Sunnyside Singers Club: every Wednesday, 8-11pm Come join us every Wednesday at 8pm for a 3­hour pub style sing­around. All songs are welcome, as are acoustic instruments. Co­sponsored with, and held, at the Aubergine Cafe, 49­22 Skillman Avenue at the corner of 50th Street in Woodside, Queens. Occasionally there is a featured guest performer for part of the evening. Folk Open Sing: Wednesdays, Sept. 6th & Oct. 4th; 7-10pm Join us on the first Wednesday of each month for an open sing. Bring your voice, instruments, friends, neighbors, and children. Drop by for a couple of songs or the whole evening. At the Ethical Culture Society, 53 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn (near 2nd St.). Info: 212­695­5924. Park Slope Bluegrass & O­T Jamboree, September 15th­16th The sounds of banjos, fiddles, mandolins, and big upright basses echo through the “hills and hollers” of Brooklyn. The Jamboree, held at the historic Old Stone House and J.J. Byrne Park, starts with a bluegrass concert on Friday night at 8 pm (doors open at 7:30 pm). Saturday includes a full day of activities, with workshops in banjo, fiddle, harmony singing, autoharp, and more, plus all day jamming and an evening concert; food will be offered on site on Saturday. Saturday afternoon is 12:30 to dark and the concert is 6­10pm. We are co­ th sponsoring this event held at 336 Third Street, in J.J. Shanty Sing: Sundays, September 17th; 2-5pm We are co­sponsoring the Shanty Sing on the 3rd Sunday of every month. The William Main Doerflinger Memorial Sea Shanty Sessions at the Noble Maritime Collection (to give the official title) are from 2 to 5 pm at the Noble Gallery, Building D, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island. Refreshments are available, including beer and wine for sale. Snug Harbor is accessible by the S40 bus from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and by car. Gina Forsyth: Sunday, September 17st, 4:00pm Gina’s warm alto, Cajun and other traditional fiddle styles, and tasty work provide perfect settings for her well­ crafted and profound self­penned songs. Though her music cuts straight to the heart, Gina’s a tongue­in­cheek humorist too, and her shows are a grand mixture of smart, sassy, and soulful. For this house concert, Gina will cover songs from her solo albums, from “God Bless the Grass,” the recent release from her feminist vocal trio, The Malvinas, and some Cajun tunes and other traditional tunes and songs. Do you need more reasons to come out, and as the Cajuns say, “pass a good time?”. Iain Matthews & Jim Fogarty: Thursday, September 21st, 7:30pm Iain was a founding member of the British band, and appeared on the band's first three recordings. (Five of the original members recently got together at the Cropredy Festival in England.) Iain next formed his own band, Matthews Southern Comfort, and had a European hit with the song "Woodstock." Iain is a prolific songwriter, a superb singer, and an accomplished guitarist. Iain's website: http://www.iainmatthews.nl Jim started his career in Philadelphia working with a wide variety of Pop, , Rock, Country, and Folk groups. In 1987, Jim began seriously writing, touring worldwide, and recording in the popular folk duo, The SoulMates, with wife Lindsay Gilmour. In recent years, he has performed at festivals, nightclubs, folk venues, and on TV and radio across the US. The Irish Traditional Music Sessions continue along with the Sunnyside Singers club, the Folk Open Sing, and the Shanty Sing. In addition, there is the Park Slope Bluegrass and Old Time Jamboree, Gina Forsyth in a house concert and Iain Matthews &Jim Fogarty in concert at the O.S.A. Hall. It’s not too early to think about our Fall Folk Music weekend which is coming soon in October. Check out the flyer in this issue. CDSS Announces New Executive Director The Country Dance and Song Society of America (CDSS) announced the appointment of Kathryn Tarter German of Asheville, North Carolina, as their new Executive Director. A native of Berea, Kentucky, Katy grew up immersed in traditional song, dance, and music. She has served for 15 years as Assistant Director of Berea's Christmas Country Dance School; has been a staff member at family dance camps in Massachusetts, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Idaho; and was Program Director in 2017 for CDSS's Family Week at Pinewoods. She served as a member­at­large on the CDSS Governing Board from 2001­2007 and she rejoined the Board in 2016. As Director, Katy will reside primarily in Asheville, and will combine remote supervision with on­site work with our Massachusetts­based staff. Katy envisions new opportunities to connect CDSS's 300 affiliate groups in the United States and Canada, using technology to create a national conversation centered on traditional arts. [FMSNY is an affiliate group of CDSS ­ Ed.] Some Internet Stuff ●The late Alan Lomax left a huge archive of music. His Association for Cultural Equity is now headed by his daughter, the anthropologist Anna Lomax Wood. (Dr. Wood and her father both have participated in programs for the Folk Music Society of NY.) Finally Lomax's archive has been digitized and made available at http:// theglobaljukebox.org. The collection is described in two articles in The N.Y.
