The Syrian refugee crisis, which is currently being experienced in European countries is said to be the one of the largest forced migrations since World War II. More and more refugees are heading towards European countries which are renowned to have good living conditions despite the perilous journey wherein thousands have died and face very inhumane conditions in getting to their destination. Because of this, the European Union has begun to undergo measures to help control the influx of refugees, most of which are at the cost of these refugees' safety. The protests at first simply wanted the Government to release the boys including political prisoners, but later began to evolve towards anti-regime tones which targeted the emergency laws, poor socio economic conditions, corruption, police brutality, and indiscriminate detention (Abboud, 2016). This paper demonstrates that pro-Russian parties in Eastern Europe tend to have electorates with significantly more Euroskeptic attitudes than voter bases of mainstream parties. Importantly, support for pro-Russian parties is not related to an individual’s ideological (right or left) leanings. Because of their Euroskeptic attitudes, social groups supporting pro-Russian parties are far more susceptible to disinformation and, in particular, the anti-EU narratives spread by the Kremlin. These findings explain the endorsement of pro-Russian narratives and social attitudes which are indirectly favorable to the Kremlin by political leaders whose electorates harbor anti-Western sympathies. It also sheds light on the nature of Russia’s information opera- tions that seem to be opportunistic rather than ideological in nature, but also limited in scope by the structural conditions in targeted societies. So are the changes of the core of democratic governance: election. In Slovakia, a change of electoral rules for parliamentary elections is suggested and discussed repeatedly in recent decades, without any foreseeable reform. On the other hand, the regional governors’ electoral rules were changed rather swiftly, without a proper discussion. Our study contributes to the debate on the effects of electoral reforms on voting behavior and election results. The aim of this study is to investigate possible consequences of two relevant electoral reform proposals in Slovakia. Using experimental design we compare the effects of different electoral rules in parliamentary and regional elections. The findings reveal that people show little signs of increased strategic behavior in case of one-round majoritarian system, when compared to two round majoritarian system. Simulating parliamentary elections, we compared a list-based proportional system with the experimental, limited vote system. Our findings show that the latter decreases the electoral success of parties based on one strong leader, while still preserving relatively high degree of proportionality of the political system. Admittedly, our experiments used student samples and thus the generalization is not without limits, and discussed in the text. Yet, this study provides at least partial evidence on whether intended change of electoral rules in Slovakia can bring the expected results which are used as arguments in favor of the reforms. -

State reactions on radical movements in Slovakia This study aims to map State reactions to radical movements in the Slovak republic since 1990. When we refer to State, we refer to all State, self-government and judicial bodies: central government and national parliament, regional governments, local governments, police and courts. 1990 – 2003: no public activities, no media attention, no specific state policy The first radical movements and ideas penetrated Slovakia in the late 1980s years of 20 th century and especially after the fall of communism in 1989. These movements evolved from an underground music scene whose foundations were based on a mixture of music and racist ideology. During the early period of this extremist ‘scene’, the regular targets of hatred were Slovakia’s ethnic minority groups such as Roma, Czech nationals and Jews. After break-up of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the situation changed, in the sense that Czechs ceased to be considered enemies. The radical movements began to find their heroes in Slovak history. Between 1939 and 1945, the leaders of the Slovak republic offered a unified ideology of racism and nationalism. The tomb of Jozef Tiso, who was president of the Slovak republic during the Second World War, became the site for regular meetings for extreme Right-wing groups, particularly on 14 th of March each year (the anniversary of 1939 declaration of the Slovak republic). An organisation named Slovensky Narodny Front (Slovak National Front) , made up of ‘skinheads’, is one such group. But the Ministry of Interior prohibited the registration of this organisation, due primarily to having the word “front” as part of its name (it sounded ‘too militaristic’). -

SLOVAK REPUBLIC 2020 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution provides for freedom of religious belief and affiliation and states the country is not bound to any particular faith. Registration requirements for religious groups include the need to present a petition with signatures of at least 50,000 adherents, which members of some religious groups considered discriminatory. Some groups registered as civic associations in order to function. Government officials and members of parliament (MPs) from both the government coalition and opposition parties continued to make anti-Muslim statements, and several political parties amplified anti-Muslim messages in their campaigns for the February parliamentary election. Authorities continued to criminally prosecute some members of the People’s Party Our Slovakia (LSNS) for defaming minority religious beliefs and Holocaust denial. In October, a court sentenced the party’s chairman to four-and-a-half years in prison after convicting him of an act of anti- Semitism. In January, the annual state subsidy to government-recognized religious communities increased by approximately 10 percent. In January, the Islamic Foundation in Slovakia reported what it called an Islamophobic attack against a Muslim student on a public bus in Bratislava, reportedly triggered by the student’s use of an Islamic greeting in a telephone conversation. The Muslim community continued to report anti-Muslim hate speech on social media, which it attributed mostly to inflammatory public statements by politicians portraying Muslim refugees as an existential threat to the country’s society. According to a survey by a local nongovernmental organization (NGO), more than 70 percent of citizens would find it unacceptable if a Muslim from Saudi Arabia moved into their neighborhood. -

Voters elected the head of government, Prime Minister Robert Fico of the Smer Party, to a four-year term in 2006. President Ivan Gasparovic, the head of state, was reelected for a five-year term during the year. Both elections were considered free and fair. Eight political parties, three of which form the governing coalition, sit in the National Council. Civilian authorities generally maintained effective control of the security forces. The government generally respected the human rights of its citizens; however, there were problems in some areas. Notable human rights problems included some continuing reports of police mistreatment of Romani suspects and lengthy pretrial detention; restrictions on freedom of religion; concerns about the integrity of the judiciary, corruption in national government, local government, and government health services; violence against women and children; trafficking in women and children; and societal discrimination and violence against Roma and other minorities.
