************************************************************ ARTH310: Painting and Presence Theory of the Image, 1350-1550 12:40-2:10 TR [email protected] office hours: MWF noon-3 p.m. TR 8-10 a.m. and by appointment ************************************************************ The Goal: “Als Ich Kan” (As I Can: the best that I can) reads the top of the painting’s frame. Who, or what, is the I? And what is it that it is striving to do? A clue in the words at the bottom: “Jan van Eyck made me Year 1433 21 October.” So is it the painting that speaks? Or perhaps the Man in the Red Turban whose penetrating stare holds us? What does it mean for a painting to speak, to be present? What does it mean for a face, a person, an identity to be present through painting? This course seeks to understand painting’s ability to evoke presence in the late Middle Ages. How does it do so? Whose presence? What are the differences between divine and human presence? These questions are pressing in this period of theological controversy (the rise of Protestantism and the defense of Catholicism), artistic innovation (the emergence of portraiture and oil painting), and scientific discovery (the adaptation of perspective and the camera obscura). We will consider the roles that materiality, perspective, ritual, devotion, salvation, originality, verisimilitude and beauty played in this chapter of the history of the image – a chapter that our modern desires for authenticity in art indicate is still being written. Together, we will explore and analyze the theory of the image in its haunting and lasting ability to make the absent present, the invisible visible, and the abstract available. -

Angel 2017 PhD Abstract A Moral Persuasion: The Nazi-Looted Art Recoveries of the Max Stern Art Restitution Project, 2002-2013 Sara J. Angel Department of Art University of Toronto Year of convocation: 2017 In 1937, under Gestapo orders, the Nazis forced the Düsseldorf-born Jewish art dealer Max Stern to sell over 200 of his family’s paintings at Lempertz, a Cologne-based auction house. Stern kept this fact a secret for the rest of his life despite escaping from Europe to Montreal, Canada, where he settled and became one of the country’s leading art dealers by the mid-twentieth century. A decade after Stern’s death in 1987, his heirs (McGill University, Concordia University, and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) discovered the details of what he had lost, and how in the post-war years Stern travelled to Germany in an attempt to reclaim his art. To honour the memory of Max Stern, they founded the Montreal- based Max Stern Art Restitution Project in 2002, dedicated to regaining ownership of his art and to the study of Holocaust-era plunder and recovery. This dissertation presents the histories and circumstances of the first twelve paintings claimed by the organization in the context of the broader history of Nazi-looted art between 1933-2012. Organized into thematic chapters, the dissertation documents how, by following a carefully devised approach of moral persuasion that combines practices like publicity, provenance studies, law enforcement, and legal precedents, the Max Stern Art Restitution Project set international precedents in the return of cultural property. -

The course generally focuses on painting and the development of printmaking. Course objectives: 1. develop written communication skills and critical thinking skills; 2. research aspects important to the art of Dallas-area painter Vera Barnett; 3. produce a narrative about selected works by Barnett that will be exhibited at SFA’s Griffith Gallery (March 30 – May 6) and Cole Art Center’s Reception Gallery (March 30 – June 11). The narratives will promote viewers’ understanding of the art works and enhance their understanding of the artist; 1) recognize major Northern Renaissance artists and their works; 2) comprehend the character of Northern art as a whole as distinct from Italian art; 3) analyze religious, mythological and allegorical iconography. Program Learning Outcomes for art history majors: The mission of the BA in Art History program is to initiate a life-long involvement with the visual arts, both through classroom and extramural activities. The BA program provides sound preparation for graduate work in art history, museum studies, cultural studies, or gender studies. ISSN: 1949-9833 JHNA 6:2 (Summer 2014) 1 THE TURIN-MILAN HOURS: REVISED DATING AND ATTRIBUTION Carol Herselle Krinsky Identifying Jan van Eyck as Hand G of the Turin-Milan Hours depends substantially on the identification of Duke John of Bavaria as sometime owner of the manuscript. Although the Turin-Milan Hours contains the arms of Hainaut, Holland, and Bavaria, the duke had legal claim only to parts of Holland. Neither the Estates of Hainaut nor Countess Jacqueline of Bavaria, heiress of John’s brother, recognized his sovereignty in Hainaut. The arms on fol. 93v are likely those of the still-unknown owner. The manuscript was probably finished in one campaign circa 1450 in Bruges, not in the several campaigns of work that scholars have usually proposed. Jan van Eyck was therefore not among the illuminators. -

Undergraduate students will define and state a basic knowledge of major and characteristic works of art and architecture in the Western Tradition, including the art of minorities and women. 2) Interpretative Skills. Undergraduate students will employ various interpretive methodologies to analyze works of art. 3) Research Skills. Undergraduate students will conduct art historical research involving logical and insightful analysis of secondary literature.
