5 OUR COMMUNITY SCHOOL ZONE ETIQUETTE ugust 25th was the fi rst day of school and I had the pleasure of observing the view of Adifferent situations through the eyes of a school crossing guard. I noticed many violations which, if alleviated, would help improve the safety of the children trying to get to school, and help everyone get to work and carry on with their day more effi ciently. Being a crossing guard is not easy. This month I’d like to highlight a few things which would help make of a Crossing Guard just a little less stressful. Keep in mind these are Texas laws and should be utilized when operating a motor vehicle. • Obey the posted 20 mph school zone, even if the lights are not fl ashing. It is your responsibility to know the times when the school zones are in effect. • Cell phone use is prohibited within the school zone. • Always yield to pedestrians within the cross walk. • Stop at the designated point. (DO NOT block the crosswalk) • Utilize your turn signals prior to the intersection. (This is extremely helpful)

8 OUR COMMUNITY SOLID STATE VS SPINNING HARD DRIVES olid State Drives or SSD’s hold your fi les like older traditional hard drives, Sbut they typically have a smaller capacity. Many computers today have 1TB (terabyte) or even 2TB hard drives. These are traditional spinning drives with lots of moving parts. Solid State Drives are much faster than spinning drives because they do not have to fi nd your data on a disk, but most at the consumer level are only 128GB to 500GB. Unless you have a computer custom built for you (we do that), you will likely have to pay a substantial price difference to get a new computer with an SSD. In a Macbook Pro it can be a $400+ differential for example though the SSD drive really costs much less than that. There has been a substantial drop in SSD prices over the last couple years and as the technology becomes more widely used the prices will drop further. Now that they are becoming more affordable it is actually very reasonable to upgrade your existing computer to an SSD. An SSD upgrade will make more difference than adding memory typically. Files will copy and save faster and your system will boot signifi cantly faster. If an SSD is not large enough to hold your giant movie collection, you can put the operating system and other fi les on the SSD and keep your old spinning drive for secondary storage. You can even move your existing Windows installation as-as to a new SSD so you do not have to reinstall all your programs and games. Contributed by Charles Swihart, Sugar Land PC; [email protected]

THE FORT BEND SYMPHONY CATCHES THE HALLOWEEN SPIRIT WITH FAN FAVORITE HAUNTCERT OCTOBER 26 he Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra brings out their inner goblins and ghouls for the fi rst concert of the 2014-15 season T on Sunday, October 26, in the Stafford Centre at 2pm. Hauntcert is an area favorite, and a Halloween tradition for many families. When the lights go down, there’s magic in the hall, as costumed characters take over the orchestra seats. Musical selections include the eerily traditional Mussorgsky favorite, Night on Bald Mountain, and Liadov’s ode to the spooky Russian folk character Baba Yaga. The Beach Boys’ medley of California surfer songs provides a familiar, calming lull before we return to the spooky sounds. Henry Mancini’s classic movie scores, Pink Panther and Monster Movie Music Suite bring back memories of familiar themes from Saturday matinees. Caped crusaders of all ages thrill to John Williams’ Superman March. The evening begins with Video Games Live, featuring selections from the concert sensation of the same name. Gamers and non-gamers alike will recognize these iconic theme tunes. Hauntcert is the fi rst performance for Dominique Røyem as the FBSO’s new music director. She states, “I am thrilled that the Hauntcert is my inaugural concert with FBSO because Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! There is no better way to start a season than with a costumed bash full of spooky music!” There are holiday-themed surprises throughout the concert, including a costume contest at intermission, with prizes awarded in youth and adult categories. Little ones are invited to meet the musicians (and perhaps do a little trick-or-treating at the same time!). It’s a creative and family-friendly way to spend a Sunday afternoon just before Halloween. Tickets to Hauntcert begin at $12 for adults. There’s no charge for children 12 and under when they’re accompanied by an adult. Discounts are available for students, seniors 55 and over, military personnel, and groups of 10 or more. Tickets are available online at www.fbso. org or by calling 281.276.9642. Season ticket packages are still available.
