Readers of this article have the copyright owner’s permission to reproduce it for educational, not-for-profit purposes, if the author and publisher are acknowledged in the copy. Story and Vision: Exploring the Use of Stories for Growth in the Life of Faith Michael Valenzuela, FSC2 Chapter One Statement of the Problem The use of story in communicating religious understanding and tradition is as old as religion itself. Human beings have always resorted to the language of story (image, symbol, metaphor, narrative) to speak of their encounters with Mystery. Telling stories is so much a part of what we do as human beings that we often take it for granted. Thus, the turn to story in religious education is nothing new, rather, it stems from a growing recognition and appreciation of the centrality of narratives to growth in personal and communal faith. How can different forms of stories be used to facilitate the growth in the life of faith among Catholic elementary and high school students in the Philippines? This is the question this extended essay seeks to address. Scope and Limitations “Story” is one of those deceptively simple words that everyone seems to use and hardly anyone can adequately define. A helpful definition offered by the Christian ethicist Stanley Hauerwas describes story as “a narrative account that binds events and agents together in an intelligible pattern.”3 While strictly speaking, one can differentiate between story and narrative, for the purposes of this extended essay, I will treat these two terms as meaning essentially the same thing.

  • Visual Theologies in Graham Greene's 'Dark and Magical Heart
Visual Theologies in Graham Greene’s ‘Dark and Magical Heart of Faith’ by Dorcas Wangui MA (Lancaster) BA (Lancaster) Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2017 Wangui 1 Abstract Visual Theologies in Graham Greene’s ‘Dark and Magical Heart of Faith’ This study explores the ways in which Catholic images, statues, and icons haunt the fictional, spiritual wasteland of Greene’s writing, nicknamed ‘Greeneland’. It is also prompted by a real space, discovered by Greene during his 1938 trip to Mexico, which was subsequently fictionalised in The Power and the Glory (1940), and which he described as ‘a short cut to the dark and magical heart of faith’. This is a space in which modern notions of disenchantment meets a primal need for magic – or the miraculous – and where the presentation of concepts like ‘salvation’ are defamiliarised as savage processes that test humanity. This brutal nature of faith is reflected in the pagan aesthetics of Greeneland which focus on the macabre and heretical images of Christianity and how for Greene, these images magically transform the darkness of doubt into desperate redemption. As an amateur spy, playwright and screen writer Greene’s visual imagination was a strength to his work and this study will focus on how the visuality of Greene’s faith remains in dialogue with debates concerning the ‘liquidation of religion’ in society, as presented by Graham Ward. The thesis places Greene’s work in dialogue with other Catholic novelists and filmmakers, particularly in relation to their own visual-religious aesthetics, such as Martin Scorsese and David Lodge.

religions Article Dalit Theology and Indian Christian History in Dialogue: Constructive and Practical Possibilities Andrew Ronnevik Department of Religion, Baylor University, Waco, TX 76706, USA; [email protected] Abstract: In this article, I consider how an integration of Dalit theology and Indian Christian history could help Dalit theologians in their efforts to connect more deeply with the lived realities of today’s Dalit Christians. Drawing from the foundational work of such scholars as James Massey and John C. B. Webster, I argue for and begin a deeper and more comprehensive Dalit reading and theological analysis of the history of Christianity and mission in India. My explorations—touching on India’s Thomas/Syrian, Catholic, Protestant, and Pentecostal traditions—reveal the persistence and complexity of caste oppression throughout Christian history in India, and they simultaneously draw attention to over-looked, empowering, and liberative resources that are bound to Dalit Christians lives, both past and present. More broadly, I suggest that historians and theologians in a variety of contexts—not just in India—can benefit from blurring the lines between their disciplines. Keywords: Dalit theology; history of Indian Christianity; caste; liberation 1. Written with an emphasis on clarity and concision, all entries are designed to help the reader understand and assess the specifically theological significance of the most important concepts. Clearly structured, the volume is organized around a small number of ‘core entries’ which focus on key topics to provide a general overview of major subject areas, while making use of related shorter entries to impart a more detailed knowledge of technical terms. • 3-Step Plan Article #9 Conduct of the Service by ACP" (45 Pages)
File Name: "3-Step Plan Article #9 Conduct of the Service by ACP" (45 pages) THE CONDUCT OF THE SERVICE According to the Rubrics of The Lutheran Hymnal, The Lutheran Liturgy, The Lutheran Lectionary, and The Music for the Liturgy1 By Arthur Carl Piepkorn (1907-1973☩) Concordia Seminary Print Shop, 1965. 44 pages. Edited by Philip James Secker. Revised 3/17/19. 40 pages. Editor's Note: Arthur Carl Piepkorn's classic monograph The Conduct of the Service is primarily about the rubrics of the Service, but contains a great deal of information about what is in Piepkorn's 1962 classic monograph The Architectural Requirements of the Lutheran Cultus (which is in 3-Step Plan Article #7 The Full 3-step Plan). "Cultus" is a Latin loan word that refers to adiaphora, that is, things that are neither commanded nor forbidden by God such as architecture, altars, banners, baptismal fonts, candles, holy communion vessels and rails, hymnals, musical instruments, offering plates, pews, unleavened holy communion wafers, vestments, etc. So both monographs should be used together. The following book is now available as a computer searchable CD that can be searched for additional information on what is in those two monographs: The Sacred Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions, edited and introduced by Philip J. Secker, Foreword by Robert Kolb, Volume 2 in The Selected Writings of Arthur Carl Piepkorn, CEC Press, 2007, 313 pages. This edition of The Conduct of the Service is Copyright©2018 Philip James Secker but may be reproduced as long as it is reproduced in its entirety.
