Lou was a Geordie, born and bred in Gateshead, Tyneside. The family sang at home – hymns, cowboy songs, ballads, music hall, opera, and everything in between. Get- ting involved in the skiffle craze of the early ‘sixties, she then went on to become one of the founders of the Bridge Folk Club, in Newcastle upon Tyne. Unequaled as a singer of the “big” ballads, Lou also had a great repertoire of maritime songs, songs from her Irish ancestry, and of course the songs of Tyneside – mining, fox-hunting, etc. Plus a great appreciation of music in all its forms. She was a grand harmony singer too. I first met Lou in 1965, and she and the Young Tradition immediately formed a mutual admiration society. The folk scene was booming: every town had its weekly folk club, some more than one. We would meet and sing together at clubs, concerts and festivals. In 1966, she moved to America, living in New York, Massachusetts, San Francisco, and Washington State. For a few years, she sang with the Clancy Brothers. A few years ago, she returned to her birth town of Gateshead, where she died of cancer on 9 August 2013. One cannot overstate the influence of Lou’s singing on a whole generation of revival singers of English traditional folk songs. Her playing of the English concertina (she pioneered it as an accompanying instrument) was a prime example of how it should be done – never overpowering the song. As well as being a terrific singer, she had a wealth of knowledge about the songs and the singers from whom they came, which she willingly shared with audiences and admirers. She would also tell some tales from the Pitman’s Bible (stories told in Pitmatic, the idiom of the Tyneside pits) which were hilarious. The voice is silenced, but the legacy remains. I and many other revival singers owe her a debt that will be repaid as we continue to sing the old songs for new generations. So from one of Louisa Jo’s signature songs, “The Parting Glass”: Good night, and joy be with you all. Heather Wood [This was also printed in Sing Out!]

Gail Levine-Fried sent in the following: "Longtime Pinewoods member, Gail Levine- Fried, received the "Lifetime Achievement Award" presented to her on May 22nd by the New York Metropolitan Recreation Organization (METRO) at their annual Awards Dinner. The award is in recognition of Gail's many contributions to the profession of Therapeutic Recreation and her significant achievements in Access and Inclusion for individuals with disabilities in public recreation over the course of her 45 year career in the field. Last year, Gail retired from her position as Associate Professor and Pro- Continued on next page - 8 - Louisa Jo Killen (aka Louis Killen) 1934 – 2013 A remembrance. I first met Louis in 1966 at Pinewoods Camp. That is and will remain the identity that is fixed in my mind. There will be many biographies of Lou, most by people who know a lot more than I do, but I have much to say about the music and sing- ing of this seminal figure of British Folk Song of the 20th century. I see there are already a bunch of scholarly remembrances of Louis on the web, which I hope people may seek out. I will not attempt any scholarly biography; this is personal. Louis had met May Gadd (Gay) in England in the Spring, and Gay said, “If you come to the US, look me up.” Lou did. As it was August, Gay was at Pinewoods Camp. She said on the phone to come down to the camp, and Lou was there for I think the last two or three days of Folk Music Week. He was at the camp for the full week the following year (1967), and I well remember his singing only one song on the last night concert, "The Flying Cloud", in an absolutely electrifying performance. In those years I was writing album liner notes for the country Blues label Yazoo Records (founded and run by Nick Perls, a friend since childhood) and I remember one night, at a party or something, Louis picked up a guitar and began playing and singing country blues, particularly some tracks from Blind Lemon Jefferson. It was hard to believe I was hearing what I was hearing. But of course Louis' genius was first and foremost in traditional English songs and ballads. Louis was a total master of his craft, telling stories in song that were absolutely riveting. Many of Louis’ personal friends were also masters. Joe Heaney, an “ex- pat” from Ireland to New York; Mike Waterson, who I thought was one of the real greats, though in a very low-key style, so different from Louis; Norman Kennedy, also an ex-pat Scot living in Vermont. As I think about it, we had living in the US, three of the finest singers of British and Irish tradition to be found anywhere: Joe, Norman and Louis. Staggering. It is astonishing to me the number and greatness of the living resources that were among us. We needed only get Mike Waterson here to complete the home run. His last marriage was to Margaret Osika, who met Louis when I brought Margaret to a concert. She was learning some music from Jan Oosting, and they both lived in Suffolk County about 60 miles out of New York. She wanted to know more and asked me. We were about to present Louis in a concert, so I suggested she come. They were married very soon after. Margaret remained very close to Lou right to the end. The loss is hard to accept. Jerry Epstein The Folk Process- Continued gram Director at Kingsborough Community College (CUNY, Brooklyn) where she had been a tenured faculty member for the past 19 years. Gail continues to teach at the college part-time and also is a certified Yoga teacher (RYT). She and husband, Bob enjoy traveling and spent a week in Iceland (their 3rd visit there) and a week in Vienna, Austria, in July. Gail is currently exhibiting some of her art work in the Gal- lery of Saint Francis College (180 Remsen St., Brooklyn Heights) as part of the show of Art Work by the Brooklyn Streetcar Artists Group. Gail looks forward to enjoying more folk music with other Club members now that she has more leisure." The Society’s web page: www.folkmusicny.org - 9 - Eileen Pentel It is hard to believe, but summer is over. At least we have much music to look forward to. The usual Irish Traditional Music sessions continue as do the Folk Open Sing and the Shanty Sing. Our new series Legends starts with Danny Kalb. The Park Slope Bluegrass & Old time Jamboree and a Singing Party in Sheepshead Bay are also this month. For special fun come to the Medieval Festival where we will have a booth. Stop by and/or let us know if you want to help out (see info inside). Best of all, it is time to register for the Fall weekend. Remember there are scholarships available including a special offer if you have not been to one of the last three week- ends. There are a limited number of these available. As always, it will be great fun. We have sad news. Louisa Jo Killen has passed away. She will be missed greatly. See inside for more about her. Thank you to the volunteers who helped with the newsletter mailing—Marilyn Suffet, Isabel Goldstein, Fran Levine, Marcus Tiemann , Lynn Cole, Eileen Pentel, and Don Wade. Maybe we will see you next time! (October 1—come and help out! See page 3.)
