The survey was conducted between January and June 2016. The objective of the study was to explore the differential morbidities among mineworkers and non- mineworkers and the association of the morbidity with various socio-demographic factors. Chi-square test, and binary logistic regression were used for data analysis. The results indicate that the prevalence of digestive problems, skin diseases, cancerous diseases, and urinary dysfunction was significantly higher among the Uranium mine-workers than the non-mineworkers. The main workers living within a range of 2 km from the tailing pond being more likely to suffer digestive problems (OR=1.57; 95% CI, 0.94–2.60) and respiratory illnesses (OR=1.89; 95% CI, 1.06–3.37) than those living further away. The findings have important program and policy implications related to safety measures, nuclear regulation acts, and resettlement of tribal victims. At the exploration stage, the country's laws related to statutory environmental clearance covering forest and sanctuaries or Coastal Regulatory Zones (CRZ) are: equally applicable for atomic minerals. At the developmental mining or commercial exploitation stage in addition to the environmental impact assessment, the provisions of Atomic Energy (working of Mines, Minerals and handling of Prescribed Substances) Rules 1984 are also to be followed which covers radiation monitoring, pollution control and other safety measures which are enforced by licensing authorities and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) of India. In India, Jaduguda, Bhatin, Narwapahar in Singhbhum Thrust Belt (STB), Asthota and Khiya in Siwaliks, Domiasiat in Cretaceous sandstones, Bodal and Jajawal in Precambrian crystallines, are some of the centres, where mining has been carried out up to various underground levels. Substantial amount of dust and radon gas are generated during mining and milling operations. Though uranium mining is considered as hazardous for contamination by radionuclides, it is observed that many non-uranium mines have registered up to 100 mWL radon concentration, e.g. copper mines in STB area show up to 900 mewl in a few cases. Compared to this the Uranium mines in India have not shown any increase over the limits prescribed by AERB.

JHA *** Abstract The uranium ore mining facility, in addition to the desirable product, produces wastes in the form of environmental releases or effluents to air, water and soil. The toxicological and other (non-radiological) effects are generally addressed in EIA / EMP studies as per MOEF guidelines. Since the uranium ore is radioactive, it is desirable to conduct a study on radiological effects considering the impacts of radiological releases to the environment. Before undertaking the commercial mining operations at Bagjata uranium deposit in the Singhbhum east district of Jharkhand, pre-operational radiological base line data were generated and a separate study on radiological impact on various environmental matrices was conducted inline with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s laid out guidelines. The paper describes the philosophy of such studies and the findings that helped in formulating a separate environmental management plan. INTRODUCTION: Uranium is widely distributed in the earth’s crust with an average abundance of two parts per million (ppm). Rocks containing uranium bearing minerals with average grades of about 1000 ppm are usually mined by conventional open pit or underground methods depending on the geological condition of the ore, such as deposit size, ore grade, depth and ground condition. The underground operation produces less waste rock than open pit mining. In some cases like Australia and USA where average grades of uranium are between 100 to 1000 parts per million, uranium is recovered as a by-product of other mineral commodities.

For most of the post-war period, India badly trailed the established nuclear powers in weapon quality, quantity, and the sophistication of delivery systems. In recent years, however, India has indicated a willingness to take the steps necessary to becoming a first rate nuclear power[1]. History The Indian nuclear program evolved before the partition of United Hindustan. In 1944, Dr. Homi Jahangir Bhaba submitted proposal to Sir Durab Tata Trust in order to build the Nuclear Research Institute (NRI)[2]. Sir Durab was the uncle of Dr. Bhaba and well known wealthy businessman of India. Soon the NRI established in Bangalore on the fund of Tata Trust, after its completion in 1945. The name was also given to it on Tata Trust i.e., Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR)[3]. Dr. Bhaba became the first Director of TIFR[4]. In the end of 1945 Bhaba shifted the TIFR in Bombay, where it is still working on nuclear research since its inception[5]. On August 15, 1947, India got independence from British rule and year later it passed the country Atomic Energy Act and crafted the Indian Atomic Energy Commission (AEC)[6]. The essential purpose of AEC was carried out the in-depth studies of nuclear research and encompassed three associates, Dr. Bhabha, Dr. Krishnan and Dr. S.S. Bhatnagar[7].
