Two Black Sheep & a Stallion house concert; Wed., June 10th; 8pm Established in 2004, Two Black Sheep and a Stal- lion is a traditional English folk group based in York singing unaccompanied traditional English songs, shanties and working songs. In addition to appearing at festivals and folk clubs, they are mainstays of the Friday night pub sings in York. Ron Akehurst (Prof. Sheffield University): Raised in close proximity to Rottingdean resulting in an early introduction to English traditional folk music courtesy of the Copper family. Ron has a vast reper- toire of songs collected over the years, an incredible memory for tunes and words and a powerful voice honed in the noisy pubs from Cumbria to San Francisco! Peter Outhart (Electrician): The token northerner in the trio! Graduated from York University, and took up the tools to do a proper job! He toured the local folk clubs in late 1960s early 1970s. Martin Bartlett (Teacher, Archaeologist Ret.): An Essex boy, trained as a teacher and taught in Lincolnshire before moving to York to read Medieval Studies at the university and staying to work for the York Archaeological Trust. Martin is the musi- cian of the trio, a mean fiddler, he performed in many clubs and ceilidhs with Silver Birch, a Grimsby group. Donation: $15. Members: $12. At the home of Joy Bennett, 111-39 76th Road, Forest Hills, NY 11375; Information: 718- 575-1906 Intermediate Southern Appalachian Fiddle Workshop Saturday, June 13, 11:00am (Advance Registration Required) Become a better fiddler and get ready to have fun! This workshop, led by Cathy Mason, will explore the details of southern old-time fiddling. Through the magic of bowing, ornaments, tunings and simple variations, we will move beyond learning the basic tune and focus on teaching the flowing, rhythmic, driving energy that produces that irresistible groove of the southern, old-time sound. Incredibly, this will be done without the use of written music! Participants should have a basic acquaintance with the instrument and know the D, G and A scales. Cathy Mason is an extraordinary fiddler living in New England who plays both old-time and Cajun styles. She plays in several bands and regularly gives fiddle workshops. You must register in advance, because space is limited. Your registration info & check must be received no later than Saturday, June 6th. If the class is not full by then, it will be canceled. Fee: $22 members of FMSNY, $25 non-members. Send payment by check made out to FMSNY to: Alan Friend, Education Chairman, 440 Fifth Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215 (Be sure to put Street, not Avenue). Folklore Symposium: Sabine Baring-Gould, A Dear Lover of Songs Thur., June 18th; 7:30 pm A session with Martin Graebe, consultant to the Wren Trust (the repository of the papers of the collector), tutor at the annual Baring-Gould Song School, and secretary of the Traditional Song Forum. Sabine Baring-Gould was the first of the British large-scale collectors of folk song in the late nineteenth century and remains the major source of collected song from Devon and Cornwall. Despite his significance, he has remained something of an enigma. In 1992, the discovery of previ- ously unknown manuscripts and notebooks sparked a new study of his work and its significance. Martin Graebe is a major authority on Baring-Gould’s life and work and in this presentation he talks about his approach to collecting songs and about the men and women from whom he collected. He will also consider his working relationships with contemporary collectors such as Cecil Sharp and Lucy Broadwood. At the CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Ave, Manhattan 10016 (between 34 & 35 St), Room 3491. Admission: $10 for Pinewoods Club members, general public $12. Further info (718) 429-3437. Eileen Pentel We have lots of events in June. Our last free series concert will be held on June 19th—Annie and Hedonists. You are in for a real treat. Unfortunately, due to rising costs, starting after the summer, the series concerts will be $10 for members and, as usual, $20 for the general public. The summer Sea Music Concerts will be on Tuesday nights in June. In addition, there will be a Two Black Sheep & a Stallion house concert, an old-time Fiddle Workshop and Jam, Martin & Shan Graebe workshop on Sabine Baring-Gould, the Chantey Sing, and the Sacred Harp Sing. A green walking tour of the Musical East Village followed by a sing around at the Yippie Café is a first for us and should be a lot of fun. Also special is Make Music Day on June 21st followed by a singing party. This is the second time we are participating in this city wide/world wide event and this year we will be at a quieter location and will have a PA system. There’s even a covered area in case it rains! See pages 2-5 for more details on any of the above. Remember some of these events require pre-registration. Lenore Greenberg has been doing the Events Calendar for many years and has decided to pass on the torch to someone else. Perhaps you would like to be that someone else!
