The course generally focuses on painting and the development of printmaking. Course objectives: 1. develop written communication skills and critical thinking skills; 2. research aspects important to the art of Dallas-area painter Vera Barnett; 3. produce a narrative about selected works by Barnett that will be exhibited at SFA’s Griffith Gallery (March 30 – May 6) and Cole Art Center’s Reception Gallery (March 30 – June 11). The narratives will promote viewers’ understanding of the art works and enhance their understanding of the artist; 1) recognize major Northern Renaissance artists and their works; 2) comprehend the character of Northern art as a whole as distinct from Italian art; 3) analyze religious, mythological and allegorical iconography. Program Learning Outcomes for art history majors: The mission of the BA in Art History program is to initiate a life-long involvement with the visual arts, both through classroom and extramural activities. The BA program provides sound preparation for graduate work in art history, museum studies, cultural studies, or gender studies. Undergraduate students completing the BA Program in Art History will be able to: a) use the historical framework and terminology of Western art; b) employ methods of analysis and interpretation of works of art; c) conduct art historical research involving logical and insightful analysis of secondary literature. Student Learning Outcomes for art history majors; Students in each upper level BA art history course will complete written work that will be evaluated according to a rubric 1) Foundation Skills. Undergraduate students will define and state a basic knowledge of major and characteristic works of art and architecture in the Western Tradition, including the art of minorities and women. 2) Interpretative Skills. Undergraduate students will employ various interpretive methodologies to analyze works of art. 3) Research Skills. (Visits on the bus or van trips do not count.) Verify your visit by submitting a photo of yourself at the museum(s), brochure with admission sticker, receipt or signature by museum presonnel by the day the second exam is due. Brochure alone is not acceptable. Check with me before you visit a museum that I might not be familiar with. 1% is the maximum extra credit offered. No other extra credit is offered. Communication: I will post announcements on D2L News. Please contact me by sfasu email address or telephone rather than D2L email. I don’t have a cellphone to use JackText. Attendance Policy: A roll sheet will be distributed every class. Be sure to sign it. “I forgot to sign the roll” is an unacceptable excuse, and you will be counted absent. Absences will be posted on D2L Grades. 6 absences, both excused and unexcused, are the maximum allowed. You will receive no credit / an F if you are absent for any reason 7 or more class periods. 6 absences is three weeks of the semester, which is the maximum the University allows. “Save” absences for when you need them. Arriving more than 30 minutes late or leaving early will count as an absence unless you provide a legitimate reason for arriving late or leaving early. Still, it benefits you to come late rather than miss the entire class. Missed In-Class Work Policy: Makeup work will be given only for a documented reason such as a severe illness or injury, emergency or required-university travel. Evaluation of the validity of an excuse rests with me. Notify me beforehand if possible. If not, you must notify me within twenty-four hours after the class where we did the work why you missed it (by e-mail, phone or note). Otherwise you not be allowed to make it up. If you don’t notify me within 24 hours, talk to me anyway. One makeup piece of work per term is the maximum allowed. Tips for Success: --Learn to take good notes. Some material is not in the textbook. I sometimes disagree with the textbook. Find the note taking style that works for you. Seek help at the Academic Assistance Resource Center (AARC) in Steen Library if you don’t know how to take notes. --Rewrite notes after every class while the material is fresh in your mind. --Study your notes and read the book outside class. --Check out D2L for the class presentations that include much useful information. --Get to know classmates to work together. Courtesy: --Arrive on time and stay the entire class. However, come late rather than not at all. --Kindly turn off cell / smartphones, laptops, netbooks, iPads and all other digital devices during class. Ask for my permission if you wish to take notes on a device. --Avoid private conversations in class, which are distracting to your classmates. --Eat and drink elsewhere. Water bottles are fine. --Respect ideas presented in class, particularly statements about religion presented as history. I care and want you to succeed. You are welcome to share interests, difficulties, etc. Emergency Exit: In case of emergency, take a left from the main door of the classroom and proceed down the empty hall to the double doors. There are at least five other exits main entrance; hall where my office is, near the photography studio; graduate hallway, and, in emergencies, the art metal/jewelry studio. 4 Academic Integrity: (A-9.1) Academic integrity is a responsibility of all university faculty and students. Faculty members promote academic integrity in multiple ways including instruction on the components of academic honesty, as well as abiding by university policy on penalties for cheating and plagiarism. Definition of Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty includes both cheating and plagiarism. Cheating includes but is not limited to (1) using or attempting to use unauthorized materials to aid in achieving a better grade on a component of a class; (2) the falsification or invention of any information, including citations, on an assigned exercise; and/or (3) helping or attempting to help another in an act of cheating or plagiarism.

Who, or what, is the I? And what is it that it is striving to do? A clue in the words at the bottom: “Jan van Eyck made me Year 1433 21 October.” So is it the painting that speaks? Or perhaps the Man in the Red Turban whose penetrating stare holds us? What does it mean for a painting to speak, to be present? What does it mean for a face, a person, an identity to be present through painting? This course seeks to understand painting’s ability to evoke presence in the late Middle Ages. How does it do so? Whose presence? What are the differences between divine and human presence? These questions are pressing in this period of theological controversy (the rise of Protestantism and the defense of Catholicism), artistic innovation (the emergence of portraiture and oil painting), and scientific discovery (the adaptation of perspective and the camera obscura). We will consider the roles that materiality, perspective, ritual, devotion, salvation, originality, verisimilitude and beauty played in this chapter of the history of the image – a chapter that our modern desires for authenticity in art indicate is still being written. Together, we will explore and analyze the theory of the image in its haunting and lasting ability to make the absent present, the invisible visible, and the abstract available.

    SEBASTIANO DEL PIOMBO AND HIS COLLABORATION WITH MICHELANGELO: DISTANCE AND PROXIMITY TO THE DIVINE IN CATHOLIC REFORMATION ROME by Marsha Libina A dissertation submitted to the Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland April, 2015 © 2015 Marsha Libina All Rights Reserved Abstract This dissertation is structured around seven paintings that mark decisive moments in Sebastiano del Piombo’s Roman career (1511-47) and his collaboration with Michelangelo. Scholarship on Sebastiano’s collaborative works with Michelangelo typically concentrates on the artists’ division of labor and explains the works as a reconciliation of Venetian colorito (coloring) and Tuscan disegno (design). Consequently, discourses of interregional rivalry, center and periphery, and the normativity of the Roman High Renaissance become the overriding terms in which Sebastiano’s work is discussed. What has been overlooked is Sebastiano’s own visual intelligence, his active rather than passive use of Michelangelo’s skills, and the novelty of his works, made in response to reform currents of the early sixteenth century. This study investigates the significance behind Sebastiano’s repeating, slowing down, and narrowing in on the figure of Christ in his Roman works. The dissertation begins by addressing Sebastiano’s use of Michelangelo’s drawings as catalysts for his own inventions, demonstrating his investment in collaboration and strategies of citation as tools for artistic image-making. Focusing on Sebastiano’s reinvention of his partner’s drawings, it then looks at the ways in which the artist engaged with the central debates of the Catholic Reformation – debates on the Church’s mediation of the divine, the role of the individual in the path to personal salvation, and the increasingly problematic distance between the layperson and God.

    Abstraction and Concretization Of the Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil As Seen Through Biblical Interpretation and Art Alyssa Ovadis Department of Jewish Studies Faculty of Arts McGill University, Montreal April 2010 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts © Alyssa Ovadis 2010 iii ABSTRACT This work examines the patterns inherent to the understanding of the nature of the forbidden fruit in an attempt to demonstrate parallels between the reasoning of biblical interpreters, on one hand, and of artists, on the other. While the biblical text, in Gen. 2:16-17, offers an abstract portrayal by vaguely employing the word “fruit,” visual representations inevitably present a more concrete and less generic image by illustrating a specific fruit. My research presents this phenomenon of abstraction and concretization through five chapters that exhibit the juxtaposition of the biblical text to its illustration: first, the representation of the Garden of Eden; second, the portrayal of the two trees, the Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life; third, the presence of the Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge in those visual depictions; fourth, its absence; and fifth, typological references to the Forbidden Fruit within New Testament scenes.     Picturing Mary: Woman, Mother, Idea Educator’s Resource Packet Dear Educators, We are delighted to present this educator’s resource packet, which was created in conjunction with the special exhibition Picturing Mary: Woman, Mother, Idea, on view at National Museum of Women in the Arts from December 5, 2014, through April 12, 2015. Picturing Mary primarily explores the visual language developed in Renaissance and Baroque Italy to represent the Virgin Mary and her child. While the works in this exhibition were intended for religious use, at their core they provide insight into the universal and timeless concepts of unconditional love, grief, and hope. The works included in this resource are but a fragment of a centuries-old and continuing tradition of expressing these concepts visually. This packet contains information about the 60+ objects included in the Picturing Mary exhibition; inquiry-based strategies for incorporating these objects and their themes into your classroom through discussion; a glossary of materials and techniques; and step-by-step instructions for a related bookmaking activity. To infuse a world perspective into this resource, we have incorporated objects from NMWA’s online exhibition A Global Icon: Mary in Context. Essential questions are provided to help compare and contrast the works in Picturing Mary with those in the online exhibition.
