North - South gridlines on the orienteering map. The Role of Historical Con Sciousness in Rock Art
PAPERS XXIII Valcamonica Symposium 2009 LINKING THE PAST AND THE PRESENT: THE ROLE OF HISTORICAL CON- SCIOUSNESS IN ROCK ART INTERPRETATION ANNE JODON COLE* ABSTRACT Scandinavian prehistory and rock art images provide an extreme diachronic account of a now silent signifier still si- gnifying a cultural communication more than four thousand years later. A focus is cast on the rock art of two distin- ct cultures in Scandinavia: Alta, Norway and Tanum, Sweden. Gadamer’s thesis that all understanding is historically conditioned is brought in: 1) understanding can never be free of prejudice, and 2) understanding involves the union of the observer and the observed, leading to the “fusing of horizons.” Rock art images provide a graphic understanding of how a cultural image can take on various interpretations depending on the mindset of the viewer. An interpreter of rock art or intercultural communication can easily misinterpret a message due to preconceptions. Historical consciousness allows understanding the past on its own terms and within its own horizon-not in the terms of contemporary society. RESUME Les images de l’art rupestre et de la préhistoire de Scandinavie fournissent un large compte-rendu diachronique d’un signifiant actuel- lement silencieux mais qui signifie encore une communication culturelle plus de quatre mille ans plus tard. Okrant Project Economist Project Director The Institute for New Hampshire Studies Plymouth State University January 2014 THE NEW HAMPSHIRE SKI INDUSTRY, 2012-2013: ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE STATE'S ECONOMY Executive Summary It was estimated that a total of 3.26 million people visited the ski areas in New Hampshire for recreational purposes during the period between May 2012 and April 2013. It was also estimated that approximately $359.0 million was directly spent at and away from ski areas within the state. This $359.0 million direct spending represents 7.9 percent of total traveler spending in the state and 16.2 percent of traveler spending in the state’s northern and western five regions during the period between May 2012 and April 2013. The share of skier spending is even greater during the winter five month skiing season; direct skier spending at and away from ski areas was $300.4 million, which represents a whopping 45.3 percent of total traveler spending in the state’s five northern and western travel regions during the winter five month skiing season. A combined total of direct and secondary spending was approximately $1.1 billion. The annual average employment of 11,067 jobs was supported by direct and secondary spending at and away from ski areas during the period between May 2012 and April 2013. -

General Guidelines From the NM Ski Safety Act (State Law § 24-15-9): Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride, and unload safely. From the NM Ski Safety Act (State Law § 24-15-9): Every passenger shall have the duty to conduct himself carefully and not to wear skis/snowboards without properly securing retention devices. CHAPTER 2 The Backdrop for Success: Finland’s Context and Configuration 1 Introduction Finland’s context plays a strong role in its outcomes in PISA. Following Phillips and Schweisfurth (2006) and Halls’ (1970) approaches to comparative educa- tion, this chapter explores Finland’s historical and social context in order to better understand the country’s educational achievements. An education sys- tem, as a “living thing,” according to Sadler (in Higginson, 1979, p. 49), merits investigation within its context. The Finns need and deserve more than a brief description to explain and clarify their unique qualities. The question, “Who are the Finns?” necessitates a long answer: But where does Finland belong? Is it a Baltic state, like Estonia? Is it part of Scandinavia, like Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, with which it is linked and with which it has such close ties? Is it really a part of Russia? Or is it something different from all these? A great part of Finnish history has been devoted to trying to solve this problem. (Bacon, 1970, p. 16) This chapter strives to clarify the Finnish context, and therefore how this even- tually influenced high PISA outcomes in all administrations of the survey. It also explains the Finnish education system after exploration of “things out- side the school system” (Sadler, in Higginson, 1979, p. 49).
