THE SPIRIT OF WORSHIP

TYLER MILLER 5.11.2014

I. THE WORSHIP GOD IS SEEKING

John 4:23-24 “the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Ephesians 5:18-20 “Do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in and and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father …”

II. QUENCHING THE SPIRIT OF WORSHIP

A. The Spirit of God is grieved in our midst when we step into a critical, religious spirit that seeks to be entertained more than it seeks to encounter God. The Holy spirit wants to liberate our hearts and yet is grieved and quenched by our attitudes about worship.

B. This is evidenced by the fact that we can stay fully focused and engaged for yours a day watching our favorite TV shows or on FaceBook, but complain that worship is too long if we sing for 45 minutes corporately one day a week.

C. There are many times that the Spirit of God is breathing and blowing through our midst in subtle and yet powerful ways and we cannot even sense that a breeze is blowing. One of the ways that you express love to God is with your strength [Matt. 22:37]. Not merely with your heart or with all your mind. But love God with all your strength. With your whole being. All of your energy!

Psalm 145:3 “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one an fathom.”

III. TEN MINIFESTATIONS OF THE SPIRIT IN WORSHIP

1. Lifting up our hands in reverence.

Lamentations 3:41 “Let us lift our hearts and hands to God in heaven.”

Psalm 63:4 “Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.”

Psalm 134:2 “Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, And bless the LORD.”

4. Praising Him with the Dance.

6. Singing Loudly with Praises.

7. Singing New Songs and Spontaneous Prophetic Choruses.

Psalm 96:1,2 “Oh sing to the LORD a new song! Sing to the LORD, all the earth, Sing to the LORD, bless His name; Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.”

Psalm 98:1 “Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.”

Psalm 149:1 “Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, And His praise in the assembly of saints.”

Isaiah 42:10-13 “Sing to the LORD a new song, And His praise form the ends of the earth, You who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, You coastlands and you inhabitants of them! 11 Let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voice, The villages that Kedar inhabits. Let the inhabitants of Sela sing, Let them shout from the top of mountains… 13 The LORD shall go forth like a mighty man; He shall stir up His zeal like a man of war. He shall cry out, yes, shout aloud; He shall prevail against His enemies.”

Revelation 5:9 “They sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,”

8. The Repetition of Anointed Choruses.

Psalm 136:1-4 (Repeated 26 times in this song) “Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. 2 Oh, give thanks to the God of gods! For His mercy endures forever. 3 Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords! For His mercy endures forever; 4 To Him who alone does great wonder, for His mercy endures forever;”

Isaiah 6:2-3 “Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings; with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 and one cried to another and said; “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The who earth is full of His glory!”

Revelation 4:8 [Over 800 years after Isaiah’s prophecy] “The four living creatures, each having six wings, werer full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

9. Singing in the Holy Spirit and Spontaneous Singing in Tongues.

1 Corinthinas 14:15 “What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit (pray in tongues, your spiritual language vv.14), and I will also pray with the understanding (pray in your human language.) I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.”

10. Flowing Prophetically with Musical Instruments

1 Samuel 16:23 “So it was, whenever the spirit… was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.”

2 Kings 3:14 “Elisha [in order to prophecy] said… “Now bring me a musician.” Then it happened, when the musician played, that the hand of the LORD [the Holy Spirit] came upon him. 16 And he said, “Thus says the LORD…”

IV. REVIVAL OF WORSHIP

A. The Holy Spirit is going to change the understanding and expression of worship in our generation by raising up an army of pure and humble, spirit-filled worshipers. In every place Jesus’ name will be exalted through extravagant expressions of worship among His people.

Malachi 1:11 “For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense [fiery prayer] shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering [pure worship]; For My name shall be great among the nations,” Says the LORD of hosts.”

B. God is going to prepare the nations for Jesus’ return and fill the earth with His glory by fillint it with true worship [Habakkuk 2:14; John 4:23; Psalm 86:9].

Psalm 22:27,28 “All the ends of the world Shall remember and turn to the LORD, And all the families of the nations Shall worship before You. 28 for the kingdom is the LORD’S, And He rules over the nations.”

Psalm 66:4 “All the earth shall worship You And sing praises to You; they shall sing praises to Your name.”

Psalm 86:9,10 “All nations who You have made Shall come and worship before You, O Lord, And shall glorify Your name. 10 For You are great, and… You alone are God.”
