THESIS THE HISTORY OF ŞÜREGEL(ŞİRAK) IN THE MIDDLE AGES Mehmet ÖZMENLİ Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Enver KONUKÇU 2007 – Pages: 232+XI Jury: Prof.Dr. Enver KONUKÇU Prof. Dr. Hamza GÜNDOĞDU Assoc.Prof.Dr. Mehmet TEZCAN Asist. Prof.Dr. Süleyman ÇİĞDEM Asist. Prof.Dr. Savaş EĞİLMEZ Şüregel/Şirak, our research filed, is significant since it is the Eastern gate of Anatolia. It is one of the first haunts of those who come from East. Fort his reason, a number of nations fought in order to dominate the area. In the struggles of different nations for this dominance, we witness that the natives had lived a process of choice. This process resulted in the dynastic feuds. As regards to its situation, the significance of the district increases. Consequently, it is also very important for Turkish history. In our study, the origins and influences of the nations, which settled or passed by, throughout the history of the middle ages will be analysed and the significance of the historical missions of the district will be taken into consideration. Bunlardan; P'awstos Buzand, Ghazar P'arpec'i', Kirakos Gandzaketsi, Sebeos, Aristakes Lastivertc'i, Yovhannes (John) Mamikonean, Vardan Araveltsi, Mateos, Gewond gibi yazarların eserlerinin hepsinden ve The Georgian Chronicle gibi Gürcü kaynağından azami ölçüde yararlanılmıştır.

  • Turkey: Background and U.S
Turkey: Background and U.S. Relations Updated August 31, 2018 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R41368 Turkey: Background and U.S. Relations Summary Turkey, a NATO ally since 1952, significantly affects a number of key U.S. national security issues in the Middle East and Europe. U.S.-Turkey relations have worsened throughout this decade over several matters, including Syria’s civil war, Turkey-Israel tensions, Turkey-Russia cooperation, and various Turkish domestic developments. The United States and NATO have military personnel and key equipment deployed to various sites in Turkey, including at Incirlik air base in the southern part of the country. Bilateral ties have reached historic lows in the summer of 2018. The major flashpoint has been a Turkish criminal case against American pastor Andrew Brunson. U.S. sanctions on Turkey related to the Brunson case and responses by Turkey and international markets appear to have seriously aggravated an already precipitous drop in the value of Turkey’s currency. Amid this backdrop, Congress has actively engaged on several issues involving Turkey, including the following: Turkey’s possible S-400 air defense system acquisition from Russia. Turkey’s efforts to acquire U.S.-origin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft and its companies’ role in the international F-35 consortium’s supply chain. Complex U.S.-Turkey interactions in Syria involving several state and non- state actors, including Russia and Iran. Over strong Turkish objections, the United States continues to partner with Syrian Kurds linked with Kurdish militants in Turkey, and Turkey’s military has occupied large portions of northern Syria to minimize Kurdish control and leverage.

  • Cilician Armenia in the Thirteenth Century.[3] Marco Polo, for Example, Set out on His Journey to China from Ayas in 1271
The Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia (also known as Little Armenia; not to be confused with the Arme- nian Kingdom of Antiquity) was a state formed in the Middle Ages by Armenian refugees fleeing the Seljuk invasion of Armenia. It was located on the Gulf of Alexandretta of the Mediterranean Sea in what is today southern Turkey. The kingdom remained independent from around 1078 to 1375. The Kingdom of Cilicia was founded by the Rubenian dynasty, an offshoot of the larger Bagratid family that at various times held the thrones of Armenia and Georgia. Their capital was Sis. Cilicia was a strong ally of the European Crusaders, and saw itself as a bastion of Christendom in the East. It also served as a focus for Armenian nationalism and culture, since Armenia was under foreign oc- cupation at the time. King Levon I of Armenia helped cultivate Cilicia's economy and commerce as its interaction with European traders grew. Major cities and castles of the kingdom included the port of Korikos, Lam- pron, Partzerpert, Vahka (modern Feke), Hromkla, Tarsus, Anazarbe, Til Hamdoun, Mamistra (modern Misis: the classical Mopsuestia), Adana and the port of Ayas (Aias) which served as a Western terminal to the East. The Pisans, Genoese and Venetians established colonies in Ayas through treaties with Cilician Armenia in the thirteenth century.[3] Marco Polo, for example, set out on his journey to China from Ayas in 1271. For a short time in the 1st century BCE the powerful kingdom of Armenia was able to conquer a vast region in the Levant, including the area of Cilicia.

  • Negotiating the Roman Past in Later Tenth-Century Armenia
Negotiating the Roman Past in Later Tenth-century Armenia Tim Greenwood* The Byzantine expansion eastwards into historic regions of Armenia in the second half of the tenth century and the Armenian responses to that expansion both receive modest coverage in Armenian historical narratives. Yet several works of Armenian historical literature were composed during this period which do not comment directly upon present circumstances but which, nevertheless, can be examined for what they reveal about the attitudes of their compilers. This study examines how historic Roman-Armenian encounters were represented in three such works. Despite their proximate dating, they attest a range of perspectives. The anonymous author of the History of Tarōn reimagined the conversion of Armenia at the start of the fourth century by Saint Gregory the Illuminator, highlighting the contribution of the metropolitan of Caesarea in the establishment of sees, monasteries and martyria across the region. A similar process was underway at the time following the Byzantine annexation of Tarōn and the attendant reconfiguration of the ecclesiological landscape. The History of Uxtanēs bishop of Sebasteia was completed between 980 and 989 CE by an Armenian ortho dox bishop and projects historic antagonism between Romans and Armenians. Uxtanēs sharpened the negative presentation of several Roman emperors from Antiquity by applying derogatory epithets usually reserved in Armenian literature for oppressive Persian Šahanšahs. At the same time, Armenian leaders were projected as compromising their auto- nomy. Uxtanēs also incorporated much-altered traditions about Saint Theodore Tiron and the Forty Martyrs of Sebasteia, implying that they were Armenian Christians persecuted for their faith.

In 2015 on 12 April Rome’s Pope Francis indued to Grigor Narekatsi with degree doctoral of universal church Introduction The end of the first and the beginning of the second millennia A.D. witnessed momentous changes in the Armenian homeland. They were great progressive changes, important developments to- wards national independence and social progress. It was a period of transition from Early Feudalism to Late Feudalism, and, as any transitional period, it was also an era of utmost aggravation of so- cial-political, social-economic conflicts, ideological clashes, recon- sideration of the foundations of dominant ideologies, reevaluation and reinterpretation of cultural values. And though the statehood was restored in Armenia, in parallel with the external threat, the problems of national independence, the establishment and sustention of a united and centralized state kept on being unsolved; continuous dis- cords between separate feudal formations decomposed and tor- tured the country and prevented the achievement of a national unity. On the one hand, feudal relations strengthened, underwent auto- matic development and were improved (bondage of a great number of peasants in the result of the intensification of feudal exploitation, pressure apparatuses structure strengthening of secular and reli- gious authorities, economic and military reinforcement, the great center-cities of feudal formations flourished(crafts and trades were developed), on the other hand, the resistance of the exploited stiff- ened too; class struggle escalated.
