Annual Report 2017
fa What is CAPI? Corruption costs taxpayers trillions of dollars a year worldwide that could be better spent on social, health, education, and other programs to improve the lives of citizens worldwide. Despite the pervasiveness of corruption, finding, stopping and preventing it is daunting. There are anti-corruption offices in place across the country and globe, but the system overall is relatively young and largely decentralized. Individual corruption-fighting offices are often disparate and adrift, unconnected to peers and experts in other jurisdictions. These offices face common challenges and can benefit greatly from active collaboration and shared best practices. In 2013, the New York City Department of Investigation partnered with Columbia Law School to create the Center for the Advancement of Public Integrity (CAPI). Over the past nearly five years, CAPI has grown into a platform through which public integrity professionals can connect with each other and provides the resources to help them succeed. Executive Director Jennifer Rodgers CAPI is a nonprofit resource center dedicated to bolstering anti-corruption research, promoting key tools and best practices, and cultivating a professional network to share new developments and lessons learned, both online and through live events. Unique in its municipal focus, CAPI’s work emphasizes practical lessons and practitioner needs. Through this network, in which anti-corruption practitioners and agencies can share their insights, methods, and successes, CAPI seeks to support the fight against corruption in all its forms. We strive to create an environment where members of our community learn from one another to better promote public integrity and good governance. -

Chris Liddell
CHRIS LIDDELL “We tend to overestimate the short term impact of trends and underestimate the long term impact. In the long term it is clear that environmental issues will be a significant threat to both global growth and human wellbeing. They will also however be an opportunity for some countries to take, and benefit from, a leadership position. New Zealand could be, and should be, one of those countries.” Chris was recently Vice Chairman and CFO of General Motors. Previously he was CFO of Microsoft, CFO of International Paper and CEO of Carter Holt Harvey. He was also the former Chairman of Project Crimson, a Director of the New Zealand Rugby Union and a trustee of the New Zealand Sports Foundation. He is currently involved in a number of philanthropic projects in New Zealand, is a Trustee of the New Zealand Institute, a Patron of the University of Auckland fundraising campaign and a Director of IMG, the leading sports management company in the world. GEOFF ROSS “I am involved in Pure Advantage, because I believe it is what will give this country a competitive advantage. As the world looks for greener - food, beverage, tourism, energy, technology, fashion, etc, business opportunities will emerge. With a Pure Advantage and some haste, we can grab these opportunities. Creating wealth for all New Zealanders.” Geoff was the founder and CEO of 42 Below Limited which was a listed company for three years prior to its sale to Bacardi in late 2006. Analysing Journalists Written English on Twitter
Analysing Journalists Written English on Twitter A comparative study of language used in news coverage on Twitter and conventional news sites Douglas Askman Department of English Bachelor Degree Project English Linguistics Autumn 2020 Supervisor: Kate O’Farrell Analysing Journalists Written English on Twitter A comparative study of language used in news coverage on Twitter with conventional news sites. Douglas Askman Abstract The English language is in constant transition, it always has been and always will be. Historically the change has been caused by colonisation and migration. Today, however, the change is initiated by a much more powerful instrument: the Internet. The Internet revolution comes with superior changes to the English language and how people communicate. Computer Mediated Communication is arguably one of the main spaces for communication between people today, supported by the increasing amount and usage of social media platforms. Twitter is one of the largest social media platforms in the world today with a diverse set of users. The amount of journalists on Twitter have increased in the last few years, and today they make up 25 % of all verified accounts on the platform. Journalists use Twitter as a tool for marketing, research, and spreading of news. The aim of this study is to investigate whether there are linguistic differences between journalists’ writing on Twitter to their respective conventional news site. This is done through a Discourse Analysis, where types of informal language features are specifically accounted for. Conclusively the findings show signs of language differentiation between the two studied medias, with informality on twitter being a substantial part of the findings. -
The Cybersecurity Policy Adjustment of the Trump Administration
The Cybersecurity Policy Adjustment of the Trump Administration Zhang Tengjun ybersecurity emerged as a popular issue during the 2016 presidential election of the United States with the successive email leak of the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and the CDemocratic National Committee.1 Donald Trump, then the presidential nominee of the Republican Party, vowed to make cybersecurity an “immediate and top priority for my administration” if elected.2 Since taking office, Trump has made some adjustments to the existing US cybersecurity policy under domestic pressures from various sides. The characteristics of these policy changes and the underlying dynamics are worth our observation and analysis. Major Features of Trump’s Cybersecurity Policy Adjustment While the cybersecurity policy adjustment of the Trump administration experienced a dynamic process, it can be generalized that the concept of “America First” has been reflected both in the reinforcement of homeland cyber offensive and defensive capabilities and in the declining enthusiasm Zhang Tengjun is Assistant Research Fellow at the Department for American Studies, China Institute of International Studies (CIIS). 1 For relevant research, see Lu Chuanying, “International Cybersecurity Governance from the International Politics Perspective: a Case Study of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election,” Global Review, No.4, 2017, pp.33-48; David P. Experts Say Conway May Have Broken Ethics Rule by Touting Ivanka Trump'
From: Tyler Countie To: Contact OGE Subject: Violation of Government Ethics Question Date: Wednesday, February 08, 2017 11:26:19 AM Hello, I was wondering if the following tweet would constitute a violation of US Government ethics: https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/829356871848951809 How can the President of the United States put pressure on a company for no longer selling his daughter's things? In text it says: Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom. She is a great person -- always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible! 10:51am · 8 Feb 2017 · Twitter for iPhone Have a good day, Tyler From: Russell R. To: Contact OGE Subject: Trump"s message to Nordstrom Date: Wednesday, February 08, 2017 1:03:26 PM What exactly does your office do if it's not investigating ethics issues? Did you even see Trump's Tweet about Nordstrom (in regards to his DAUGHTER'S clothing line)? Not to be rude, but the president seems to have more conflicts of interest than someone who has a lot of conflicts of interests. Yeah, our GREAT leader worrying about his daughters CLOTHING LINE being dropped, while people are dying from other issues not being addressed all over the country. Maybe she should go into politics so she can complain for herself since government officials can do that. How about at least doing your jobs, instead of not?!?!? Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess it's just easier to do nothing, huh? Sincerely, Russell R.
